We've got a bunch more kindling for the ever-burning PS3 Slim rumor today, so try and keep up. First and foremost, Kotaku recently uncovered a document from a 7-Eleven in Japan (where 7-Elevens are apparently respected games dealers), which asks that stores stop taking pre-orders for 80GB PS3s as of August 9 -- at the behest of Sony. If legit, this move could be the start of the 80GB's mass exodus, as foretold by the Ars Technica mole in the "Great PS3 Slim Prophecy of 2009."
Other rumors come to us in the form of a Telegraph report, which rounds up a number of potential signs pointing to the svelte system's existence; one of which is an excerpt from a DigiTimes article that states Sony has "ordered enough parts to make one million consoles in the third quarter of this year," which is twice as much as was ordered in the past three months. Are these parts being used to make Slims? PSP Gos? A weaponized mech suit for Kaz Hirai?
From there, Telegraph drops a bunch of unsourced details which should be taken with a sizable grain of apprehensive salt. First, the outlet claims a PS3 Slim announcement "could come later this month" during the GamesCom convention in Cologne, with the actual console appearing by the holidays. According to Telegraph, the console "is expected to" come in two flavors -- 40GB and 80GB -- and will include two unnamed games. Best of all, it will supposedly have a lower price point than current models. Ah, now they're playing our tune.

The pics of the slim shell seem to show it has an IEC connector on it, same as the phat, meaning it has an internal power supply.
I don't think you'll get the other two items though, they'd add cost and that's not the point of the slim.
So no PS3 slim for you.

I'm pretty sure that the PS3 uses 2.5" SATA harddrives. They've been marketing hard on the fact that you can switch out the factory-default harddrive with your own harddrive without voiding your warranty. I don't know if switching out the hdd on the 360 would void the warranty or not but it's good to have that sort of info available.

Don't hold your breath on a price cut along with a PS3 Slim. I'd be surprised if it happens this year. Next year would be a better bet since that marks the PS3 1/2 life cycle.
I'll gladly sell my 60gb once the Slims come out though.
Would be nice if the Slims came with a SSD.

I was actually thinking that an SSD would give reason to shrinking back to a 40/80 lineup again.

They would be crazy not to lower the price with the slim. They're not Apple, they can't shrink everything and expect the consumer to pay a premium for it (hi, pspgo). The PS3's problem doesn't lie in it's design, it lies in it's cost to manufacture and the perception by the consumer of it being too expensive. They need to rectify both of those problems first and foremost.

A 40GB SSD would be cost-competitive with a 40GB HDD, but this is mostly because 40GB SSDs don't make much sense right now anyway, as a single platter 2.5" HDD holds 60-80GB and making it hold less doesn't make it noticeably cheaper.
An 80GB SSD would not be cost-competitive with an 80GB 2.5" HDD. And I don't think Sony is going to come out with models where only the cheaper one is an SSD.
We'll see though.

If you want to switch the hdd for an SSD, you're free to do so because it doesn't void your warranty. That said, I seem to recall an article from anandtech or something where someone switched the PS3's harddrive with an SSD and saw massive improvements in load times and whatnot.

It's already been said, but I think it's the mech suit. It's the next logical step in the console wars. CEOs will take up arms and bring their fight on to the mechanized field of battle. They will outfit all their employes with cybernetic enhancements, game retailers and developers will be forced to choose sides. Robot soldier facimalies of game characters will be created, Master Chiefs, and Samuseses, and Cloud Strifes. Nintendo will have enhanced Scribblenauts to create actual weapons outta thin air for their army. Microsoft will create Red Ring Rifles. Sony will have built a Metal Gear REX outta PS3s. NUCLEAR HOLOCAUST! END OF THE WORLD! THE END IS NEAR!

Bundling it with two games seem slightly absoludicrous. PSN games maybe, but Blu-Ray disc games? Quoi?

This is great news, being that it's pretty much certain that there will indeed be a PS3 Slim coming out later this year. Very nice, I might buy one.
Oh, and the mech suit is for Tretton.
