The subscription plans for Cryptic's super-powered MMO Champions Online were revealed via a pre-order offer the developer just announced. Potential players who anticipate their prolonged enjoyment of the title can shell out $199.99 for a lifetime subscription to the game, while those desiring a less permanent commitment can sign up for a $59.99 six-month plan. Cryptic explained the latter would normally cost players $89.99 if paid for on a monthly basis -- seeing as how $90 divided by six equals $15, it's safe to assume that'll be the monthly fee for access to the game.
Pre-ordering one of these two subscription plans nets players a whole slew of bonuses, the most desirable of which is access to the closed beta for Star Trek Online, which will take place "later this year." Both plans also garner players an in-game "art deco" costume set -- but lifetime subscribers also get the "retro future" costume set, an in-game Foxbat action figure, eight additional character slots and even an additional costume for STO which will appear in players' inventory at launch. In the business, that's what we like to call "The Works."

not... really. assuming it's $15/month, that works out to a lifetime memebership for the cost of a little over 13 months of play. I know WoW players who have been paying that monthly fee for several years now, IN ADDITION to paying full price for the game and it's expansion when they shipped. So really $200 for the game + lifetime access + exclusive bonus items really isn't that bad.

200 bones for ANY game is expensive. It's a bargain if you know you'll be playing it longterm, sure, but who can predict that?
I'm a big MMO fan and I can tell you, no game is worth throwing down that kind of money without atleast trying the game for a few months. My favorite MMO experience has been with Guild Wars and that has cost me less than a hundred over several years to collect all the games/expansions.

"A retail box or digital purchase is still required to play Champions Online after our launch on September 1st, 2009."
You're not getting the game in the $200 Lifetime Sub package.

Does lifetime mean my lifetime, or whenever they decide to pull the servers?

Aren't these the same guys that made City of Heroes/Villains? I don't see why people are so doubting of their ability to make a compelling MMO.

Oh, I thought people liked those games. I'm not really an MMO guy, but I figured with 2 seemingly successful MMO's under their belts, they must know what they are doing for the most part.

It's hardly the same guys. They only share one person in common and that's Jack Emmert
Emmert was the previous lead designer for CoH and was responsible for very unpopular changes. A majority of the community are happy that he relinquished control over CoH to a much better hand with a much bigger wallet. To put into perspetive. When Marvel Online was announced, Emmert simply abandon support for CoH and stripped the team down to 15 people. So going by their track record, I highly doubt their ability to maintain 2 MMOs at once

I think CoH held my attention for maybe 9 months, so I'll probably pass on the $200 lifetime. Oddly enough, I might consider it if it were $150.
Honestly, my friends and I are all just biding our time until SWTOR. Any other game is just something to fill the time until then.

that is way too much commitment for me.. but I guess that's y I've never bought an MMO. I have this habit of convincing myself there is more to life than games.. Besides, with all the other sweet games comin out within the next year, why would you wanna play the same game for so long?

Why do they force us to pay so much for MMOs? I find it ridiculous specially considering I usually gotta pay the 50 dollars to buy the game also. Lets take WoW. If they have 7 million subscribers, and its 15 a month, does it really take 105 million dollars a month to run the game? These games should be 5 dollars a month at most IMO. But, nothings ever going to change and I'm never going to play another MMO (besides The Old Republic and thats because I love KOTOR and Bioware to no end) because of it.

Well, if costumers put up with it, then...you know? Blizzard could give away the game itself, but why would they if people are willing to pay for it? Millions of times?

rewarding the purchase of an MMO with the beta of an MMO.. doesn't that seem a little counter intuitive to anybody?

That seems reasonable , I guess. But If the game itself costs 60 $ then...I'll wait and gt it preplayed

Indeed a ploy to get a quick infusion of cash. Then they can pour all of it into STO and make that a good game while people play the bad game they have a lifetime subscription to and watch it crumble.
