Valve raised quite a stink after announcing a new downloadable campaign for the original Left 4 Dead with only a few months remaining until the release of Left 4 Dead 2. What everyone still wants to know is whether this content will be compatible with the sequel -- and we do mean everyone. In an interview with Edge Online, Valve's Chet Faliszek explained that even the game's creators are unsure whether the new campaign will be playable in the second edition of the zombocalypse sim.
Faliszek remarked that Valve is "struggling" with how the campaign's story elements (that is to say, the in-game chatter between the original four survivors) would work when the new cast is introduced. He says it would be jarring to "put new characters in old places," but recognizes that "there's a whole group of the fans who don't care." What say you, readers? What would you find more disruptive -- re-worked character dialogue, or recently purchased, incompatible DLC?

First, I think they should do it (see what I did there) and it really isn't even that difficult of a thing to do. Hope Valve doesn't start getting lazy.

The compatibility isn't the hard part...
In l4d2, they are 4 different characters... with different characteristics and voices...
So although getting the campaign to work in L4d2 isn't hard... they can't just replace the aspects of the characters looks... they have to change the voices and interactions which is the hard part...
What they should do, is just make bonus chapters... where if you have L4D you can port in the old characters and levels into L4D2... so there would be no need to switch disks.

What I mean is that they should include the original game in with the second... almost like a reverse expansion pack or backwards comparability. Not necessarily like the 1st games characters in the 2nd games lvls.

Could just have the new L4D1 campaign work with L4D2, but have the old characters in it, since you need to download the 'chatter' relevant to the new campaign anyway. Did that make sense?
This way serious players will be able to access that new content without having to swap discs/exit and load up L4D1 off steam.

that could work... But it would have to require ownership of the first game...
Like in the Rock band port to RB2, where you could import all the RB songs into RB2 if you had the disk...
and they would probably not be able to interact with each other...
now that i think of it, it all sounds quite tedious... just switch disks...

Whose to say that the original 4 didn't try to escape to the south
but crashed somewhere, oh, let's say very near to New Orleans?
Then you would have legitimate reasons for everyone being there.
Hell, You could even have a cameo or two.

Buy it if you can find it really cheap. It's definitely worth it if you have friends you can play it with. Playing it with strangers, especially on the 360, is very hit or miss. Playing with the bots is only good for one play through. Bots get very boring after that.

You Can't Really Do That w/ Any Game Besides GH for the DS. Whatever Game You Buy You Can Only Play w/ People that Have That ONE GAME.

Most likely your friends that have L4D1 will buy L4D2 when it comes out...
So the decision is whether or not to play with them now or later...

This would definitely make the DLC more worthwhile for 360 owners. As it is I don't see much point in buying the DLC when the expa, I mean sequel is so near.

What I'm curious about and haven't read anything on is whether there will be achievements attached to the DLC for 360 owners. If we're paying $7 Valve could *at least* code in the cheevos for the survivor mode they have on the PC version since they couldn't put them on the update last time since it was free.

What are you going to I'm in the process of upping mine now. It's a pain cause I went from a 487 socket motherboard to a 775 and now I am having to change my video card processor and ram but hey I'll end with 8gig ram 1g video card and intel core 2 duo 2.4 quad core or 3.2 dual core haven't decided yet.

it seems like a waste to get a core 2 duo and have 8 gigs of ram, it'd be cheaper altogether to get a more updated system since it will last you longer. i'd recommend getting the cheapest i7 with an msi motherboard. you could probably figure out the rest of the components on your own. =)

Im running 4 gigs of ram, 1.8 C2D, 1gb 9800 gt and it works wonderful. I actually have 3 of these and they are running CoD4 on high and TF2 on high. ill upgrade to C2Qs in 2 of them when MW2 hits.

Fellas, fellas, have you considered the ATI/AMD route? Much better bang for the buck and if you plan on playing a lot of Source games, you're in luck! They run much better on ATI cards. A 4870 with 2GB of VRAM is only $200 right now on Newegg.

Exactly - just force the appropriate characters for their related campaigns.

That's a great idea, but you just gave the entirety of L4D away for free, so I'm guessing it's not going to happen.

They should just allow you to port the information to the second game if you have the first think Rock band to Rock Band 2 small fee would be fine for me.

Next time support a single product for a decent set of time instead of trying to create a new Madden franchise with just updated rosters. All they've manged to do is split the install base on what to buy; a decision made even harder if you have friends you want to play online with.

I think the sales numbers for L4D2 will expose the people complaining about it as a vocal minority.
Although Valve needs to get their asses on E3 already.

I've been saying this since before ep 2 came out I seriously think that they have been using the episodes as a tool to get more time into developing hl3 without having people attempting to steal the new source code and they'll later rename hl2 ep 3 to half life 3..... Remeber no one has ever seen any screen shots for ep3 and valve keeps saying it's extremely ambitious...... like as in new game ambitious.... one can only dream

@Victory: A friend and I have always talked about how awesome it would be if a game company announced a game and basically said "It's coming out in 2 months". No delays, no teasers, no countdowns.
Not many companies could really do that and be successful, but I think Valve could for HL. They attempted something like that with HL2 I think, but then it got delayed to hell and back.
Well know how Valve time works...

I'm sick and tired of all the crybabies. L4D had sOOOO much replay value, I got my $47 bucks out of it, tyvm. Anyone who did not is a dumbass. I DON'T GIVE A SHIT IF THE DLC WORKS ON THE NEW GAME OR NOT!!
I'm actually happy that they decided to come out with L4D2 so quickly. I would rather purchase an entire new game than some rinky dink DLC bullshit over and over again. It seems that most of the readers on this site are largely young and immature and expect something for nothing. GET A JOB LOSERS!!

And people wonder why activision milks the hell out of things...
But really, you say it's "rinky dink bullshit" dlc? It's a new campaign, so technically speaking one can think of it as an extra 1/4 of L4D if it's as long as the other campaigns. I don't think it's too much to ask to make it work. Plus people that buy just L4D2 can buy it, so it'll make them more money (more than likely) in the long run.
You're complaining about people complaining. But wait, I'm complaining about you complaining about people complaining. And then you'll likely complain to me... *headexplode*
