According to some recently released statistics from Sony, the worldwide install base for the PlayStation 3 is now 23.8 million strong. From a fact we learned earlier in June, we can extrapolate from these recent numbers that almost eight million people are currently being Quincied in PlayStation Home. Furthermore, assuming everyone owns one controller, there's more than 144 million axes of motion control floating around out there. (Axis'? Axises?)
From these numbers, we can also determine that the PS3 is currently lagging behind its Console War adversaries -- the Wii is sporting nearly the same number of users in the U.S. alone, and the Xbox 360 hit 28 million users earlier this year. Hey, that just makes it more underground, you know? It's edgy and exclusive, like that hip bar that doesn't let you or your friends in, because it's too full of well-dressed, attractive people.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't Sony always releasing false sales numbers for their consoles? They always try to tell the public that the number of units they've shipped worldwide is the number of installed base units worldwide.

I believe it was MS that was counting replaced consoles as units sold. Some people have gone through 3+ units from RROD. Very deceptive of MS. It is what we have all come to expect from a company that cares more about market share than consumer experience.

Sony started quoting units sold as units actually reaching consumers (rather than just retailers) with the launch of the PS3.
The other console manufactures still consider units to retailer as units sold.
So eNrique was correct - pity he's unable to elegantly state his point.

Are there sources to back up any of these claims? While I'm sure its the case, I just like facts more than what commenters tell me.

Easily is debatable. Keep in mind 360 is going into the holiday strong and Sony is still relying on first party IP, which hasn't done well for them since Crash bandicoot.
IF they can drop the price, they may have a chance to win holiday against the 360, in the US. Worldwide it's already been won. But NOTHING is easily done even with a price drop.

FF13 comes out in Japan the Christmas....the DEMO Moved PS3 units alone.....what do you think the GAME will do?? And I've said it B4 the 360 is soon to hit its saturation point. As it doesnt appeal to Soccer moms & 50+ year olds like the Wii OR to Audiophiles like the PS3 which is arguably the BEST Blu-ray player on the market for under $400...making it $299 will make even MORE people who were trying to Decide between the Standalone Sammy BD player for $350 and the PS3 which ALSO plays games for $50 less.....

I wonder what the *REAL* amount of 360s that have exchanged hands have been. My buddy is on his 5th and is no longer sending them back because it's 5-6 weeks to get it from repair, so he just buys a new one.
Oh snap, did I just go there?
But seriously. I've hated Microsoft since before the Xbox came out, yet after the demo video of the chick doing martial arts moves with the mech. That was kinda neat at the time.
Will be interested to see what happens to the PS3 price point come fall. Sony vehemently defends the current price point (wouldn't they all, though? It still needs an official announcement before a marketing blitz), but it was also recently learned that manufacturing cost has dropped 70% from when PS3s were first manufactured. They're now making profit on each unit sold, and could still make profit on each unit sold if they dropped it $100 instead of just $50.

The lead is closer to 7 million, and most likely more. At the absolute minimum, the lead is 6 million, since it was reported that the 360 surpassed the 2600 (which is known to have sold 30 million).
According to VGC, the lead is over 8 million, but it has PS3 about a million behind what this story says, of course these numbers are probably shipment numbers

If you assume that zero xbox 360s have been sold since january 26, then yes Obie, your comment would be correct.

Actually, Mr. Kahn, you're running off three years too late info. When Howard Stringer took over, that was one of the first things he changed in the fiscal reports and these ARE fiscal reports. Microsoft counts shipped to a distrobution center and Nintendo still largely counts solld to retailers.
Stringer believed "shipped to stores" didn't tell an accurate number. So in the fiscal reports, like these are, tells the sell-through at retail. Not just sold to retail. These numbers are particularly important in the fact that they want to know how many systems they have to flush out of the channel before the slim comes along.... supposedly.

There are probably a lot of people out there looking forward to playing Rage at 15fps.

^ Ewww. Way to blow your fanboy load with that comment. Rage isn't even out yet and Carmack has stated he's planning to get all versions to run at 60fps with some consistency. Yeah, in the industry we tend to listen to the established experts like Carmack than the fanboys who take a piece of his comment out of context and try to pass it off as fact.

for correctness :)
from the article:
"the Xbox 360 hit 28 million users earlier this year"
if you click on joystiq's link it takes you to the article which states the 360 hit 28 million around January 6, 2009, about 8 months ago.
so if you want to think the 360 has a 4 million console gap lead by comparing January 6, 2009 figures to August 3, 2009 articles then so be it, but you are not even close.

and for the other wrong comments:
SONY ONLY GOES BY SHIPPED CONSOLES.
(once sony has shipped a console from their factories to market, the console has already been sold according to their accounting system.
if you peek or read their shareholder accounting reports (which are made public, and ready to view online) you would realize how wrong you are.

who really believes that sony will release a $ 299 slim ps3 this year or soon ??
the psp go is said to be releasing at $ 250, costs less than a psp to manufacture and you believe that a slim ps3 will be sold to us for $ 299 ???
is there any blu ray player that retails for $ 299 or less ?? why assume a slim will be cheaper if the psp go is going to be $ 250 ??
--------------------
and a ps3 price drop will be followed by a 360 price drop if needed, which last i saw the last ps3 price drop had no impact on closing the console gap lead after MS dropped the 360 price.
its ok to say the ps3 is a great console and whatever...
but to make up and believe lies is blah..
fanboy crashing rant done.

@ sk8monroe81
There are several Blu-ray players retailing below $300 and many at or close to $200
http://gizmodo.com/5093230/dealzmodo-15-cheap-blu+ray-players-as-low-as-200
And as you stated, prior to Microsoft dropping their price, after the first price drop on the PS3, the PS3 WAS steadily closing in on the 360 by about 70-100K world-wide per month. That pretty much turned the opposite once Microsoft did their drop.

good points.
but u think a slim would be $ 299?
when a go may be $ 250?
go = 16gb, no disc drive, single analog stick, great gaming machine, but no computer by any means in the box, cost less than a psp to manufacture ($ 100+), etc....
ps3 = 100+ gb now, blu ray drive, full computer in a box pretty much, controller, still cost more than $ 250 to manufacture, etc.....
