The gaming community really throws the word "limited" around with little thought of its meaning. Walk down the Xbox 360 aisle of any GameStop -- there's more Halo 3 Limited Collector's Editions than there are stars in the sky. However, it sounds like Infinity Ward's upcoming blockbuster Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 will have a limited edition worthy of the adjective -- no additional copies of the Prestige Edition of the game will be made following the title's release.
In an interview with IGN, Infinity's Robert Bowling discusses the creative forces behind the opulent, night-vision goggles-equipped collector's edition, and explained its eventual scarcity. According to him, only one set of individually numbered Prestige Editions will be produced -- though retail chains have requested the developer create even more prestigious units. Seems like parties interested in acquiring the bundle will need to act quickly -- lest they be forced to resort to desperate, crafty measures.

Got my Prestige Edition pre-order at Gamestop and then found out they stopped taking pre-orders the next week.
Glad I got my pre-order in but now I'm not so confident that they will be able to fulfill it.
Anyhow, as long as I will be able to play what will be the greatest video game ever made I will be happy, goggles or no goggles.

Hey Obie, Do you know when that $10 future purchase thing went into effect? I don't remember seeing it when I pre-ordered my Prestige Edition from Amazon. Maybe I'll get it when the game ships?

Exactly. Actually many months later both Gamestop and Amazon were blowing the Legendary Halo 3 for half price.

For most retailers the Legendary Editions were for the most part limited. Its just that alot of people would pre-order one and when the game came out decided they didn't want to spend 130 on a game and picked up the regular edition. I know my store had about 30 LEs pre-ordered and about 20 of those customers switched to the normal edition.
TL:DR The Legendaries are just those that weren't picked up by pre-orders

The difference is that they continued to make the legendary edition of halo 3 even after the launch of the game. This turned out to be a bad move, since the only people willing to drop 130 dollars were the die hard fans that were pre-ordering anyway. The result is that you can find the Legendary edition of Halo online for 40-50 bucks if you shop around. I actually got it for 50 bucks myself, and then I sold my LE copy to a friend and basically came out with a 30 dollar cat helmet in the deal. For 30 bucks, it's damn sweet (not for 70 though, which is the premium you had to pay to get it at launch).
Unless I see some review that glows about how these goggles are so much better than the toy version you can find at Wal-Mart, I won't be buying the prestige edition. I have no doubt that there will be stock of them left after launch day, even if supplies are limited (it's a recession, and NVG's aren't exactly a necessity)

or maybe it was because all those games were selling a shit ton and stores had trouble keeping them in stock...
nope, definitely not that. They intentionally decided to make less money by shipping fewer units to stores so they could....make more money? Yeah, that works

Actually all the Gamestops I have been in have enough copies of Assassin's Creed for the 360 to build another gamestop with them.

The Halo 3 thing is outdated actually. Months back all GameStops were instructed to remove copies of the game from the Limited Editions and convert them to a normal SKU then give the heads away to customers. If you see a GameStop with Halo 3 head boxes, they just head a fetish for Master Chief's skull at this point--they're not supposed to be there.

seriously, how much does a pair of decent night vision goggles cost? I mean, even if you drop $100 on a pair, they'll probably be better than these

a decent one, like actual Sam Fisher quality would probably be in the high hundreds, but you can get toy ones for like 60. Ars Technica had a review of some 60 dollar ones, i think actually the ones from the company capn planet just linked and they wre pretty good.

The Master Chief head had dropped down to $60, regular price at the time this happened. So they weren't losing any money on the conversion and it freed up space.

I don't see why so many people are so infatuated with this "Prestige Edition."
What are you honestly going to do with night vision goggles or the first call of duty game? (which can be found easily for next to nothing)
If you really wanted both of those so badly wouldn't you just buy them separate?
Also how do you know this game is going to be good?
Have you played it before?
No.
