Sounds like their focus on character growth through weapons means you'll gain "Ability Points" for using them, just like in FFIX. And the "no experience" system based on character abilities sounds a lot like Guild Wars, in which they expect you to be at the level cap halfway through the game, and the rest of the game depends on how well you can use your skills.

I am 100% for this direction and may actually play this MMO, even though I've avoided all pay-to-play MMO's up until now, because I absolutely loved Guild Wars and how you had to carefully plan out which abilities to use in certain situations.

Hmmm... not sure how it'll work. But so long as there is a sense of satisfaction, I'm game.

I don't care what they do with it as long as they bring Shantotto back in some way or form.

Holy crap I want to break the fingers of the guy filming. He has what I like to call 'overactive spastic zoom syndrome'.

Aside from that I'll be interested to see how this plays out. Personally, I enjoy levelling up, but there's a fine line between that and grinding for XP.

So they're gonna start calling stuff different names now eh? How about changing 'Chocobo' to 'Dire Chicken' or 'Big Bird' or 'Chicken of Doom'.

no leveling is not a big deal, FFX did not have leveling, just ability/stat progression through the sphere grid. i suspect FFXIV will be a little like this, with the added focus on weapons of course.

well you could always play a pseudo-MMO offline about an MMO based on a TV show of a guy trapped in an MMO

Yeah, I'm getting a super strong Monster Hunter vibe coming from FFXIV.

MH inspired gameplay combined with a gorgeous world, epic stories, Uematsu's music and the amazing art director from FFXII and you have pure FF MMO gold.

Plus the game is more casual player friendly... I can't wait to play this!

If the secret message is what I think it is, it's really dumb. It says that destined heroes will clash shadows again.

Neofolklore

"an interview with the game's director, Nobuaki Komoto, revealed that the game will place a focus on the weapons players use, explaining that your armaments will determine "the way you play" and "the way you grow." Sounds reminiscent of Final Fantasy IX. (That's a very good thing.)"

my only concern is that this all sounds way to hypothetical, meaning that this game will never ever be released next year, I am sure it will take a "bit" longer....-_-

Final Fantasy XI was the best MMO I have ever played. I am really glad the developers are taking some things from XI and building upon it. I just really hope soloing doesn't ruin group play.

Awesome. If it borrows absolutely anything from FFIX, its guaranteed to be great.

Also, @ Neptune, FFX and XII still used leveling alongside their Sphere Grid and License Board, respectively. So, I doubt it'll be like that.

Maybe it'll be as others say, like FFIX's AP system, where your strength lies in your knowledge of attacks, magic and abilities. In FFIX, sure leveling up helped, but you could be level 10 and if you had good abilities, kick as much ass as a level 25 character.

I just hope it doesn't cost too much per month. The main thing that deterred me from XI was shelling out $30/month. Sure, I had the cash, but in two months time, that was one new game and a couple lunches.

Yeah both X and XII had leveling up system, but I think neither actually needed one (except for stat increase).

But yes, it is more likely they will just use somekinda equipment-developes-skills system.

I really need to try one of the Final Fantasy games one day. If this MMO is coming to PC (which is probably very unlikely since its a PS3 exclusive) I will definately get it.

Ultima Online already did this, and it worked amazingly well.

Granted, you still had to raise skills up, but it wasn't really leveling per-say.

There is so much in this video that makes me happy as a fan of FFXI. Plus Uematsu is doing the full soundtrack, and that man can make some absolutely incredible music.

Please just bring on the beta, Square, I'm beggin' ya!

Looks like I will be playing this... Somehow.

If it fails to go to the 360, I'll just upgrade my PC.

But more importantly, I'm very pleased to hear they've changed things to not focus on leveling, I.E. no more 'disappearing from society' devotion to the game required.

I remember when warhammer online was stated for release saying that there be no lvling because you could tell how you chr is by how he/she ages. I like the idea and looks great but i think they might bit off more than they could chew. But if does happend it will change the idea behind a lot of mmo's. But then again i am want to play this on my ps3 or pc

Yeah video has been pulled from YouTube.

Doesn't matter, if SE continues to keep all of their servers in Japan then FFXIV will never catch on in NA. 1500ms pings are lame.
