Valve researching sign language for use in Half-Life 2: Episode 3
83
Valve's Gabe Newell appears to have recently conducted a focus group with deaf individuals in order to learn more about sign language and how it can be applied to games, notably the upcoming Half-Life 2: Episode 3. Why? To help develop Alyx's character, and further the animation technology implemented in the Half-Life games. Newell explains: "[Alyx] had a crush on someone who was hearing impaired, so she taught Dog how to sign so she could practice. Something happened, maybe, the person is off fighting the Combine someplace else, but that's why she and Dog would start signing with each other when they wanted to communicate without making noise, or communicate without other people knowing ... It gave us the excuse to build the technology for signing."
The focus group responds by noting the importance of facial expression whilst signing. While the Half-Life franchise has been known for its believable facial animation, it might take even more to fully realize the nuances necessary for authentic signing. It'll be interesting to see if Valve is up to the challenge.

All this tells me is that Episode 3 is at least another 2.5-3years away.

'Course not, I just feel bad that they're powerless to voice their opinion when some guy goes:
"We're facing a million to one odds. You need to take this bomb to the heart of the swarm, battling thousands, no, TENS of thousands of ruthless, mindless drone soldiers. You have no support, no formal training, and a crowbar."
Guy #2: "You can't! It's suicide!"
Guy #1: "No, he can do it. We have to believe in him, now. We'll always remember you. Now, GO!"
You: "..........."

Also took me a moment to figure out what was going on. Plus, I was excited to see the first screenshot of in-game Episode 3, but that's just Left 4 Dead 2.

It's a little disturbing how photo-realistic it is, isn't it? It's gonna harsh my I'm-an-unstoppable-killing-machine vibe.

I don't think I've ever heard a Gabe Newell fat joke in my entire life.

Werent you paying attention? The upgrade is sign language. Its totally going to be worth the wait, the game may only be a couple hours long but god dammit it will have sign language tech.

Just write a note, tape it to a taco, tape that to a brick, and throw it through Valve's window. Certainly a lot easier. (Try to get it taco-side up.)

I'm normally a big valve fan ever since HL orignally released. Since the OrangeBox tho they been seemly doing nothing useful. (Yea I'm gonna get yelled at but I don't beleive L4D is really up to Valve quality and is lacking... Plus the release of L4D2 is upsetting to not just be DLC). Now we gonna distort the awesome story line of HL series because we want to make a gimicy sign language system. Don't get me wrong I have actauly 3 good friends who game def. But whats next we gonna have to have a guy in a wheel chair in every game now too?

Somewhere, a wheelchair-bound man is watching people playing Wiisports, and crying silently.

Well, he didnt have a wheel chair but Eli had one of those scoop looking mechanical legs. But imagine if there was a character in a wheelchair, only his wheelchair was roving death machine with turbo nos and lasers! pew pew!

Why does the implementation of a deaf character have to "distort" the story?

Im not saying distort... but you should add a character just because you want to show off your flashing new system for sign language. Thats like wii games adding a part in the game that just has you shake the wii mote for no reason just so they can say they used the wii controls...

That's why it's taking so long? Sign language? Wow...

Yeah, for him it's more profitable to develop sign language in games than develop for the PS3...

While I can see why this would be cool, especially from an animation standpoint, it doesn't make sense. I Alex and Dog have known sign language all this time, why haven't they ever used it in HL2, episode 1, or 2?
And after all this time, this is the first bit of news about the contents of Episode 3? Odd.

Simple. They haven't needed to. DOG's actions in the past games haven't exactly been sneaky.
