Cave Story developer Nicalis reveals 'Project Q'

The latest project from Cave Story WiiWare developer Nicalis -- after, of course, Cave Story, Night Game and La-Mulana -- is a new platformer from Knytt and Night Game creator Nicklas "Nifflas" Nygren, currently called Project Q. You can see some early footage of the title at IGN.

Q appears to have a lot in common with the Knytt games -- the tiny protagonist exploring beautiful landscapes, dealing with environmental puzzles. It follows a young woman traversing various planets in search of pieces of a transporter, "armed" only with a camera, "to document information and capture the environments."

According to Nicalis's Tyrone Rodriguez, the developer has "WiiWare in mind." However, "In truth," he told IGN, "it could be WiiWare, Wii disc or even PSN, XBLA and PC."

Wow, talk about coincidence. My friend told me about Cave Story just yesterday. I've yet to play it, but he said it was very good.

Get to it. Even Gena has played the game already.

Be sure to get the true ending of the game!

Yes. Play it. If you have a gamepad for you pc, or a 360 controller. So much better with a controller.

I've beaten it way back, but I'm totally buying it on the Wii. Native widescreen support, new art, and to support the devs!

how about finish and release the games you are already making before you start new ones.

That's a stupid thing to say. Square Enix has a crap ton of games in development, as does Nintendo and Sony... I know they have multiple studios for games, but you're not limited to making ONE game at a time... and besides it's just pre-production.

At least now we know what's keeping them.

Where are they getting the funds for all these original titles anyway? I hope these guys don't run out before all this stuff is finished.

I absolutely adored Knytt and Within a Deep Forest. This will be a must for me seeing as how it looks even more amazing!

It's great and all that Nicalis is working on a bunch of interesting games, but I really would like for them to release one of them.

Knytt and Knytt Stories are awesome, so I'm happy to hear about this.

I thought Nifflas' made Knytt/Within A Deep Forest/Night Game? I didn't think he made Cave Story? Who is Nicalis?!

People who are buying up indy devs. Pixel made cave story and nick person made knytt.

I think Nicalis has an agreement with Pixel (the Japanese creator of Cave Story) to release the game on WiiWare with slightly upgraded graphics. I don't know what the money split will be, but I'm hoping that Pixel will finally get the credit he deserves for making one of the finest 2D games of the past decade. To give credit where credit is due, Nicalis is upgrading the graphics and doing the programming (I'd assume) to make Cave Story run on WiiWare, so it's somewhat accurate to call him the Cave Story "developer" even if most of the work was done by Pixel.

I'd be shocked if Pixel didn't retain all rights short of American distribution rights. I doubt the property has been "bought" at this stage.

Nicalis isn't a person, it's a company. Nifflas is the indie developer responsible for Knytt and Within a Deep Forest. Nifflas is working with Nicalis to create Night Game and now this game, but Nifflas doesn't have anything to do with Cave Story.

My head just exploded. Someone needs to clean this mess up.

Indeed, as in "this is Knytt with a slight graphics tweak", heh. That's fine and all, Knytt was a fun little game to play around with in its own right, and I can see the graphics being changed for market appeal. Hopefully there's a little more depth going into it if they want to charge for the experience, however.

I should play this sometime. I still have the full game emulated on my cpu

Saying that the "Cave story developer" has revealed a new project is incredibly misleading. They're just the developers porting Cave Story to the Wii.
