RAGE screens show up in id Tech 5 presentation
76
Curious what id Software's John Carmack has been doing with that big brain since the 2004 release of Doom 3? The latest engine out of the Dallas-based developer is called id Tech 5 and RAGE is the very first game to take advantage of it. Thing is, this latest batch of information isn't from Carmack; instead, we've been scanning a PDF of J.M.P. van Waveren's – senior programmer at id Software – presentation at this year's SIGGRAPH conference.
Titled "id Tech 5 Challenges: From Texture Virtualization to Massive Parallelization" the 37 page presentation also includes a half dozen high-resolution screenshots of the game, which we've tucked into the gallery below. We know, we know – who cares about screenshots? What you want to hear about is the "texture pyramid with sparse page residency" or perhaps the similarly exciting "latency tolerant computational services model." Well, lucky for you, we've also linked the PDF. Go get 'em!

And the best bit is that this is not a set piece shot, but the whole game should be textured like that. That's what the big hoopla is about.
They mentioned unique texturing before but it didn't look so good, now it seems the texture artists have really gone to town with it.

If you must know, I'm not hating I think the visuals are absolutely amazing.

I've played so many hours between oblivion and fallout, at least 1,000, it would probably feel weird not having bad character animation. Besides, I doubt you could have that kind of graphical detail while having all the content those games had. On current consoles anyway. I call it the law of GTA, it's the content to graphics ratio.

ZeniMax bought id a few weeks ago. Bethesda is also owned by ZeniMax. Hence tmac's comment.

I'm trying not to get my hopes up too high, but this game is looking great so far. Hopefully some new footage or trailers will show up during quakecon.

After Doom 3 and Quake 4 they really have nowhere to go but up. Rage is at least a lot more interesting than either of those so hopefully it'll turn out pretty well.

I don't get it.
When shots and VIDEO of Doom3 came out everyone was claiming they were fake and prerendered. When it came out, everyone said it looked ugly.
Me thinks they're just haters. I for once enjoyed Doom3, a scary and engrossing experience, which surprisingly ran in a lot of hardware as opposed to crysis which was also gorgeous but ran in like a single machine in the whole world at launch >_<
Multiplayer sucked in Doom3 (it was there but it was waaay too simple) but the campaign was full of win (and full of "HOLY SHIT").
And then there's the coop mod :D

Actually Doom 3 looked really good when it came out. I'm talking about how fun the game was to play. I was a longtime fan of Doom I and II, and Doom III was completely different. It focused a lot more on silly predictable scare tactics and a lot less on run and gun action, featured a lot more tiny dark corridors and a lot less big open crazy arenas, and felt more like a straight up horror game than an FPS. Add in silly PDA files and a lack of the really awesome soundtrack that fueled the original Doom, and you have a dissapointment. Not to say that Doom 3 was a particularly terible game, it just wasn't the sequel I was looking forward to.

Doom 3 wasn't a bad game, but it was all the tiny problems with the game play that bugged the crap out of me. Ridiculous spread on the shot gun, empty sound effects, run-up-and-hold-fire-button-till someone-dies gameplay are just of a few of the problems i had. it was just aggravating to play when it should've been much better.
But when Doom 3 came out it was the new engine that everyone was talking about. But that same year before Doom 3 came out, Epic released their video of UE3 which blew the id tech 4 out of the water. I wonder if we'll see a repeat of that in the near future.

I see lots of good texture work here, but that's about it. I couldn't possibly be the only one who is underwhelmed by these screenshots, could I?

color me unimpressed as well. From these screen shots at least, there is nothing amazing to be seen. Seeing some actual gameplay might be a different story, but from these screens and the 'trailer' that was released forever ago, tech 5 doesn't look any better than ue3.

It's not so much the engine I don't like as much as it is the artistic direction they went with.
The sky looks great sure, but to me the rest just seems like something you'd see in a futuristic space movie that takes place on a barren wasteland. It's cool in a certain way, but I'd have preferred more splashes of color and varied landscapes.

while "underwhelmed" might be too strong a word, i certainly see what you're saying. the game's not ugly by any stretch of the imagination, but there are certain PS360 exclusives that i won't *ahem* Convicted Among Thieves *ahem* that have sorta set the bar on consoles. these RAGE screens haven't really approached (let alone crossed) that bar.
still, i can't wait to see (and play) the finished product.

@sonicspike41,
The screenshot you submitted isn't great if you're trying to back up the underwhelmed viewpoint, take a look at those trees with the awful texture work and easily visible geometry. Based on the rest of your comment, it sounds like you're speaking more to the art style than any technical abilities in the engine.
@The Baron,
CryEngine 3 I have not seen enough of to argue the point; CryEngine 2 though? You're daft. As for the god rays? I couldn't say for certain either; but considering Namco's able to pull them off for Tekken 6, I somehow doubt it would be an impossible task for ID... and knowing how important lighting is to them, I'd wager they are dynamic and not merely painted into the skybox.

The textures are amazing but it feels to me like iD has been focusing on nothing but textures since Quake Wars. The environments look fantastic, but judging from the trailer they released a while ago the characters and the lighting look not much better than Doom 3. And while Doom 3 looked great at the time, it's not as cutting edge right now.
Don't get me wrong, the game looks beautiful, but I just feel like it could be better.

@AoE - The landscapes in Unreal Tournament 3 or Fallout 3 look just as good, in my opinion, albeit with a little bit less texture fidelity.
Any engine out there can render a sky box with light rays coming from it.
I just don't find myself particularly impressed. Not as impressed as I was for the jump between Quake 3 and Doom 3. Maybe I'll change my mind when I see it in motion, but for now, it just looks a lot like many other games on the market.

I still think that project-offset's engine is the best. http://www.projectoffset.com . However, they might get butchered by Intel buying them out. Intel wants it to run on their new processor. Which might vary well destroy the game (Seeing how horrible intel drivers are (1 gig for wireless and 1 gig of memory for video tells me somethings wrong)).

AoE,
I fail to see how Marty's daft for using Cryengine2 as a way to measure his slight disappointment in what iD's been presenting with their latest engine and game. Of the four games currently using it (Merchants of Brooklyn, Crysis Wars, Crysis Warhead, Crysis), the latter are still visually unrivaled even when below Very High settings when compared to other games using different engines.

Compared to those two captures I took in game or eFFe's work with the Cryengine2 sandbox editor at Crymod, I'm not overly impressed with what I've thus far seen in RAGE or iD Tech 5.
This is a product of someone tinkering around in the Cryengine 2 Sandbox editor.

FFS, someone please remind me to actually not hurriedly write a post before a social engagement. If there's one thing I absolutely can't tolerate, it's unintentionally writing like an imbecile with an elementary school command over my vocabulary, spelling, and grammar.
