Rumor: Details about Warren Spector's 'Epic Mickey' emerge

Today, CVG has posted some info from an anonymous source about the design of the game, which makes it sound kind of Okami-like, in that player interact with levels by painting directly onto them with the Wii Remote. "This 'painting your way' involves you drawing, etching and erasing whole or parts of levels as you go." Unsurprisingly, given the reliance on the pointer, CVG says the game is a Wii exclusive.
The story CVG describes had better be the real story. "We've also been told that it'll be based around very old and/or forgotten Disney characters who are out to get their revenge on Mickey," according to the site, "presumably because they're jealous of all his fame and fortune." Lending credence to this storyline is the fact that Oswald the Lucky Rabbit can be seen on the rocket in the above artwork.

This game just became a must-buy for me.
Discotheque @ Jul 30th 2009 6:06PM
OMG that sounds amazing. It's a shame it's wii exclusive though. I don't own the system. I was hoping it would be multiplatform!!!
bemaggg @ Jul 30th 2009 7:15PM
The system is inexpensive.... why not just purchase one?
Rob @ Jul 30th 2009 8:10PM
Plus there are other games you can buy, just look it up.

I just had to acknowledge the "Freaks" reference in the "one of us, one of us" comment :D
Michelobius @ Jul 30th 2009 6:08PM
If this comes out for only the Wii, I'll finally have to pick one up.
Araman @ Jul 30th 2009 6:09PM
This all sounds wonderful and all, but I can't help but think even if this gets the full green light, it's going to be neutered by Disney's "Family Friendly" Axe Squad.

Unless they pull a Pirates on us.
Discotheque @ Jul 30th 2009 6:14PM
Disney Interactive bought out Spector's Junction Point studios, knowing fully well this was their idea.
Araman @ Jul 30th 2009 6:20PM
Pirates didn't have a character known to audiences world wide as "kid safe", that being Mickey Mouse.
And Disco, business relationships can, have, and will continue to go awry. I don't know if you all remember, but Disney worked VERY closely with Square Enix to make sure KH stayed close to the heart of Disney IP.
nullset @ Jul 30th 2009 6:50PM
Nah, I don't think Disney would have a problem with this project, and I am convinced that this probably comes from the bigwigs as an idea for a new project. Isn't Disney trying to appeal to the tweeny kiddos nowadays, anyway? This seems perfect for that approach...
Rob @ Jul 30th 2009 8:14PM
@Araman
Interestingly enough, in the early talks on KH Square Enix wanted the game to star Mickey Mouse exclusively, Disney wanted Donald Duck, and Nomura didn't want either. What we got was the compromise between all sides, at least that's what I heard.
Jason B. @ Jul 30th 2009 6:11PM
Why couldn't they port this to the other consoles when the time comes?
bemaggg @ Jul 30th 2009 7:15PM
Because it's wii exclusive? Having such a unique control scheme means little to no chance of porting.
KeenCommander @ Jul 31st 2009 1:07PM
I think the point of "when the time comes" was referring to Natal and PS3's second attempt at motion controls - which would make the control scheme doable for other consoles.
Moptimus Slime (Leader of Princess Griffins Royal Guard) @ Jul 30th 2009 6:13PM
hey, Disney thought Oswald was worth enough to give up Al Michaels for him.
Dr. Ew @ Jul 30th 2009 6:54PM
Oswald the Lucky Rabbit! Who knew?
Thanks, Joystiq, for the fascinating Wiki reading.
(What if they hadn't given up Oswald and to spite Disney renamed the game series Oswald The Lucky Rabbit? (What will happen when John kicks off (for the last time)? Will the games still be called Madden? (Why is it I don't really consider sports-gamers to really be gamers?))
Sly @ Jul 30th 2009 6:13PM
sounds awesome!
ArchiGamer [Wiizer Sweatshop Human Resources] @ Jul 30th 2009 6:15PM
Look at the concept art, its morbidly awesome!!!

I heard about this. So, the PS3 version of Rage only gets 20-30fps to the 360 and PC's 60?
Dave @ Jul 30th 2009 8:47PM
Apparently.
The Adventures of Cesaria Across the 8th Dimension! @ Jul 30th 2009 6:47PM
This actually sounds....awesome!

A composite creature with Jafar's face in the stomach, Tigger's face in the elbow, Goofy's head on one tentacle, and the alligator from Peter Pan's head on the other
KylHu @ Jul 30th 2009 8:01PM
Oh, God! That is terrifying. How the heck are they gonna sell this game to kids? It will -ruin them-.
...Awesome!
Rob @ Jul 30th 2009 8:21PM
It's like the Mother series, only with Disney!...
(Thinks about lack of Mother 3 in U.S.)
Oh my, now I made myself sad. ;_;
Pimliconite @ Jul 31st 2009 8:28AM
Goofy: Hyuh hyuck! Hey kids! Join the symbiote! It's not so bad when you become one! Assimilate with us!
Tigger: First we need to get rid of you skin though! hahahHaHEE!
Peter Pan: Yes. Yes. It is a new existence. One we should all cherish and go to--RRUUUNNN!!! RUUUNNNN!!!! THEY NEED YOUR FACES TO LIIIVVE!!!!
Drew @ Jul 30th 2009 8:40PM
well this should come to the ps3. its getting a motion controller too.
eldee @ Jul 30th 2009 8:58PM
this looks fucking awesome.. although i hope "epic mickey" is just a working title, it's kind of dumb sounding :P
bongoes @ Jul 30th 2009 10:34PM
Nothing against Kingdom Hearts but... this is the right way to use Disney characters in an awesomely epic game.
Josh @ Jul 30th 2009 10:35PM
I will never believe the existence of this game, even if I'm playing it.
tkAshur @ Jul 31st 2009 4:25PM
Sir, you seriously made me ROFL. That was good, yet so agreeable.
Ozborne @ Jul 30th 2009 10:44PM
I have to break ranks here. This looks terrible. Did American McGee commission Todd McFarlane to "blow people's minds with some Disney shit", and did Todd then get lazy and rip off HR Geiger, and then did an angry sixteen year old post some fan fiction images of that monstrosity on his Deviant Art page?
Mayne @ Jul 31st 2009 12:32AM
Dammit. Just when I thought I wouldn't need my Wii anymore...
It got fried in a thunderstorm, and I was just coming to grips with not replacing it with the insurance money.
Oh well. I guess I can hold off until this game comes out. Wiis oughta be cheaper by then anyway...
MIKE SHIZZANE @ Jul 31st 2009 2:00AM
This is bullshit. An epic Disney game could be cool but to get "revenge" on Mickey? That's ridiculous. Mickey was just a better character than "clarabelle cow?" and Horace the horse? That just sounds stupid. And didn't Wayne allwine die like 3 months ago? Okami Was a ps2 game and now it's on the wii. Fuck this game. R.I.P Wayne allwine stick with kingdom hearts please Disney. Don't do this to one of your most beloved characters. And if anyone had a half a brain they wouldn't support this crap.
eldee @ Jul 31st 2009 1:35PM
you really need to get laid.
Daniel Carvalho @ Jul 31st 2009 3:04PM
This titles feels uncannily inspired by the beautifully artistic and atmospheric Machinarium (http://www.machinarium.com/) by Amanita Design. Mostly from an artistic point of view, I realize the gameplay differs somewhat.
Marty @ Aug 3rd 2009 11:44AM
This whole thing reminds me of really, really bad fan fiction.
UberWafffle @ Oct 12th 2009 6:51PM
Some of this is good, but most of it seems to be a big NO. Especially the freakish cyborgs made of mashed-up Disney characters. They were definitely on drugs when they designed some of this.
