Putting that aside, I am extremely excited about this new campaign and playing the hell out of it like the other 4 campaigns.

Apparently, or so I have heard, developers are required to pay to put DLC onto XBOX Marketplace or Playstation Network, as it requires hosting space or something.

I've heard this a couple of times, but if this was true then why was so much of the Burnout Paradise DLC free? The Burnout DLC wasn't insignificant stuff like a car, it was new areas and play modes.

I think it's because those were mandatory game updates rather than DLC that's placed on the Marketplace

They don't. The publisher does. Valve is publishing this game and thus this is the price they want. Makes sense when you think about it. They can get some free money for the DLC, and the complaints for the price will be aimed at microsoft. At the same time they get to pimp steam and pacify the people bitching about L4D2.

Valve apparently had to do a lot of pushing to get one free game type.

@Ballistic H
Same. Microsoft loses this round. I recieved L4D 360 as a gift, but I knew the inevitable dlc + $25 Halloween sale would be justified sooner or later.

Updates on PS3 Burnout was going to be free.

MS couldn't have charged for it even if they want to. It's in their policy.
(you can't charge more on the xbox than a completing platform. And apparently Steam is not a completing platform.)

I trust that valve is not lying they're pretty straight forward and transparent with most of their operations. TF2 has brought back the standard that updates and dlc should be free and when people think of the game that's usually one of the flags that gets waved. I can see how microsoft would want them to charge, can't have all the casual online gamers yelling "..But TF2 get's free dlc why not us?". It allows them to keep up the industry wide bullshit of saying how much work went into this new content and we need your moneys for it ect ect.

Burnout on the other hand, some of their content WAS payed dlc correct?

funny that people who fought against LFD2 are now "crybabies"? classy joystiq.

Anyway, who knows if this DLC would have even seen the light of day had not people made a stink about it. Valve could have very easily just released this for the LFD2 as DLC and then thought twice about that.

oh well. still good news. still not going to buy LFD2.

If game developers took fans' complaints to heart that readily, they'd never get anything done

Seriously, come up with any idea for a change to a popular game, and you can find 10 fanboys rabidly for and against it in no time flat

Maybe. The way the campaigns are split up, it's sort of like 4 maps in one. Don't most 4 maps go for about $10? And in some aspects, one campaign is almost like 1/5 of the game. I'm probably stretching it a bit. They might not want to risk having to foot the bill with the possibility of 1,000,000+ people downloading it. I don't know what kind of cut Microsoft usually takes on these DLC's or how they calculate the figures, but it's probably a nice chunk, one that Valve doesn't feel the need to pay for.

I also wouldn't be surprised to see a sale on the PC before the DLC drops, too. With the promotion that goes into the DLC, and the media coverage, they could get quite a few new sales out of it. especially before L4D2 hits the shelves.

@Papa that was the joke. The humor is derived from the obvious fact that a free download will be more appealing. This is a nod to Pachters obvious predictions. Joke now neutered.

I would actually have been prepared to pay for a new map for L4D PC. The thing is that the game is so open-source that having people pay for it would probably get scrutinized immediately.

On Xbox, Microsoft has a vice-grip on you, the consumer. If you want the Valve love, get a mid-grade PC!

Just on this one?

What about all the other games ? There are a bunch of extra maps for other games that we have to pay for and PC gamers get it for free.

It's not just on this one.
