Warner Bros. highlights Mortal Kombat, Spy Hunter IPs in Midway acquisition

After snatching up Midway and dumping some of its execs, Warner Bros. looks like it's finally starting to get somewhere with its acquisition. There's a new guy heading up what is now WB Games Chicago and, according to Develop, Warner Bros. has confirmed that Mortal Kombat and Spy Hunter are now part of its forthcoming plans.

Acquiring these Midway properties gives Warner Bros. opportunities not only for new games (or re-releases of old ones), but also projects "adapted for film or TV, leveraged for consumer products, or licensed to third parties." While we wouldn't mind seeing someone take a stab at a new Mortal Kombat game, we desperately hope Warner Bros. doesn't go for a new movie. The world does not deserve any more of this.

I still think the first MK movie was pretty good.

It was good. They did a lot for what little they had to work with. MK2 was just a mess.

I enjoyed the first one quite a bit. I'm not sure it's what one would consider a "good movie," but I definitely liked it.

MK:Annihilation, on the other hand... Check out Giant Bomb's TANG episode on it. Horrendous.

I'd say the first mortal combat movie is probably the best video game movie out there, I know that isn't saying much but I enjoyed it.

Yeah I agree, I thought it was pretty great for its time. But the sequel was 5 different types of bad. I think it was replacing Christopher Lambert with some fag that turned Raiden into a Glamor Girl.

I remember someone on the message board or review claiming to have freaked out seeing the actress playing Sonya opening her mouth. Apparently it was like a horse coming to eat you alive.

Considering the fact that the first Mortal Kombat was the ONLY good video game-to-movie adaptation that's ever been made, I would not mind a new film one bit.

Well, as long as it's nothing like the second film, anyway. Although Jade and Sindel were pretty hot, if nothing else.

I vote Double Dragon. How does "Rescue girl from gang" become "fight in apocalyptic L.A against Evil Mage Robert Patrick and Power ranger's reject Abobo is anyone's guess.

I'd have faith in a new MK movie if it's done by WB now. They changed their stance and image on just pumping out crappy superhero movies and decided that quality is better. Anyone seen The Dark Knight? MK series/mythos is just another comic form. I would personally love to see where they take the acquired IPs and how far they can expand upon everything with no more licensing limitations.
