Yes, there are new things in Guitar Hero 5! Producer Brian Bright told 1UP about the new "Rockfest" multiplayer, which he described as "a suite of new multiplayer game types in Guitar Hero 5 that can be played individually or in teams." These different games can be strung together in a "playlist" so that each round of multiplayer involves a different goal. That's kind of clever!
The "Rockfest" games include:
"Momentum," in which all players start at medium difficulty, which increases with every 20-note streak and decreases with three missed notes.
"Streakers," in which points are awarded only for consecutive notes played while nude in multiples of ten. "One point for the first 10 note streak, two for reaching 20, three for 30, and so on."
"Perfectionist," in which each section of a song is scored by percentage of correct notes, with the top player receiving four points, the next best player receiving two, and third place receiving one.
"Do or Die," which knocks a player out for the remainder of a section for missing three notes (otherwise known as the "Not Fun" variant).
"Elimination," in which low-scoring players are eliminated at regular intervals.
"Pro Face-Off," which is a basic score competition.
We're surprised to see the inclusion of game mode that deliberately kick players out before the end of the song -- in some cases, quite early into the song. You know, since drop-in gameplay has been the other biggest feature announcement. Bright did say this is for the "more competitive players," so maybe it's seen as compensating for the "Party Play" mode. See some footage of Rockfest play after the break.
All these game modes are fucking pointless and will just make it even harder to find a game online. All we need is a pro face off mode where you are against a person playing on the same difficulty as you (did . They got it spot on with GH3 but have some how managed to fuck it up repeatedly since then. If I play someone on Smash Hits who picks TTFAF and chooses easy again I am going to shit out my internal organs on their face. Just look at 1:28 onwards on the video one guy is drumming medium and the other is on expert+ that has double bass. The mode states that the winner is the person who hits the highest percentage of notes. You have to be on the crack pipe to think that is at all fair.
Because its the same excast thing....why not make it dlc instead of it making a full game? because Activsion is a money hogging company, SEQUAL SEQUAL!!!!!
"In b4 any comments about brands being milked Why does everybody hates Guitar hero? It's not like the videogames they deliver have got any worse just because they publish many games..."
You typed 182 characters. Why is it so hard to type "before"?
If I read that correctly (and believe me, it was tough), you're saying that by adding new options that enhance GH5's multiplayer mode, they are in fact, making it less appealing to the masses? No, let me throw some knowledge your way: You'll notice that, as Guitar Hero games are concerned, they have gotten progressively more and more challenging. Easy is the new Normal, Normal is the new Hard, Hard is the new Expert and Expert is the new Death. Most of the people who are going to play GH5 are going to be looking for these types of challenges to keep the game interesting. And for the newbies out there who STILL haven't picked up a plastic guitar yet, there's party play with the ever-friendly beginner mode.
I don't know if I'm alone with this, but I really couldn't give a flying rats ass what options are in it. As long as I can play it with a buddy and it has some good songs I'm satisfied. I just wish they wouldn't come out with a new game every 4 minutes, but support one game with DLC, like Rock Band does it. And don't start with "Oh, but they have The Beatles and Lego Rock Band". The Beatles will be more of a visual experience next to the music and there are so many songs included in it, it warrants it's own game. The Lego thing, yeah not so much, but atleast they didn't pull the plug out of Rock Band 2 after those things were announced.
While your points are 100% valid, you have to admit, it's nice to see them taking steps to try something new with this iteration of the series. Instead of releasing a Smash Hits II or something rediculous like that.
STorm: What exactly are they trying that's new? There's no innovation in this game. It's the same old car. They've just painted it a new color and made it so you can now, finally, roll down the windows. They're doing what apple has done and succeeded at for years now. Simple, common sense upgrades that you can't get as an upgrade, you have to buy a whole new system for those simple upgrades.
"Beatles will be more of a visual experience next to the music and there are so many songs included in it, it warrants it's own game."
Oh please. That's your reasoning why it's supposedly worthy of a full game? Please, it's Rockband with a "The Beatles" skin slapped on it. Nothing special.
Last time I checked, that's how sequels worked! You can't honestly tell me you've never purchased the sequel to a game in however long you've been playing them. It's how these companies do business. Atleast it's not like Madden, where it's the same game over and over again with 1 new feature. Atleast this upgrade has some meat on it's bones, and that's all I'm saying. GH5 is looking to be a sequel that SHOULD be released. Unlike Smash Hits....
It's so much more then a "Beatles Skin" alot of songs have their unique visuals, it'll take you through the career of The Beatles. There is one particular gameplay addition that actually enhances the gameplay, which is the vocal harmonies. It will have unreleased Beatles material in it, do I really need to go on? I think that'll be the first game that I will start playing on easy first, so I can watch all the visuals.
@StormEagle Someone who criticizes other people's grammar should be able to spell "ridiculous" correctly. On topic: the "arcade game" mentality that's behind these competitive modes is precisely why I prefer Rock Band to Guitar Hero. Rock Band feels like playing in a band; Guitar Hero feels like "beating" a game. No thanks.
Some of this sounds fun, but I wonder how fair it is when players compete with different instruments. Depending on the song, missing three notes on say, the drums, can be a lot easier than missing three on the bass, if you even play A note on the bass during that section.
From what I could tell in that video, everyone had guitars in that mode....not sure if that's a coincidence or not. But as far as the other instruments go and selecting different difficulty levels than everyone else, well, I guess that depends on the confidence you have in your abilities.
wow 20 consecutive notes. that's like half a song on medium/easy. sounds like a blast, neversoft.
i feel like most of these modes are for the small number of people who fc songs (i.e. the outspoken SH/gamefaqs/wherever else communities), not the casual expert or lower player that makes up the VAST majority of GH consumer base.
I feel the same way as max. Most expert players cant hit all the notes in a hard solo and imagine it just changing the difficulty right in the middle if it. And yeah, 20 notes on easy or medium is a lot.
Yawn, most of this shit is culled from Rock Band or built off their ideas. THough they never would have came up wtih 4 players on the same instrument before, because it's fucking stupid. If I went to someones house and they had four people battling guiltar on the same track, I'd turn around and go home.
People say that music games are played out, but it's not music games. What hurts the genre and gives people negative impressions of it are innovationless shit like this.
I way prefer Rock Band to GH, but I'll give Neversoft credit for some of these ideas. Battle mode in GH3 was a bit silly, but some of these modes look great fun.
When I heard the name "Rockfest" mode, I was hoping it was some sort of mode where everybody online would be playing the same song at the same time (ie. 100's of people at the same time) sorta like 1 vs 100. Then a massive leaderboard at the end of each song where you could see how you did compared to everybody who just played.
What they did implement sounds cool, and it's welcomed that they're trying some new stuff! I hope they expand on it since some of those new modes could work well with a huge group (ie. "Elimination" could drop out 1/4 of the players every 1/4 way through the song. Your goal would be to try and be in the top percentage so you could finish.)
Well, they do whore this franchise out for no other, but at least they TRY and add new stuff to it each time. Which is more than I can say for Rock Band 1.1 (even calling it RB1.5 would be generous).
People always defended RB2 by saying "at this point what new stuff is there to add to the music genre", yet somehow Guitar Hero comes up with 10 new things (stupid as some of them may be) for each release.
Yeah. Some times, their additions are gimmicky (Battle Mode, although I do miss the old Guitar Battles. Slash Guitar Battle is one of the best songs in the series!), and some additions just don't work at all (Pooled star power, glad that's gone), some features are just wonderful. (Expert+ is just fantastic!)
The any combo of 4 gameplay and Expert+ modes are something that I really hope Rock Band gets in the future.
It's your mentality that RUINED Pro-Face Off on GH:WT. Where Expert players get matched up with Easy players, and the handicap for Easy Players lets them beat expert players by gigantic margins. This is the reason why there are still players playing GH:III online.
Further proof that the Guitar Hero franchise, and all others like it, cannot come up with new and exciting features to warrant a second, erm, 12th purchase.
one addition im extremely happy about is the fact that they improved the look of the highways. I was really tired of looking at flames and eagles and skulls behind the notes. while it seems kinda stupid, this is a huge step for the franchise
Wow, does everyone bitch this much when Madden 4,000 is released, or Final Fantasy XIXVXIVV, or Call of Duty Franco-Prussian War, or Medal of Honor 77.9? Anyway, I'm probably the minority here, but I still love GH and this looks fun as hell. Plus the new roadie battle mode looks sweet too. Everyone needs to stop crying. It's not like Bobby Kotick is coming over to your house, threatening to jam his chode down your throat if you don't buy the game.
I was excited for GHWT, but it's proved to be a huge letdown. Its primary selling point for me as a Wii owner was DLC (at its launch, a lot of details about RB2 for Wii were still unknown). Vicarious Visions is great and I have a lot of respect for what they were able to do with the platform; my disappointment is primarily in Activision. GH5 has an excellent setlist, and that's exactly why I'm not buying it until the price drops considerably. It's proof that Activision could have released many of these songs as DLC, but they chose to force gamers to pay for a full $50-60 release to get the best songs.
Meanwhile, despite the travesty that was RB1 on Wii, Harmonix stepped up with their RB2 port that offered the best instrument compatibility to date and loads of top-tier songs for DLC. I'm buying Beatles RB at launch, even if I have to pay $60, but I'm not paying more than $20 for this. I hope this is the worse GH launch yet for Activision.
I have a similar mindset. I was excited for GHWT too because RB1 was so botched. But RB2 really set the pace for what music games should offer I feel. I've purchased 3 or 4 DLC songs for GHWT and I've purchased probably 30 RB2 DLC songs. When it's time to play a music game, I ALWAYS put RB2 in now.
I enjoyed GH:Metallica, I enjoyed GHWT, but I'm tired of swapping disks...I want to play songs, not wait. So I never put Metallica or GHWT in any more.
And as well as RB2 has been supported and implemented, I kind of feel that way about the Beatles. It'll be a great game, I'm sure, but it's another disk swap, when I much prefer all my songs available on the same game.
