Loved the 3-on-3 NHL Arcade game, not sure how football transitions to this format though. To me, an NBA version would be a no-brainer, but could intrude on NBA Jam territory.

Since there hasn't been an NBA Jam game release in years, I'd say intruding on it wouldn't be bad. I loved me some NBA Jam in my college days, when others were into Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat.

Can't see how any Madden equivalent will play like anything but NFL Street.
BTW Tommyboy, I think NBA Jam has abdicated its crown long ago with the likes of NBAs Showtime, Hoopz, Street and Ballers taking over. I loved playing as the Magic in the SNES version of that.

Maybe digital distribution only? The next step after Battlefield?

NHL 3 on 3 is fun but has some issues.
You can only play 1 vs 1 online. In NHL 09 every player on the ice can be controlled by a player so there's no excuse for this limitation.
There's no way to save your team. Every game you have to pick each player you want over again.
There are other issues, but those are the main two that should be patched.
