Go look at how Chess bourd is set-up now look at hoiw this is set up...
"Black's side" has Bowser is the queen and Bowser Jr. is the King!? I might understand this consept if Super Mario Sunshine was the theme of the set.
This set is messed up, and I would rather have a set like this...
White's team:
pawns should be a regular powerups... Mushroom, Flower, Leaf, Hammer...ect
Rooks should be the Mario statue from SMB3 (NES/GBA)
Knight's should be Green Yoshi with Baby Mario and Pink Yoshi with Baby Peach
Bishops could be Luigi and Dasiy
King and Queen could be Mario & Peach
Black's team:
pawns would be the common kopa troopas, gomba's and such
Rook's would be Hammer koopa's (forgot name)
Knight's would be Birdo with Baby Bowser and another Birdo with Bowser Jr.
Bishops could be Waluigi and Wario
Queen would be Wart (SMB2)
King would be Bowser

this is cool i love chess. if i got this peach woul be queen and luigi would be a bishop with daisy. though as of right now luigi is in a more powerful position.

I don't envy whoever gets stuck playing the Mario side and having to remember who's playing which nonsensical role. On the plus side, I suppose you could negotiate and swap, say, Baby Bowser for Peach and... paint Luigi as Mr. L? I'm not sure where I'm going with this.

Actually this works fine. If you only want the set for display purposes, then feel free to put the pieces where ever you want them. If you actually want to play chess, the having two very similar figures for the bishops (which should be identical) makes sense and would be less confusing.

While Luigi as the Queen is fixed fairly easily, just swap toadstool for Luigi, having Coins and Koopa shells be the pawns is a strange choice. Id have the pawns be Mushrooms and Goombas then have the Rooks be Koopa Troopas or even better Hammer Bros. Im not much of a Chess player but i see this being very popular.

I would say much more confusing is that in this picture, Bowser Jr. is the king and Bowser is the queen on the black side.
