OMG Lilac PSP! Sony says 'Girlz Play Too'

Sony continues to follow the time-tested formula for reaching out to females: belittle their intelligence, turn them into stereotypes, and color a product pink -- or in this case, lilac. In addition to launching the Limited Edition Hannah Montana PSP Entertainment Pack today, SCEA is introducing its "Girlz Play Too" initiative which shows how Sony is "committed to bringing a steady stream of female-friendly content to consumers."

"The gaming world has traditionally been a male domain, but today we're seeing more and more female gamers, particularly on portable devices," says John Koller, SCEA's Director of Hardware Marketing. "While SCEA has a broad range of PSP owners from under 12 to over 45 years old, we saw a tremendous opportunity for us to connect with the female and 'tween' demographic and create a PSP system that girls will love." Changing the color from black to an off-purple tone was exactly what girls were waiting for.

The "Girlz Play Too" website lets girlz (not girls, mind you) explore the features of the PSP system, customize a virtual PSP and take a quiz to find out which game character they are. This blogger? "You are So LocoRoco!" TOTALLY!

They're appealing to the moron teenage girls who do fit the stereotype. All you cool girl gamers already buy games, so they don't need to market to you.

Oh, so, even though I've been a 'gamer girlz' since I was nine, a lilac PSP was JUST what I was waiting for to really come out and say it loud n' proud! I think I'll, like, go down to my local EB and like, TOTALLY buy that Jonas Brothers game n' stuff!
This sort of crap makes me sick. Go drown yourself, Sony.

My issue is that targeted advertising like this actually works. People are stupid in general, so I've stopped caring about stereotyping.

It would be nice to say 'no girls are like that, how demeaning!' and refute the stereotype, but in this case, it exists because most tweener girls ARE like that. And since when is 'OMG' belittling the intelligence of young females? It may not be high prose, but most of us using this blog have, at some point, used it, too - male or female - and all ages.

These girls look a bit older than the usual Hannah Montana demographic, but then again girls of the Hannah Montana target range mostly WANT to see themselves as older. So again, yes, quite valid.

Frankly, it's a smart marketing move. One of very, very few Sony has made with the PSP in the USA. Throw some Twilight or goth-girl appeal in there next time and get the more anime/vamp crowd and it'll round out the younger female PSP market pretty well.

Yes i do realize that ladies gamers are more perfect and specific to their game as compare to gents but i observe that gents gamers are more consistent then ladies but this thing should be more appreciated that Sony has attracted all the people of different ages both male and female.......nowadays games are not played just to utilize their leisure time but it has become a professional stuff and it is played professionally by arranging tournaments of the specific game and the winner geta the prize money of that and this credit goes to SONY.............
