the consoles, they hate you. i've never had a problem with any console i've ever owned (good luck?).

N64: flawless (and very fun whenever friends came over, i still break it out every once in a while)
Gameboy Color: perfect
GBA SP: perfect
PS2 fat: flawless
PSP-1000: flawless
PSP-2000 (hacked): amazing
80GB MGS4 bundle PS3: flawless

i'm looking forward to buying a DS and 360 within the year. no worries about the DS, it's just the 360 that has me slightly worried.

Might be your bad luck or ways on handling your consoles. I like lists, so I'll add.

NES - No problems (well, except for the common "need to blow on cartridge" stuff)
SNES - No problems
Sega genesis - No problems
Sega CD - No problems
Sega 32X - No problems (except for being a 32X...I told my mom not to buy it for me)
Game Boy - Gave strange lines on left/right of screen. Repaired.
Game Gear - No problems
PS1 (very first model) - No problems
PS2 (Slim) - No problems
PS3 (CECHE01) - No problems
PSP (slim) - No problems.

With the exception of my game boy, I've had no problems with any console or handheld.
I've tried all of my consoles except my NES recently and they all still work flawlessly.
Maybe I have good luck, but it seems that most other people on Joystiq do too.

@Nerdy Desi - If your PS3 died within two weeks you should have made a warranty claim and got it fixed for free. Same goes for the 360 if it failed within three years and if the issue was covered under the extended warranty at the time of the defect.

_________________________________________________________________
My List as best as I can remember in the order I think I owned them -

Atari - No major problems
NES - Stopped reading cartridges
Turbo Graffix 16 - Still works flawless
Super Nintendo - Still works flawless
Nintendo 64 - No major problems. Sometimes there will be display issues
Sega Game Gear - Still works but the screen had dead spots
PS1 - Disc Read Error & game freeze issues, Never bought a second one
Dreamcast - No major problems. The disc tray button still sticks sometimes but it's a beast of a console
Phat PS2 (3) - Disc Read Error (2x), randomly froze games - upgraded to PS2 Slim
Slim PS2 - No major problems - still works fine but gave it away after PS3 came out
Gamecube - Still works fine
X-Box (2) First one stopped powering on, second one stopped reading discs
PSP 1000 - Worked fine for years - upgraded to 3000
PSP 3000 - Still works fine
DS Phat - Worked fine for years - upgraded to Lite
DS Lite - Still works fine
Xbox 360 - Multiple RROD's, Disc Read Errors, HDD Corruption, Disc Scratching, incorrect region coding for dvd playback, intermittent video issues (random 2-3 second black screen) - was always fixed for free - sold last Christmas - I guess I only technically had one since it always got fixed. I think I had sent it in a total of 7 times for different hardware related failures.
Wii - Still works fine - had to have the disc read thing cleaned after SSBB came out, random issues with the sensor bar intermittently losing it's signal.
PS3 - Still works fine - hard drive caddy had to be replaced (free) after I upgraded because they were machined in too tight. I've had a few intermittent video signal issues but nothing major.
_________________________________________________________________
Now that I think about it most of the problems started with the disc based media. Go figure. The crazy thing is I still have most of these consoles and they are all pretty much operational. One things for sure - they don't build them like the used to do in the 80's.

I really don't understand Sony and their PS3 backwards capability. They tout the power of the PS3 as FAR superior to anyhting out there yet they can't create an emulator to play PS2 games? I honestly belevie that a 100% software emulator for PS2 games could work at close to 100% accuracy but why isn't Sony working on doing that? Sure, it would take some work and R&D money but it seems that enough people are complaining about this and that alone would validate a project like this.

PS2 software emulation on powerful gaming PCs still sucks. Only a handful of games work, and even then, they have loads of bugs.

What makes you think Sony would be able to get it running at all on the PS3? I know Sony have done patents and stuff, but I just don't think it's powerful enough to emulate the PS2 ... and if (by some miracle) they *do* manage to get it working, it'll most likely only work for a small number of games.

Hyams, the fact that Sony knows without exception every trick and idiosyncrasy of the PS2 hardware means they have an edge over non-professional tinkerers working to reverse-engineer the chipset for software emulation. More to the point, they also know all of the tricks of PS3 programming, so they could easily get it optimized for the hardware much faster than a hobbyist could. Emulation is, at its core, simply a matter of translating one set of machine instructions to another on the fly, and it's much easier when you know what those instructions are on both sides of the equation, as well as what they'll do and the quirks involved.

Honestly, I think Sony does have a software BC tool/"app" that they're waiting to release. Once PS2 sales drop enough that they don't see a need to sell the hardware, they'll do so to scuttle the trade of used PS2s. Sony also has a vested interest in keeping new PS2 games selling (license and manufacturing fees), and once the BC app is released, you'll see a spike in PS2 software sales.

I want BC, but mostly so I can do away with frigging memory cards once and for all... as soon as I figure out how to get them off my PS2's HD and onto the PS3's.

To Hyams Comment about PC PS2 emulators being buggy and don't work very well. The people who make that emulator (or any emulator) don't have most of the info that the Sony programmers have. The PS2 emulator is made by reverse engineering the PS2. That is a ridiculously hard task when talking about a relativly advance system structure like that of the PS2. The sheer fact that an emulator for the PS2 has been made to run on a PC purly by reverse engineering is proof enough that a PS2 emulator on the PS3 should be relativly easy to do when the programmers have all the info they need right in front of them.

You say this, but look at the half hardware BC, half software BC on the old 80GB models (and the EU 60GB models) - it's half hardware, but still only manages around 80% compatibility, with many games featuring strange bugs.

Full software BC - even with Sony's knowledge of the two console - requires a lot of power. Power I doubt the PS3 has.

Now, I could be wrong - I'm just some random dude on the internetz, after all - but the fact that Sony have so far been unable to provide full software BC, and the fact that their half-hardware BC is buggy, makes me doubt it.

And don't get me wrong - I really *want* software BC; my 60GB died and got replaced by a BC-less 80GB model, so I'm personally missing the feature - I just don't think it's coming.

If they've got it going already, there's absolutely *no* reason for Sony to hold it back. They make more money off of PS2 software than PS2 hardware, so holding back PS2 BC in order to improve PS2 hardware sales makes no sense. Not to mention the fact that PS2 BC would also give a boost to PS3 hardware sales, which would in turn boost PS3 software sales.

The only conclusion I can draw is that they haven't put PS2 BC on the PS3 yet because they haven't got it working ... and if they haven't got it working after all these years, then I suspect I'm right in saying it may well not be possible.

@Hyams, if they try they can make better ;] as other people said if bunch of armature programmers made PS2 emulation on 90% compatibility (PCSX2 runs MGS3, BC PS3 don't o.O) based of reverse-engineering, the professional programmers with clear specification of hardware can do miracles ;] They don't need to use old crappy code, maybe they planed to fix all BC issues, but BC just been droped by higher-ups, so they stopped working on it. besides, they patented PS2 (specifically EE+GS chipsets) full-software BC month ago, so looks like they working on it :>

You are wise sir. Xbox Live and its features does not justify a high failure rate( I loved my 360 to death twice since launch date.) Sony will eventually match those features. Even if they don't the game gems that Sony likes to put out justify the system purchase.

To Hyams comment about BC. No doubt that the 50/50 hardware/software is far for perfect. That is why they NEED to put more R&D dollars into the mix and squeeze all the juice they can from the cell processor arcitecture. I'm sure it's possible but like I said before it WILL take more R&D and more R&D dollars to make this work correctly. Look at Microsoft, they still don't have some key Xbox games working on the 360 (probably never will). Microsoft admits that it is not worth the time and effort to get these remaining games to work. That goes to show that emulation is a project that takes a good amount of time and manpower. Unlike Microsoft though, Sony does not have the luxury of a first class current generation PS3 library. Sony needs all the BC they can get because their PS3 game lineup is getting smoked by Microsoft and Nintendo. At this point Sony would of been better off if they kept selling the PS2 and shelved the PS3 for a while. It sounds crazy but so does the fact that the PS2's are STILL selling hot after 10 years.

The PS3 has no games argument is so 2007.

It's got all the multiplatforms and the best exclusives hands down this year and arguably last year as well. The games aren't the problem it's the cost of entry. The PS3's that still had software emulation for BC played all the top PS2 games anyway.
