Personally, as an RPG fan first and a shooter fan second, I enjoyed Fallout's FPS-styled controls that didn't go as so far as to make it a shooter. I loved using VATS and getting headshots from across the map.

But yeah, Borderlands seems like a different beast. Can't wait to try it.

I'd say that I'm an RPG fan first, but I do still enjoy an FPS (I just don't really bother bbuying them often since there always seems to be a "new & better" one around the corner). And I would have to say that VATS was fun for a period.. but at some stage it lost its appeal, and became something of a routine.

Not quite as deep as a true turn-based, and not quite as fun as a true shooter. Who really knows if I would have enjoyed Fallout3 more with FPS style combat, though.

Anyhow, I'm not a fan of the Borderlands art style, but the idea is intriguing. Leveling ftw

I have to agree with sting and crayfish... I really liked Fallout 3, but I didn't go bonkers over it... probably because I wasn't a PC gamer until Quake 2, so I missed out on Fallout's prime, and I think a lot of the hardcore Fallout 3 fans are old school fans. I would probably go just as crazy as the Fallout devouts if someone made a good proper Shadowrun game in the same vein.

I also thought the VATS system got old after a while, and the areas to explore looked more and more the same as the game went on. Really, I had the most fun when I was plowing through the main story, though even then, I got mixed up a bit here and there, which was kind of annoying.

It was good, but I wouldn't agree with all of the GotY's it got.

I'd never heard of the Fallout series before playing it, and I only bought it because I got it super cheap at Circuit City's going under sale. I thought I'd hate it, really. But I really got into it. The world, the personalities, etc... it really was amazing for me. And although I can see the little flaws here and there, every mission had so many options open to me... I only got upset at that game at the very end, where it became hugely uninspired... "You must die, even though you have that mutant friend who can help you!!"

Anyway, sorry you guys didn't like it so much. I guess I'm just the type of guy who loves slow motion head shots!

And the vehicles. They kept talking about customizable vehicles, but they haven't said anything about them lately. Makes me wonder if they were cut. :(

Nah man, no way.

Here's an 8 min gameplay demo. You can see around the 6:20 mark, a vehicle - this model being called an Outrunner. And by the looks of things, yes, all vehicles can be customised.

I've been very curious about this title, since it's gotten a lot of great buzz since E3, but this preview leaves me thinking it might not be my kind of game. I loved Fallout 3, but mostly because of the story and the characters and the far out situations. It sounds like Borderlands is a little on the bland side, at least during the section Joystiq played.

Well, I just finally got to try the Huxley beta. I'm hoping they don't give the PvE the shaft. I'm hoping for some challenging missions that I can co-op with some friends for loot. The addicting properties of a real MMO mixed with the fun of a FPS really does it for me. Though, if it's not much more than the obvious UT clone PvP masked with an MMO skin, I'll be disappointed.

It's good to see that there is an alternative to a game that I've been waiting for for the better part of 5 years. This game sounds pretty good, so if I get let down by one, maybe this one will fill the gap. It does sound like more of a Fallout 3 style game than what Huxley is going for.

I hope all the bosses are like WoW raid bosses. Where there is a specific strategy to beat them and not just shoot it until it drops.
