For fans of the NES' flagship pugilism sim Punch-Out!!!, the latest edition of Iwata Asks is chock-full of tidbits about the game that you probably didn't know. For instance, Nintendo Entertainment and Analysis Division's Makoto Wada reveals a long-hidden secret that makes fights against Bald Bull go much easier. Also, Glass Joe? He's got osteoporosis. Yeah, you should feel bad. Poor guy.
However, the most entertaining unearthed secret is the fact that Shigeru Miyamoto never signed off on the use of Mario as the game's mustachioed referree. In Miyamoto's own words, "we didn't have an approval system when using Mario images back then and it went right past my check." The interview transcript adds that he laughed after saying this, but we imagine at least one stink-eye was shot across the table.

Miyamoto was just afraid of taking an angry punch from tyson, so he let it slide.

I imagine it would be akin to taking a sledge to a miniature glass statue.

I think Tyson was afraid of having the tea-table upending his ass, so they kept it very well hidden until after printing had begun.

It wasn't a very well kept secret. That was the only way I could get past bald bull. And I didn't discover it either. It was shown to me by a buddy of mine.

you are correct sir. you stole the link right out of my....mouth? anyway, mike tyson's punch out was the pinnacle (yes pinnacle) of party games way back when. i still remember the code to get straight to tyson: 007-373-5963. ahhhh, nostalgia. i would still play this game if i had a nintendo.

That's not Mario. That is actually Wario trying to make an honest living before he gave in to his evil ways.

I just kind of assumed that everyone knew about the bald bull charge punch. That's the easiest way to take him down, and i've been doing it since I was like 6.

Everyone knows the trick to hit him. Not everyone knows the timing is based of the flash bulbs to the right of him. My Bald Bull 1 hit punch only landed like 1 out of 3 times.
