Rumor: Spielberg looking to produce Halo movie
The Halo movie may be dead to Neill Blomkamp and Peter Jackson, but it's apparently not dead dead, as IESB reports Spielberg is in negotiations to produce the feature film. Spielberg only had to read Stuart Beattie's script before wanting to tackle the project, IESB claims, which focuses on The Fall of Reach, the prequel to the original Halo game written by Eric Nylund.
This likely comes as either bad news or good news, depending on your feelings toward Spielberg these days. Some enjoyed his recent Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, while others still remember those stupid walkie-talkies.

ORGASM.
Captain Planet (now accepting new Planeteer recruits) @ Aug 10th 2009 12:37PM
For our younger readers, the "walkie talkie" is referencing the 20th anniversary edition of E.T. in which Speilberg replaced guns with walkie talkies in certain scenes.
And go ask your mom what an orgasm is. I am not qualified to answer that question.
Mr Khan @ Aug 10th 2009 12:43PM
He made that change because, 20 years wiser (and having become a parent since then), he realized exactly how objectionable some parents might find a movie that portrays Federal agents hunting down a little kid with real guns.
I still don't agree with him, but at least his motives were sincere
Storm Eagle [Resident Capcom Megafan] @ Aug 10th 2009 12:44PM
Yeah young readers, as far as the Capt. is concerned, orgasms are crimes against nature.
Hypocrite!
Captain Planet (now accepting new Planeteer recruits) @ Aug 10th 2009 12:48PM
Everytime a person orgasms, God kills a kitten.

cuteSAVAGE @ Aug 10th 2009 12:54PM
His motives weren't sincere... A determined kid trying to save something or someone he or she loves would plow through a brigade of walkie-talkie armed officers. With weapons it showed he had no fear and truly cared for ET. The change was a joke. This is a perfect example of morality skewing would-be perfect portrayals of human condition.

Blomkamp & Jackson should do this film.

I'm not so sure it was about the guns--or who had the guns. In the original, the government had guns. I'm not sure they would have digitally enhanced the movie if it were just a couple of generic "villains". Government, we are supposed to believe, is benevolent.
Duke @ Aug 10th 2009 1:48PM
Have to agree with cuteSAVAGE here. The changes were a total joke. Last I checked, walkie talkies were not the method used by US government agents to scare anyone, including children...or aliens in their bicycle baskets.

I got your app Leeroy. I need to know if you know Karate. Only then can I make my decision.
Cj @ Aug 10th 2009 12:36PM
As long as hes paying the bills but not adding any of his recent spectacular direction to the film then ok. We need a good director though. Someone bad ass. If someone says Brett Ratner, so help me!
Storm Eagle [Resident Capcom Megafan] @ Aug 10th 2009 12:38PM
or Michael Bay......*shivers*
JaneWellsJr @ Aug 10th 2009 12:39PM
How about Brett Ratner?

Or Michael Bay!

What a twist!
(Truth be told, I do like M. Night. He's just easy to poke fun at :D )

How bout Tim Burton! and Master Chief will be Johnny Depp LOL!
Travis @ Aug 10th 2009 1:16PM
I will not rest until Uwe Bolle makes this movie.
a Halo movie is going to be gay anyways
The Dark Wayne @ Aug 10th 2009 3:55PM
God I dont even want to think about what it would be like if Tim Burton made a Halo movie
Durden @ Aug 10th 2009 5:30PM
I would shit if he made a Batman movie... Wait...
Shit!
Doug @ Aug 10th 2009 12:37PM
Key word: "produce" the films. If he's not directing it, you won't get Spielberg. But you might get Michael Bay - a fate worse than death to Halo fans like me. If Spielberg decides to direct, just hope you get the "Close Encounters"/"Minority Report" Spielberg, not the "Always" Spielberg.
Storm Eagle [Resident Capcom Megafan] @ Aug 10th 2009 12:42PM
Adds Jurassic Park, The Lost World, Saving Private Ryan and Schindler's List to the "Good" Spielberg list.
cuteSAVAGE @ Aug 10th 2009 12:46PM
Gotta love Munich.
Lone Starr @ Aug 10th 2009 4:53PM
You forgot the quintessential monster movie -- Jaws.
Jerk Face @ Aug 10th 2009 5:04PM
Jaws is the shiiiiiit. Top five of all time, for me.
maveric101 @ Aug 11th 2009 12:38AM
i actually loved the new transformers movies. Bay isn't bad for everything, but i don't think he would be good for Halo.
Storm Eagle [Resident Capcom Megafan] @ Aug 10th 2009 12:37PM
Good times. Good times. The thing about KotCS is you had to let it be a movie and just have fun with it. Like the whole jungle jeep chase scene was just horrible but the movie was great all around. All I have to do is remember that Spielberg can do great movies and my faith in this movie is solidified.
Shmil @ Aug 10th 2009 3:28PM
Fridgerator that's all I'll say
R.U.Sirius @ Aug 10th 2009 3:57PM
Yeah, can't get more pulpy than with the fridgerator scene. It epitomes the idea behind the whole Indiana Jones adventure series. I loved the fridgerator scene.
LaughingTarget @ Aug 10th 2009 12:38PM
Spielberg hasn't made a decent movie in 12 years, all of them seem to involve a lame alien ending (see Indy or AI). That may work for Halo since aliens actually make sense.
Ben @ Aug 10th 2009 12:43PM
I wouldn't say 12 years, that's a little unfair. Catch Me If You Can, Munich and Minority Report are all really good. I quite shamefully enjoyed The Terminal as well, actually.
BananaBoat @ Aug 10th 2009 12:48PM
It takes awhile to recover from Saving Private Ryan levels of awesome. He did do Band of Brothers however (which was EPIC) and he's currently working on the HBO miniseries "The Pacific" which should be incredible (it ought to be, the budget is something like 250 million dollars)
The man has some good movies in him yet, though not in a producing role (I have a feeling the word "executive" will show up in front of producer if this news turns out to have any merit)
FraGNeM @ Aug 10th 2009 1:11PM
@ BananaBoat:
I had no idea Spielberg/Hanks were working on another HBO mini-series. I LOVED Band of Brothers. I'm also currently working my way through From the Earth to the Moon.
'just thought I'd pop my head in to say "Thanks!"
Guinea Rabbit @ Aug 10th 2009 1:43PM
Minority Report and Munich were very good Spielberg movies from recent years.
But then again, I don't think even Spielberg can redeem himself after he raped Indiana Jones.
BananaBoat @ Aug 10th 2009 1:45PM
Band of Brothers is easily the greatest depiction of WWII that has ever been filmed, in my opinion at least. Earlier attempts don't come close, with very few exceptions (Saving Private Ryan being one of them). I can't wait to see what Hanks and Spielburg can do with the pacific theater.
It's set to premiere in March 2010 I believe, on HBO. Going to be epic as hell.

As if a Halo movie wasn't already a bad idea...
Now Spielberg will Crystal Skullfuck it into another Hollywood suckfest.
rruss79 @ Aug 10th 2009 12:43PM
Hello Reach is actually a good Ideal for a movie and would actually work very well for the big screen.
Spielberg pushing this forward means that the movie actually might get made instead of the crap that happen last time.
There are a lot of damn good movies Spielberg has produced but not directed. Yes, there are movies like "Transformer 2" but no one is perfect.
Dyer @ Aug 10th 2009 1:51PM
awesome photoshop.
Blank-Mage @ Aug 10th 2009 12:47PM
I'm sorry, but I can't trust Spielberg anymore. Besides, we all know he was assassinated 10 years ago and replaced by a machine from the future to crush our imaginations.
Sir Mofjell @ Aug 10th 2009 5:00PM
Yeah! So did Michael Jackson when he turned from human to moonraper! You just can't trust him anymore, espcially when you play don't drop the soap with him!
Blank-Mage @ Aug 10th 2009 5:24PM
That's like, exactly what I meant to say, only completely unrelated!
Erluti @ Aug 10th 2009 12:48PM
Love the pic!
Doug @ Aug 10th 2009 12:50PM
"Jaws," "Sugarland Express," "E.T.," "Schindler's List," "Catch Me If You Can," I'd add "A.I.", as well. It wasn't off by much. And the problems with it were, I believe, Spielberg's slavish adherence to Stanley Kubrick's script. Which was noble and loyal, but reality is - Kubrick, had he lived to direct AI, would've changed his script when he shot it to iron out the kinks.
LaughingTarget @ Aug 10th 2009 1:02PM
It wasn't that slavish. From what I heard, Kubrick's version ended when the boy was under water in front of the fairy, Spielberg added the hokey alien segment after that and effectively ruined the entire movie.
