Ben Smith, director of program management for Xbox Live, has befuddled us by stating that the Xbox's "Netflix lite" approach is to give a more "video rental store" experience to customers. Speaking with MTV's Multiplayer, the executive also said, "I think when people come to Xbox they're not really looking so much for functional, they really want to have fun, they want to be wowed."
Please, stop. And consider us "wowed" by that quote! Netflix has built an empire by avoiding almost every horrible aspect of the "video rental store" experience. As visually pleasing as a wall of pretty boxes is at the local rental mega-chain, Netflix's ever-growing dominance in the space gives credence to the notion that people don't mind (maybe, even enjoy) the ability to search through thousands of movies quickly and efficiently. If Microsoft wants us to have "fun" and "be wowed," it'd be by giving us the ability to search for a movie on our Xbox 360 and (if available for streaming) play it directly from there. The Xbox 360 has built its marketing and brand around the "core" gamer audience, the folks who likely aren't scared or confused by something as basic as a "search" function.

I find your lack of search disturbing...

Apple seems to outsmart all these boneheads because you can just view all your content in alphabetical list order in their free software instead of all this fancy pants hip, post-modern, reflective "space" that you got on both Sony and MS's consoles. Did MS learn nothing from that WebTV fiasco?

Thanks for telling us what we want.

I think the point is to make the xbox browser slightly inferior to the Netflix one so people won't bypass it totally. Messing with the website and adding something to the instant queue is easy, and it takes less than 30 seconds for the change to be reflected on the xbox app.

What I saw when I read this was: "we don't want to do any work and will settle for the simplest update that will satisfy the simplest simpletons because that is cheap and easy to do..." and then some more "bla bla bla bla" after that.
C'mon Microsoft, if you really think that SOME people want a simple experience then by all means GIVE it to them, but make it a CHOICE. Make the "simple" view a default mode and give people the choice to switch to an advanced mode with more functions and abilities. Prove that you can do it right BOTH ways and satisfy the MOST number of people all at once. That's probably more than they can handle.

So is this next NXE going to be faster, I find it so slow checking things out (XBLA Games). Thirty second to two minutes and I'm still sitting there waiting for the price of something to come up.

couldn't agree more.
having been selected to the preview for over a week now, i can say that while it's an improvement the 'browsing' itself remains limited and unorganized.
either do it right or don't bother. half-ass'ing it is unacceptable.

This is pretty Apple-ish of them.

Please tell me you made that quote up. It is so ridiculous and even more riduclous cause he actually said it.

I got in the update preview and my friend saw me browsing through titles and got immediately hooked in. He probably would have sat down immediately to watch a movie if he had the time. It's a nice visual presentation, although I don't think you can just type a search in like on the Netflix website.

It would be really nice if your going to do one of these "outrage" post you should at least show that the company is open to change as stated in the article...
But he didn't rule out the possibility for browsing updates in the future:
"If we find out that people really think it's hard and they really want to find all movies that begin with "B" or something like that, we'll definitely go down that path. With Marketplace we did that…there was kind of a compromise."

I dig the wall of movies look, but what is stopping them from adding additional features? Color me confused.

I have to say I don't agree with the article. I think the upgrade is very useful and allows me to get to movies that aren't on my list (new arrivals).
It is not a fully functional interface on your xbox and I (for once) agree with MS that I don't really need it to be.
I'll add that in addition to new functionality, the movies stream at a much higher rate for me. I only have 1.5mbps AT&T DSL service. Normally the movie would start out pretty fuzzy and, not long into the movie, downstep to an even fuzzier, almost unwatchable, bitrate.
Now the movies are relatively clear and don't seem to need to downstep half way through.
All in all, I am very happy with the update.

What a completely bizarre conclusion to reach. Functionality? Who wants that?!
