Ben Smith, director of program management for Xbox Live, sent us an email after we expressed concern over some quotes he'd given about the Xbox 360's Netflix service. Following up, we asked Smith if Netflix was putting the kibosh on Microsoft implementing the search feature to continue driving customers to its site for that functionality. He stated that Netflix has been a great partner to work with, and that the company hasn't applied pressure to prevent a search function from being added to the Xbox version.
So, why not add the search feature into the latest update? Why emulate the video store presentation that Netflix has been hammering out of business? Smith deftly avoided the question: "We have not yet brought a full-fledged search feature to the console yet. Like many things it's an area that's interesting to us for potential future releases but we don't have anything to announce right now."
We were also curious if Netflix was cutting into the Xbox Video Marketplace, to which Smith stated that the two have "co-existed well." He notes that the different payment models and content catalogs service different types of users.
Given that Xbox 360 "power users" can access advanced functions using the Xbox Guide, we wondered if such functionality could be implemented, thus leaving casual users with the NXE functionality. Smith responded, "Our goal is to make experiences great and easy to use for all users."
Oh well, maybe with the next update we'll get lucky.

HD streams have been available on the 360 since the streaming service launched. If you go to watch instantly on netflix.com and then click on genres>HD there's a list of all the HD capable movies.

Go to netflix's site and set your preferences to HD. It should load the HD version automatically, if it's available. Most tv shows that are from the last 2 or 3 years are HD as well.

It honestly doesn't bother me that I have to go on my PC to actually search for a movie. BUt at the same time, it really doesn't make sense that they haven't added the feature.

While I like netflix, I hate that I can't use the service when I am outside the US ( because of my work, that's most of the time). Even though I have a US address, a US credit Card, linked to a Bank Of America account.
I can download movies just fine from the Apple store no matter where I am, but getting it on to my HDTV without an Apple TV is a pain in the ass.
*Sigh*

Does anyone know of a site that keeps track of what is good on Netflix instant streaming? I know Joystiq highlights one movie a week, however for the most part finding good instant streaming movies is like searching for diamonds through turds.

I personally think it's packed with goodies, but admittedly hard to find great stuff sometimes.
I've recently been enjoying Weeds, Dexter, & Jericho amongst others in the TV section.
It's a jackpot if you like documentaries; Bigger, Stronger, Faster, Confessions of a Superhero is great, Killer at Large, etc.
Depends on what you like I guess, but my instant queue is always packed. Has 78 in there right now.

Everything is an "experience" these days. Not a video, not a game. It's an EXPERIENCE!
And if some really, really obvious feature is missing, it's deliberately missing so that valued participants in the experience can fully experience the core experience.
"We have not yet brought a full-fledged search feature to the console yet"
Translation: we have not included ANY search ability whatsoever, let alone a "full-fledged" feature.

So, per the email I got from MS about the update on the 11th...
"In addition, browse through new releases and other genre lists, and add the movies or shows to your instant queue from your console."
"Find Content Faster - Browse through New Releases and other genre lists based on the types of shows you’ve previously watched, all from the comfort of your couch."
Since you can browse their available library via the the new update and add items to the queue, what am I missing on how it is gimped somehow? I mean if it's strictly limiting your ability to add to the queue from 'suggested' options, then yeah that's gimpy... Suppose it's not too big a deal anyway when you have a laptop nearby.

The genre lists only contain the top 50 movies currently renting in that genre. I'm in the preview program and I really, really, really LOVE the new Netflix service. Buuuuuuuutttt......being able to browse the entire catalog or search it would be even better.
Like I wanted to see what good classic horror movies they had on it. But since it's only the current top 50, almost everything in there is some horrible direct to DVD bore that's come out in the past couple of months.

Oh, and have been using the NXE update for about a week now. I've noticed NO speed increases in the dashboard or guide whatsoever.
It's a VERY light update if you don't use Netflix.

Avatar Marketplace, Avatar Awards, Games on Demand, a revamped achievement browser, user ratings.. It's really not all that "light," and certainly not VERY light.
(I have no idea if I had to capitalize a lot of that, but I did anyway, cause I'm a rebel)

@Psych Out
I see it as light because the core features that are important to me -- speed & media options -- aren't addressed.
Regarding the Avatar Marketplace, I see it as a negative for the platform. It will only encourage MS to nickle-and-dime paying customers. I mean, what are we really getting for our Gold subscriptions? The PSN is inferior in terms of gaming with friends, but it's also cheaper.
Re the Avatar Awards, I guess they could be cool. But they haven't done anything for the games I play yet.
Re the Achievement browser, I couldn't see any real advantage to it. It's better in the sense that you can see more achievements at any one time, but it has the disadvantage in that you have to go and move to each achievement, one at a time. It may have been better to use an achievement system like that used in Bioshock or Valve's games.
I will give them credit for smaller installs. That is a very good thing, especially for those 20GB drives out there.
But overall, the core problems of the NXE remain: speed, and a lack of video format support. (MKV, I'm looking at you.)

About the achievement browser.. are you kidding? As an achievement junkie the new achievement browser is much better because before the update you had to click each individual achievement to read its description. Add further tediousness because of the "Guide blades" lag.
I disagree about your speed comment as well. Overall, everything shows up much quicker for me. Games download lists, Guide blades basically anything that has to communicate with their servers go much faster.

I wouldn't hold out for a search feature. Just think if we had one, then we wouldn't be able to see netflix's awesome ads.

Agreed.
It's as likely that there will be a search feature as Microsoft will give us the option of hiding the Spotlight and various ads in the dashboard. i.e. nil.
