It appears that the rumors of layoffs at Stockholm-based developer GRIN are getting worse, with the company itself allegedly on the brink of collapse. Gamasutra has been informed by reliable sources that the studio has had another round of layoffs and that some employees have been told not to show up for work. Two of the company's studios have already shut down, with the main Stockholm office being the next domino.
Despite critical acclaim for Bionic Commando Rearmed, the studio saw sluggish sales and tepid reviews from big-budget titles like Terminator Salvation, Wanted: Weapons of Fate and -- the game that could really have given it a boost -- Bionic Commando. We'll update as we hear more.

It's not a clever image; that's the GRIN logo.

So... the destruction of small game companies continues then?

Maybe it's early, and maybe I'm crabby, but honestly - Grin doesn't make good video games. BC: Rearmed was fine, since it was practically a direct copy of the original, but the rest?
Terrible, terrible, terrible.
The new BC was a Meh-fest and let's not even talk about the three-hour experience of Wanted or the digital sodomization that is Terminator Salvation.
I heard the dudes from Grin on the Giant Bombcast once, and they seem cool and all - except they make shitty games. That's all that counts when it comes to keeping a studio afloat.

You know what kills me is that these guys are VERY talented. They clearly love video games and can make a compelling experience.
I don't know if the money ran out or if their were time constraints, but Wanted DID have some cleaver ideas. It was just executed horribly and bundled in a short game.

You know, I'll give you that - each one of those games had SOMETHING cool going for it. Well, maybe not Terminator; but still. It's like they would just come up with a cool idea but not work enough on EVERYTHING ELSE around it. It's like a company of talented people who really don't feel like working very hard.

Exactly! That was the sentiment I was aiming for. Exactly, talented people undone by lazy programming.

Frankly, I'm starting to think game shops are the next ".com bubble".
A videogame is not instant success. Don't buy a Ferrari when your game isn't even on the shelf yet.

What?! There's no bubble. For one, the game industry makes actual, tangible products where as the dot coms did not, which made it easy to fudge stock prices and create a bubble that was not backed by real dollars.
All this business of a handful of game studios shutting their doors is likely the result of a bad economy. In a bad economy there is less disposable income and therefore people aren't going to spend the money on the games that aren't any good.

This makes me sad. Bionic Commando wasn't exactly a masterpiece, but it was definitely fun to play.
Didn't Grin work on The Darkness as well? That was an amazing game. I could be wrong.

GRAW is probably their most famous game:

Besides BC:Rearmed which is a badass update of a classic, those other games were justifiably BAD if not HORRIBLE. Bionic Commando was just not there sadly. If they would have added more moments or enemies like the worm bosses and less of the same generic enemy over and over again it might have had a better chance. I'm not speaking about the typical soldiers either because they were okay it was just the other generic monkey like bio-suits and whatnot.

I'm usually very picky about games. Metroid Prime is my favorite game of all time (well 3D game, I won't compare it to Super Metroid). I love Nintendo's extreme polish of their first party action-adventure games. I don't like games that have questionable controls or a lot of immersion killing flaws. However, despite all this, I loved the hell out of Bionic Commando (2009). The game could have been better yes (a bit longer, better boss fights and the story either needed to be more or less serious), but it was still really fun. They really nailed the arm controls with the right balance of realism and faking it to make it fun and playable. You can do some really amazing swings with that Bionic Arm. I think this game will have some cult status in the future. Hopefully Capcom sees fit to give it another go some time.

Terminator Salvation.... What in the fuck was GRIN thinking? Easy money, that's what.
These fucks cashed in on movie games and as we all know (barring certain exceptions) MOVIE GAMES SUCK!
They were greedy, made some really really really shitty games and now they're paying the price...
If they survive this, they should really consider NOT doing movie games again and stick to being Capcoms' bitch.

It's not a matter of being greedy, you ignorant twat. It's a matter of survival as a third party.
Company X comes to you, says they want you to make Terminator Salvation, and finances your wages for a bit. fair enough, then they say has to be deved in under a year from beginning to end. Who cares, you still try your damndest to get the job done. You deliver the best product you think you can but want more time. Licenser says "fuck you, give us our game... we don't care about quality" and thus it ships. Meanwhile, gaming press goes off on the studio, not the timetable given, and bashes the hell out of the developers.
"Why can't this be as good as Wolverine, Arkham Asylum, Uncharted, or Gears of War? Stupid lzy developers." Out of all those mentioned above, dev times were OVER three years. Grin had one. One year to dev it, along with Bionic Commando and Wanted tangentally, and in a 50-60 person strong studio.
They did what they could with the time that they had. The people at Grin are INCREDIBLY talented fellows. Their problem is they had to deal with the instability of being a third party.

Wait isn't this the group who made the wanted game that trashed the Wii saying nobody ever makes their money back if they make games that aren't bratz etc... etc...
What happened why isn't Grins swimming in cash? How many developers have bit the dust now betting on a hardcore market that really only buys the big names but talks the trash of all games are appreciated?
I really can't wait to see if the same thing doesn't happen to Brutal legend. This generation is a lot like last and if psychonauts beyond good and evil and okami is any indication of "hardcore" gamers taste, I don't see Brutal legend doing well.
