Golobulus, what the hell are you talking about?

Nobody is preventing Atomic Games from releasing SDiF, the issue is that they need a publisher (i.e. funds) to continue development and eventually distribution.

Not just the games industry; the whole software development industry is like that.

I used to be a software engineer but have given it up and gone back to University to train to be an accountant. Software engineering and industrial/commercial software development is utter hell (and the reason you mentioned is just a tiny fraction of it, but true all the same) and the pay isn't even all that great for the shovels of bullshit you deal with day in and day out.

From my own personal experience (not with redundancy/layoffs, thank God) I know how these guys feel and I can sympathise.

From the full statement posted on Giant Bomb: "We wish to assure the dozens of Marine veterans who have collectively invested hundreds of hours in this project that, while we have been badly wounded, we will fight on."

Yes, your struggle to keep going "Pew-pew!" in front of your development workstations from 9-6pm every day, is very analogous to Marines who suffered permanent injury or disfigurement, in some cases death, fighting in a horrifying hellhole.

Stay classy, assholes.

take it easy it was a nice gesture towards the marines that they probably developed freindships with.

I'm pretty sure they just said that to assure the Marines that their time and effort spent on the game is not going to waste.

It's people like you that kept this game from being released...

Although i knew this game wasn't going to be the next cod4 i was really hoping to play a game based off USA's current on goings in the middle east.

but NOOOOO you want us to keep killing aliens and other BULLSHlT in video games that to be honest i don't care about anymore.

"too soon?" You know, this has ALWAYS been a pathetic excuse to back away from something. We can watch movies, minseries, read comics and books, listen to music, even buy commemorative ceramic plates and statues all based around the war in Iraq.

But let ONE video game be made without renaming the region or the battle and it's "too soon."

Fuck off. Seriously. Why are we the only industry in the world unable to make social commentary on these events while cocksucking little prats like you legitimize moronic ideals of subject matter taboos with "too soon?"

You know what the weird part is? None of the other industries you listed have successfully capitalized on their efforts to recreate the war. Videogames are no different. If somehow you find it justifiable to profit off of human suffering in the first place, I hope you understand that there is a timeframe between the point when something happens to when it becomes memorialized that the average person will need to grieve and forgo desensitizing themselves to the events that took place.

Attempting to breach this time window and make it "cool" to experience the war firsthand is both morally and financially a bad move. You can try all you want to force people out of their habits but you will only end up failing on all fronts.

Seriously, stop trying.

I did, I have, and I know for a fact that it was not widely acclaimed. HBO shows have an extremely limited audience to begin with.

yeah we should just play it safe. I mean I don't know why anyone would try to push the envelope and make a game inspired by actual events. When I found out this game wasn't Halo or MW2, I actually wanted to cover my eyes.

You'd figure someone would pick this up. Controversy only pays in, and it seems like America is ready for an Iraq war experience, with stuff like The Hurt Locker coming out (and being well-received).

Worst case scenario for a publisher is that they get another prestige game that gets them accolades, but no money, which some publishers are willing to undertake (understandably in limited quantities)

Hell, if not this game, why not a First Gulf War game? I loved Desert Combat, but haven't played in quite a few years. Why hasn't a developer done something with that? I think it would be pretty interesting to play on the Kuwaiti's side, during Saddam's invasion. I agree with the above, shooting aliens has gotten a bit stale (there are exceptions, but only a few). As for MW2 crap... Give it a rest, multiple FPS's can live simultaneously.

I don't get it. It's okay to make a movie like Blackhawk Down...recreating a real-life battle in Somalia, but it's not okay to make a video game? We read articles about games being "main stream" constantly, but the fact is that it has not reached that point. Games are just as much of an art form as film and books, but try telling that to your grandmother. This story really frustrates me.
