Awesome short-sightedness yet again, Microsoft. If you let the DLC go for free, as Valve probably wanted it, you'd sell more copies of BOTH games. Didn't you learn that lesson last time you let Valve do free DLC and you sold more copies of L4D than you did at its launch.

The GOTY edition brought the price back up to $60, even though the "extras" it had were a free download anyway. The regular version with an MSRP of $40 is pretty much unavailable in big retail.

"Ugh... Why an odd number of microsoft points?

I think it's little more than a scam.

They advertise a product at 560 MS points but the minimum points you HAVE to actually purchase is 1000 MS Points.

Which means that here in Australia, if you have a 0 MS point balance -- as I do -- then this purchase of 1 map will set you back A$16.50.

No thanks, Microsoft.

I'm not sure it's actually legal to do this in Australia. I'll be contacting the ACCC and getting their advice on the matter. As far as I'm concerned, this is blatantly deceptive business practice.

Further to the pricing, here in Australia the ACCC stipulates that in regard to pricing, the "total advertised price" should include:

"The total price is the minimum amount you have to pay the business for the good or service. "

Clearly, "560 MSP" is not the "minimum amount you have to pay the business" in this case. Someone with 0 MSP balance needs to actually pay 1000 MSP.

Then there's the legality of using a faux currency in the first place. The ACCC has this to say about the pricing of a product:

"Businesses should disclose all components of the price when displaying, quoting or advertising prices. The price you see should not be subject to additional or ongoing costs unless these are clearly specified. If a product or service is subject to GST, then the prices displayed or quotes obtained must include GST."

Clearly, this is not happening with MS Points.

Microsoft should make the real cost of purchase clear, and they should accept other payment methods than the block purchasing of a fake currency.

I guess it's nice that a lengthy campaign with decent co-op replayability is only $7, but I hardly think one campaign in a year is a landmark in game support after launch. Also, conspiratorial crybabies? Grow the fuck up.

Sure, it's Valve's fault that Microsoft owns the Xbox Live Marketplace and dictates what publishers charge for content on the XBLM. You know, like they did when they told Bizarre Creations they had to pick a price point for Geometry Wars when they asked to give it away free - so they picked the lowest they could - 400pts. Or like when Cliffy B and Mark Rein have commented that they would have rather released the Gears maps free from day 1 but Microsoft told them to charge for them up front and do free updates later.

You want to blame somebody - blame Microsoft.

Valve created and owns Steam, yet they release stuff on there for free all the time. If it was Valve's fault, why release things on Steam for free? Why are the TF2 class updates free on Steam? Why do companies get to charge whatever they want for their games on Steam (ie Valve does not force pricing on them)?

Yet this is all Valve's fault...got it.

I guarantee you if Valve released the TF2 updates for the Ps3 version, they'd be free. But they're so disgusted with the poor optimization of the game, they don't want to have anything to do with it (so Ps3 owners are REALLY left out in the cold).

I bought Orange Box for the PC and I bought L4D for the PC, first and foremost because KB+M beats controller anyday in an FPS. Secondly, there's mods and user-created content. Thirdly, online play is free. Console exclusive shooters (like Gears, Killzone, or Resistance) I'll buy on the console....but any other FPS that comes out console+PC, I buy on PC.

Microsoft were the publishers in both cases you cite. That means they get to dictate the prices, not the developers. In this case, Valve are the publishers. Valve can offer free DLC if they so choose, other publishers have certainly done so, including Electronic Arts. While MS can certainly apply pressure to Valve to set a certain price for the DLC, Valve ultimately has to accept the responsibility for this as it's their choice.

Why is it all for free on PC? Because Valve prefers to work with the PC and has always considered consoles to be a gaming ghetto. They didn't even do any of the work on the PS3 Orange Box. Steam is also their service, their big money maker. They have an interest in convincing people it's worth installing and having. They have no such interest in XBox Live.

Sony are no strangers to recouping/profiting from their third-party developers in the matter of PSN downloads.

Come on Microsoft this is getting ridiciulous. Most publishers, and developers don't even use the one free update they are allowed anyways. Clearly you can change your policy, to be more lenient towards the few that do want to release free updates, and it won't hit your pocketbooks. Your marketplace sales will continue to grow, regardless.

Valve put the resources into producing their content, if they don't want to be paid for that work, then who are you to stop them? Just change the policy. Throw out the ratio policy, the one free update per two premium. Give developers a maximum of three free updates, each with a 800 MB limit. Everything beyond that has to be premium. There you go. Im happy, the few independant developers that will exploit the policy change will be happy. And gamers will be happy.

Games that release free DLC, will have increased sales to one degree or another. Which will net you more money through your share of retail sales. The odd multiplayer game, with free DLC, will increase interest in gold membership to one degree or another. Those people would then be more likely to play other games on XBL. And finally, might get interested enough in other games on the service to pay for premium DLC for them. Beyond all that, theres the obvious positive reputation that would be associated with that.

Having the odd game, with free DLC isn't going to hurt you. Quite frankly having the odd game with free DLC, could help you. Its not like every developer is going to stand up and start releasing free content. I mean, the amount of developers producing DLC, is so high this generation, because they CAN charge. In the PC market, where there is only free DLC, very few developers invest the resources towards producing DLC. Even fewer of those developers have the determination, to resist charging if the infrastructure existed to charge consumers.

Inorder to produce free DLC, developers have to swallow both the certification fee, and the cost of producing the content. Not many are willing to do that. So there is NO harm, in changing your policy, to give just a little more leeway to the few that are.

We'll just have to see if people have learned their lesson about purchasing Valve games on consoles. (the lesson is "Don't do it!" btw)

I have this sinking feeling that many of those complaining about this $7 will either still pay it or, even worse, still purchase Left 4 Dead 2 on the 360.

I've noticed that gamers like to complain a lot of being nickle and dime'd on DLC only to turn around and squeeze out $5 on avatar apparel or a premium theme.

I wouldn't mind the price of the DLC so much if it were just 500 ms points, but why 560? You can only buy ms points in bundles of 500, 1000, and so on. So I would have to buy 1000 points just for an extra 60 points!

Seriously?
I like how everyone on here knows what Valve did or didn't plan to do. L4D came out last November, the first content pack came out 4 months later in March, and that didn't have any new campaigns - it just had the extra versus maps, and the new game type which used portions of existing maps. Now they're releasing a full campaign, playable on all three game types, six months later - a campaign that includes newly recorded audio to boot.
Is it really that hard to accept that maybe, MAYBE, they had most of the first DLC already underway when the game came out in November, and that this new campaign would take longer to create from the ground up? That the company that gave you 2008's game of the year and the free dlc in March (when every naysayer KNEW that 360 gamers would have to pay for it,) was planning on making good on their word and was working all along to put out more content, regardless of how many people complained on the internet? Regardless of the fact that pre-sales for the sequel have already eclipsed the original's?
Come on, folks. The gaming world is full of companies willing to half-ass it to get your dollar - go give them some of your web-rage, and stop hating on a company that's willing to give you the goods.

I seem to recall reading a while back that valve wants to give its dlc out for free on all platforms, but microsoft said they don't want games to add new achievements with free dlc content.

So not only do you poor 360 owners have yourselves to blame, but your collective hard-on for arbitrary game goals with no reward is actually the root cause of you getting perpetually screwed on your platform of choice.

congrats kiddos ;)
