Sony wipes out interfering ad from WipEout HD
69
Sony has removed a controversial in-game ad from WipEout HD, which slammed the hover brakes on the futuristic racer by increasing load times. A Sony representative informed GI.biz that the commercial was removed while the company attempts to make sure that ads do not affect gameplay. The obtrusive commercial was part of a new deal between Sony and Double Fusion, an in-game advertising firm. It's definitely not a good sign when the first ad out of the gate ends up being a picture-perfect example of consumers' worst fears about in-game advertising.

God, as if there wasn't enough attempts to sell shit to us, now they have to annoy us with it in our games.

I hate burnout because of all the advertising that I ended up paying for and I will not buy another game that goes down that same path
if a game is full of advertising it should be free like over the air TV

They can put adverts in it by all means. But Christ... Not while I'm playing multiplayer, hell not while I'm playing all together!
Put the damn thing when the game starts up, then fine. Also, if I've seen it before give me the option to skip it. I say that's fair. Especially if its the Zuma advert (gah this music!), or the T-Mobile ads (gah not that girls annoying face again!).

Well to be fair I think the load screen ads make sense, annoying as they are, it's not like you can do anything while it's loading anyway. But! The fact that they made you wait longer was completely unacceptable.

Make no mistake boys and girls, Sony nix'd this because of the fury that gamers responded with on blogs like this and others. The last thing they need right now in this economy is a pissed-off loyal customer base.
But it won't be their last attempt to eek out some more cash from us all. The only way to stop it is to continue to howl each and every time they try to bring it back. I for one will NEVER purchase any game that features anything but very subtle advertising in-game. Fight the power!

I don't like the ads in the 360 interface myself, but I use my 360 dashboard a whole lot more than the PS3, especially with Netflix. I never noticed the advertisement in the Wipeout update myself, but if I had I would be really ticked off, I paid for the update, it should be free if it has ads.

At least the ads on xbl are *related*. Not for some insurance company.

The worst part is that the State Farm ad did not "fit" in the wipeout universe. It ruined the immersion so that's why I believe it was not well received. If it had been an ad for the 2097 Audi A8 or some crazy shit like that, I would have been like "cool"

Yeah that's just like bionic commando. Swinging thru this destroyed city but there's gelliette fusion ads every u look... Ugh and when simpsons movie came out, there was those dumb bright yellow posters on every block of I think Crackdown, GTA4..? I can't remember what game it was but I remember for sure how distracting those big yellow ads were.. It was so frustrating.

Burnout: Paradise has those stupid Gillette Fusion vans, too. Whenever I do a showtime I aim for every single one that I see, even if it costs me points by missing a bus.

I remember seeing The Simpsons ads in Skate.
The worst part about the in-game ads like that is they're always all the same. They need to work on introducing a whole bunch at once, so you're not seeing the same damn image over and over.

If there's one thing that's true, it's that requests to Studio Liverpool don't fall on death ears. As is evidenced by how WipEout Pure was a return to form after the uproar regarding the F-Zero esque WipEout Fusion. Not that F-Zero is bad, it's just not as good as WipEout ;)

Blocking domains usually works for getting rid of ads on the internet. I would also assume that blocking them in this game would work because if people were playing offline, they would not be able to play the game because they can't receive the ad.
The problem would be finding this ad provider.

Kudos to you Sony for addressing this issue so quickly. I really wasn't planing on playing Wipeout anymore till it was fixed. The races are too quick to have ads in the loading screens. I felt like I was watching more ad then gaming.

It's like people only do these things because they can get paid. And that's just really sad.

i for one think that sony should put the advertising in the online segment of gaming... cause it's free and we all know xbox isn't so we couldn't really complain then... but yea don't increase load times please but just throw it in the loading screens for matchmaking and such. : )

If you pay for Wipeout HD, and the Fury expansion pack, why the hell should you watch adverts in it?
Steam is free, and they don't advertise in their games, because we pay for them, like we pay for Wipeout HD, it is unjustified to put adverts in a game you pay for. If it were a free game, then why not, I'm quite happy to do whatever for that, but not for something I paid for.

If I drop cash to buy a game, I expect it to be advert free. This has put me off WipEout HD a lot.
