Based on this Activision really shouldn't be threatening Sony about the price drop... based on install base the PS3 seems like it's generating more revenue than the 360.

Actually the other way around. But still, Bobby was stupid to threaten to drop the PS3. Does he wants to make $140 million instead of $244 million?

What numbers are you looking at?

In case the question of "What numbers are you looking at?" is directed at me, let me explain:

Install Base: 360's 31.6M, PS3's 24.2M
Revenue: $140M, $104M
Revenue/Install Base: $4.4, $4.3

I was eyeballing it but turns out it's pretty close. My point was it's nowhere near a discrepancy worth making threats.

Fooseball, you're not making any sense.

They never said that the PS3 was making a smaller ratio per installed console, just that there were fewer installed consoles. It costs just as much to develop a game for the PS3 if there are 10 PS3's or 10 billion PS3's, the only thing they care about here is the total amount of revenue, not the amount of revenue per customer.

Think of it this way. If there were a 4th console that was making 10 times as much money per installed console as the 360/PS3, but there were only 5 people in the world that had that console, it doesn't really matter that they're making 10 times as much money per potential customer, does it? Because it costs them the same to develop that game for that platform whether that platform has solid 5 units or 5 billion.

@Vcize: Agreed Fooseball isn't making that much sense with talking about per unit revenue. But the general point stands that of the combined Xbox360 and PS3 revenue for Activision, the PS3 brings in 42% of the total, which do makes the Activision threat about not supporting the PS3 kinda weird as it would basically cut their revenue in half. And I would think that for all of their games the cost of supporting any platform is a quite a bit smaller part of the total development cost, so losing close to half their revenue on a game doesn't really make any sense.

Activision's approach to IP is to milk it till its life is over, and move on to the next IP. There is always room to build another franchise. That's the same philosophy as the old EA. But that doesn't mean it is wrong. They are just pushing one franchise to its max and move on and push the next one.

On the other hand, some publishers (especially Japanese publisher) are much more careful and precious with their IP. So it takes them a lot more time to make the next sequel, but that also means it is less likely to see them come up with a new IP.

Activision's making more money off the PS3 than the Wii.

In conclusion, Kotick was just blowing steam out his ass when he threatened to drop PS3 support.

Good to see that EA's new approach to the Wii is paying off. Their clear efforts deserved to be rewarded.

I'm still not sure how DJ Hero will do. It just doesn't seem to have as much potential in terms of mass appeal, and Band Hero seems downright redundant.

EA does not develop or publish Rock Band. MTV has been using them to distribute the game.

Vcize, I agree I've mentally checked out for Friday.

Activision's logic is that if there was a PS3 price drop the install base would be closer to the 360's and then by the logic above the revenue would be similar for both. I guess my only point was that it is still adding significantly to the revenues of Activision and Kotick shouldn't be posturing so much.

But your point is well taken. Revenue is a BS stat anyway since they could easily be making more on the wii with lower revenue based on the lower cost to develop a game. What is clear is that the PS3 isn't hurting Activision's bottom line nearly enough for them to stop developing for Sony.

Can someone explain the difference in Joystiq calculations and these:

They appear to be saying opposites to me....

MCV was using EA's numbers calculated using GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles). We used non-GAAP numbers, which are generally a better representation of actual retail performance. GAAP numbers include things like deferred revenue. There are other factors in GAAP numbers that really aren't relevant for this kind of comparison.

Again, in general, non-GAAP numbers are a better indication of actual performance.

"not to mention Rock Band punch them pretty hard."

World Tour outsold Rock Band 2 by a 4:1 ratio, btw

Just imagine all the people with hacked Xbox who pirate most of these games. The revenue would be much much higher.

Blame Microsoft for the map packs. Bungie wanted to make them free but they were told to decide between Cold Storage and Legendary. Epic had the same problem-they were forced to charge for Gears maps. And they don't allow the packs to be compiled into one download (a la Killzone 2) out of greed as well.

FFS - When Kotick was threatening Sony, he was having a pop at the high development costs of the PS3 compared to the other platforms. He was saying that the installed base and the revenue that the PS3 generated RELATIVE TO IT'S DEVELOPMENT COSTS was causing them a headache - and as a developer I totally agree.

Not only is it a factor of complexity harder to develop an identical game for the PS3, the devkit costs are astronomical compared to the Wii & the X360 - so the identical game must sell more on the PS3 to justify the costs -- was what he was saying. As you can see, currently it's not achieving that - hence the warning from Kotick.

Matthew Perry, count DLC songs and we'll see how those ratios match

Just because the core game was outsold doesn't mean that Rock Band is not taking any market space

You guys are making this a little more harder than it needs to be. For now, 360 is outselling PS3. No, not by a millions and millions of dollars like people and the media are saying. Heck, PS3 may even catch up with the upcoming price drop we
all know will happen. Both systems are appealing to consumers, therefore, the war will continue, and for a while it will probably be a tie.

My analysis: When PS3 drops it's price, it's sales will soon be equal to that of the 360. But next year, when Natal and Sony Motion Control releases, people will go for Natal. I'm sorry guys, Sony's new motion control is pretty amazing, but I think consumers will go for Natal for obvious reasons. Natal is extremely innovative, and people will go for that. PS3 is a great system, and I don't think it should lose this console war. However, for a while it will definitely rival the 360, and I think people will be impressed by the amount of sales the PS3 will get.

I can't wait to see where the console war goes and how it will end.
