I can't tell you how many hours of my life I wasted playing Civilization 3. I'm turned off by 4 and the 3D graphics but maybe I'll give it a go again.

I've never purchased an Apple product, diehard PC/Windows fanboy but it looks like I will cave in and purchase the next Ipod Touch when it comes out this fall. The App store is too enticing, if they get a Dragonball Z Budokai game up there like on the PSP, I am in heaven. Good luck with the controls though.

I hear that there have been unofficial D-Pad and buttons that clip onto the Iphone/Ipod Touch to help especially on jailbroken ones which can play PS1 games for instance. Would be great if Apple released this as an official add-on, then the platform really could compete against the PSP.

Compete against the PSP? What is wrong with people. the iPhone is not a gaming system.
Half-assed games on its "application store" do not a game system make.

They're not all half-assed games. Alot of them are actually very good. And, call me crazy, but I think the iPhone is doing better at being a game/video/music/phone device than the PSP, which is what it originally set out to be.

Amongst the plethora of shovelware in the crApp store, there are a few gems that I have come to really enjoy like Flight Control, Who Has the Biggest Brain, Doodle Jump, MUST.EAT.BIRDS. and Knights OnRush just to name a few. Usually, companies like ngmoco and GameLoft provide some excellent iPhone games but it is true, the majority of games [and other software] available are complete and utter crap.

Give the Ipod Touch a D-pad and buttons and expandable memory and its just about the perfect pocketable entertainment device.

In my opinion, the PSP is better at "hardcore" handheld gaming whereas the Ipod Touch is better for just about everything else. Playing a long RPG on a PSP if you commute a lot would be great, but that's not me. I just need quick bursts of fun and several Ipod Touch apps do that fine. But I really like Shin Budokai on the PSP and if that was on the Ipod Touch, drool.

Ok, you guys have fun playing around on something with no buttons or controls and thinking it is a gaming system. 98% of games on the Apple store aren't in the same league as other real portable systems. Nice try though

Why do people like Freedom Town pop out of the woodwork every time something about an iPhone game is posted? 98% of the 6000 currently available App Store games still leaves you with over 100 quality games if your stats are in order. I couldn't name 100 quality games for NDS, PSP, and maybe even GBA combined.

Doesn't really matter though. Who has time to play games all the time, let alone room to carry all their portable consoles and any game you might want to play with you at all times? My mobile is with me every second of the day, and if I want to play a quick game for whatever reason, there are more than enough good iPhone games on my memory that I can play.

I own both an Ipod and the PSP and I prefer to game on the Ipod. It provides a quicker fix and if I want to spend any time on a game there is almost certainly a better console version of any decent game for the PSP. I love a few PSP games, like loco roco that I can't play anywhere else, but most of the games on the PSP are cheap ports of console games and jrpg games that I could care less about.

I thought gaming on the touch would be weird without buttons too, but it is not. Some games that use the touchscreen to simulate thumbsticks and buttons I avoid. There are plenty of games that have unique touch based interfaces that I have found a few gems. I prefer the quick nature of these games as well so I can just jump in, play, and jump back out within the time it might take me just to get started playing on the psp.

OK, Freedom Town, you stick with your PSP and I'll leave mine on the shelf and use my iPhone.

Then we're all happy, right?

Oh, except for you... because you aren't happy that others are happy with a different solution, and somehow that affects you.

I can see what freedom is trying to say (albeit crudely) through the apple bashing, and I kind of agree with him. The point is that the iPhone as a gaming device is not a good device for anything above the semi-casual; that is to say any game requiring moderate concentration and depth doesn't really belong on the iPhone/iTouch. The reason why I can agree with this is because when I play my DS, it's usually not on the road, but rather when I get to the place I was going to on the road. If I'm away from town, it's great to get some nice gaming in. Last year I was away for two weeks, and went through TWEWY in my spare time there.

If I'm on the road, I'm going to be listening to music (iTouch, or in my case Zune), or sleeping, or talking to someone with me. I'm probably not going to be playing any game to far above a quick and casual game, a modern version of Tetris.

Summed up: iPhone has the power to make intense games, but control system with function of device lends itself to more casual ones.

@Freedom Town: I suppose you tried them all and can give a well-funded opinion based on your experience.

Provided you ever touched (no pun intended) an actual iPhone/iTouch.

Fact is, the iPhone/iTouch is technically superior to the DS and the iPhone 3GS comes even close to the PSP. One main reason why a couple of games simply suck on the iPhone is that the developers think too conservative and think they can simply translate games written for systems with controls sticks or buttons on something that deliberately uses a completely novel control scheme.

Guess what: it is possible to create awesome games that work very well with touch and tilt controls when you start to think out of the box. I guess you aren't ready for that.

@Freedom Town - You sound like an angry 14 year old after being told that Sega is better than Nintendo.

The PSP is a good portable system and has some great titles, however, even the newest version of the PSP is still too big to fit in a pocket. Mean while the iPhone and iTouch is very small and allows a lot of game play aspects and fits in my pocket. True, there is a lot of crap games/apps for the devices but so does the PSP.

To name a game play aspect, Ruse comes to mind, if you saw the E3 Ubisoft presenation, where the players were using a touchscreen to play the game, it was pretty jaw dropping, unfornately the game play isnt like that for the actual game but the possibility is abled on the iTouch/iPhone, not the PSP.

To give some another pro for the iTouch/iPhone and con for the PSP, is the accessiblity for anyone not in the industry or able to spend a lot of money on all the licenses, to make games/apps for the iTouch/iPhone, this alone makes it a better system imo.

I have both the iPhone and a PSP and I use them both for different times and different games. Final thought/note, a d pad and buttons doesn't make a game.

The iPhone OS clearly has very few games at the same level of detail as the biggest and best DS and PSP games. Puzzle Quest, Peggle, and now Civilization Revolution. So if someone only thinks video games are worth getting if they meet these criteria, there are almost no games on the App Store that they would like. For everyone else, there are lots of very, very good casual games that can be bought for very cheap. Of the three mentioned above, I already own Puzzle Quest on the DS, and Peggle and Civilization IV (so there's no need to get Revolution IMO) on the PC. I bought Peggle on the iPhone OS when it went on sale to 99 cents, and I'd buy Puzzle Quest if it got that cheap too, even though I still haven't beaten the DS version.

I've bought over 40 games for my iPod Touch and I've probably only spent $60-$70. Almost every game I've bought has been $1 or $2, and I don't think I've spent more than $3. Although many of them are similar to what you can find for free online, others are highly polished like Toki Tori, Rolando, Azkend, and Isotope, to name a few. And of course being able to take them with me on my iPod Touch is much more convenient than requiring the laptop and internet connection for a Flash site, so I consider the money well spent. If the iPod Touch had better battery life, I wouldn't even take my DS with my on business trips any more.

Boy, this game release just made my whole day when I saw it listed on the app store. Only $5 and I instantly had one of my all-time favorite DS titles on my iPod Touch. (Also noteworthy is "Duke Nukem 3D"...)

Now, if only we could get "The World Ends With You", "Final Fantasy Tactics" and an iPhone version of "Yu-Gi-Oh: World Championship Edition"...
