But the question is, does it still look butt-ugly on the Wii?

That's how wii online should have been in the first place, should it still have
*shudder* friend codes. Just use the one for the console and that's it.

"If you've got friends in your Wii address book, they'll automatically be added to your friends list in game, so you can easily connect up with them in online multiplayer games."

Wait so this IS possible?!?!? Why has this not been the case for EVERY GAME DAY ONE???

Activision is using their own network, maybe? The separate friend-code thing is definitely a requirement if you're using WiFi Connection, because High Voltage was trying to minimize it's impact as much as possible, and they still had it in The Conduit (you could send friend requests to people on your Wii list, but you couldn't do so automatically).

Assuming that The Conduit used the maximum allowances for Friend-Code workarounds, Activision is doing something on their own with this.

@Mr Khan: The same goes for EA and Medal of Honour: Heroes 2. EA Nation was the online network that the game used, and as far as I remember there were no friend codes of any kind in that game.

I suppose its probably a bit more work, and then your limited to 1 friend list per Wii unless they go to the trouble of supporting both the main one and game specific ones or working out some way of splitting up the main friend codes friend list.

GH games still lacking in actually being good?

Yep.

People, don't trick yourselves into another GH game (As I did with GHWT and GHM [I own every GH game up to GH:M, and I even have some of the DS ones.]), buy The Beatles: Rock band, or at least Rock band 2....

They're GOOD games still.

Unlike GH.

No, I beg to differ about GHM. Metallica was the best GH game to date.

Just...not on the Wii.

People judging games they haven't played yet?

Yep.

Honestly, I don't think The Beatles: Rock Band will be as big of a hit as people think it will be. Sure, you have all of the The Beatles fans out there, and you have the die-hard Rock Band fans too. But after that? Will your average 15-23 year old buy The Beatles: Rock Band? Probably not.

Then again, I said the same thing about Guitar Hero: Aerosmith, and that turned out to be wrong. However, it was riding the GH3 hypefest that exploded the holiday season before it.

I know 100 people are going to freak out once they have finished reading this post, as it's a sin to even think that The Beatles: Rock Band has a chance at not selling well. I'm going to go lock my house up, now. I bet 15 of those people just put hit on me.

RB The Beatles is going to be really boring to play unless you prefer to sing.
GH Aerosmith was terrible but at lease it had a few challenging songs.

I only played Gh3 on my wii, all other on my 360.

And GH:M was the biggest waste of money in a long time. It was GHWT, which by the way wasn't very good to begin with, and just with metallica songs, which, while fun, didn't make the game all that fun to play.

And YES I will judge a game I haven't played.

If the past 3, yes 3, versions of the game have been terrible, is it so far out there to guess that the nxt one will be bad.

@Kaemon: It's probably safe to say that YOU won't like it or think it's good, but like False I agree that GH:M was the best offering to date, and it makes me optimistic for Guitar Hero 5.

You know, it's fair to knock them when they are whoring out their franchise. However, to knock them when it's obvious they are actually trying to produce a fun game is stupid and petty. Let the anger go.

Wow, its amazing what a developer can do when they take the time to study a console's SDK instead of slapping something together before they go out to lunch on a Friday

EA has done w/o Friend Codes on all EA Sports titles from the get go. That's because EA uses their own servers for online, not the big N's.

Your screen name is your "friend code" in Madden, Tiger Woods, etc. And said code can be used for all other EA Sports online titles. Your EA account frm say, TW10. is found by say...Madeen 10 the 1st time you enter the online mode.

However EA Sports games could do the thing GH5 is trumpeting already (Wii console code) back since Madden 08.

Exactly. There's no limits to Wii online, so long as you're willing to abandon Nintendo WiFi Connection (and in essence, completely pay for your own game's online support), and i'm pretty sure that this isn't possible running on WFC

@ SecretAgentHam

Audio should sound just fine. GH3 for Wii was broken w/ accidental MONO track audio as opposed to the Dolby ProLogicII it was supposed to be. But class action lawsuits work wonders in America & Activision replaced the "defective" copies (incl. mine) for free.

When mixed correctly (GHWT on, RB1 & esp RB2), DPLII audio sounds just fine thru a HT receiver. The avg listener - ie. the masses - will not be able to distinguish btwn GH/RB audio from Wii (analog 2 ch w/ DPLII processing) or PS3/360 w/ HDMI out/5.1. And if TV speakers are what you use? Who cares!

@False - check the shots over @ IGN & decide for yourself if it's still butt-ugly. Totally revamped graphics engine for GH5 on Wii. 480p? Yes. Improvement over previous GH Wii games? Yes again. When you are staring at note tracks, though, does 1080p really matter much?

Now, bring on RB3 Wii with all the up to date bells & whistles, HMX. You guys make a better music game anyway.

I do think the Wii should get some sort of update. Due to Nintendo's bullshit, Activision had to do a disc replacement program, rather than a much better patch program. And now RB Wiiers out there won't get the Rock Band 2.5 update this fall.

Also, I remember when VV kept saying that they would patch GH3 DLC in to the Wii version eventually, 6 months went by, and nothing. VV finally says "Nintendo won't let us, sorry guys."

It's this bullshit that made me jump over to the 360 (and later a PS3). I don't know why Nintendo loves torturing it's own consumers like that.

"We could be seeing more on this as early as August, when it's planned to go into open beta. Initially, the Rock Band Network will only be available on the Xbox 360, though it's the goal to roll it out to the PS3 AND WII as soon as possible"

Even a music game like this looks much better when everything is so sharp. From the notes, to the crowd, to the characters.

Playing RB2 or GH:M on 360, and then moving to the Wii version of GH, is pretty jarring :l

The RBN update uses Microsoft's XNA development suite. The PSN and Wii versions will never be as expansive as the XNA version. They will be getting the best-of songs that have sold well on the 360 version.

It is NOT the same, as you don't have the authoring tools that will be on there (Such as, the ability to try out your songs before you put them on the network) as the 360 version has. This is because Microsoft is the only console maker to have a system that supports independently created custom content (The XNA development suite).

I am also talking of the improved score tracking patch as well, which will be with Rock Band's August update.

ANd is it just me, or do the note highways in the pic above look more like RB versions?

That's because the highways are black. There was also a black highway option in GH:Metallica. It seems that they are now permanently black, rather than the highway designs featured on all GH games prior.

Other than that, they look different considerably. The highway is not transparent. SP, Rock Meter, and Combo are on the sides, rather than below the fretboard. Round notes, etc.

So I know it must be blasphemy and all that, but I actually like the friend codes.

I'll admit I don't like online multiplayer very much - I prefer waiting to play in person - and am therefore biased. But when there's no opportunity to get together, I only want to play with my friends. It's not that big of a deal to call someone up, say "Hey, you wanna play?" and set that up.

Yes, I realize that some people want to play with people they don't know, but then you get problems with immature teenage boys cluttering everything up, as many a person has complained about XBox Live.

And a small part of me is pleased that none of that douchebaggery is caused by my younger cousins, because I convinced my aunt that letting them use Live would be a terrible, terrible idea.

You didn't support friend codes with your comment at all. You supported friend lists. Which are on 360 and PS3 too, just without the 12 or 16 digit codes. Names > codes, there is NO way to argue against that.
