Being a republican in a gay sex scandal, means A you are most likely a huge hypocrite, B you are either trying to have sex illegally in public areas or cheating on your wife.

Both these things, are really unfortunate, but kinda ironic in the end... fighting for one set of values and doing another.

It is called irony. The situation referenced is ironic because of what a hypocrite the guy was being. It isn't anything against gay republicans.

Sporge27, you are just getting downvoted because you make a whole lot of sense, and this scares people who are so eager to defend themselves because they feel uncomfortable about their behavior being called into question. If these people really didn't think there was anything wrong with what they did or what was going on, they wouldn't freak out and try desperately to defend themselves against accusations of bigotry.

You're from California, aren't you Saria.

Because that's just the kind of logic I'd expect from a citizen of that loon of a state.

No, its not. I freaking hate this argument. "Is there a white history month?" "NO< EVERY MONTH IS WHITE HISTORY MONTH!!"

Its so damn stupid. No, every month isn't white history month. Its just regular history month.

There is no straight white male campaign. And no, every other "Not gay or minority" campaign is by default the white male campaign.

Such hate for the majority.

@Crono: It has nothing to do with "hating the majority." It's just that majority doesn't need the kind of support and defense that minorities do, because it's THE MAJORITY. People from the majority don't need to fight to gain or keep rights because they already have them, because they are THE MAJORITY. Minority groups like the LGBT community don't want to take rights away from the majority and don't want hurt the majority. They just want to have rights equal to the majority. Getting all butt-hurt and scared because people are demanding to be treated equally just means you don't believe people should be treated equally. It's pretty easy to say everything is fine and nothing has to change when you are already ON THE TOP.

That's so contradictory. One second you're pushing for "support and defense" next you're touting equal rights. You remind me of those women who yell and scream about equal rights, yet become silent when anyone mentions conscription in the United States. If equality is what everyone truly wanted, why then are foundations such as the United Negro College Fund still around?

My best friend is half black, went to college together. Both applied for scholarships, both received a few, but he got a ton out of the UNCF, which I was not eligible for. (although I was his roommate, so I got to benefit from the completely paid-for apartment rent, that ruled!)

Fast forward to today, we're both technicians, making an honest living, paying for our houses, etc. The only difference? I'm still paying for student loans. That's equality, baby.

And really, I agree that gays deserve every bit of respect that anyone else gets (that includes them to stop calling me a "fucking breeder" in front of my family, thank you) but I just love how any support of the majority gets responses from people like you who seem to believe that if you're part of the majority you've got it made.

Being in the majority isn't some magical endowment, believe me. Everyone should be treated equally. And the part that so many can't seem to grasp, equal does not mean perks for some, it means equal. So why can't us straight folks have a campaign?

@Danny: It's actually pretty easy to stop using words like "retarded" and "gay." You just have to simply think before you spout things. You wouldn't *accidentally* say "n*gger" now would you?

It's not about being politically correct, it's about reducing as much harm towards other groups as you possibly can with your everyday speech and actions. There are plenty of other words to use aside from "gay" and "retarded." The people I hear who use those words seem to have a very limited vocabulary and don't sound very intelligent.

I cuss like a sailor but I try hard not to use those words that can be hurtful and target a specific type of people. You don't realize it until you are embarrassed in public or you say something in front of the wrong person.

Is it REALLY such a pain in the ass to try to be considerate of others, that you think those OTHERS should "just suck it up" instead of you attempting to improve yourself and your behavior?

I think the funnier part of that bit was the fact that it was a sex scandal, not that it was a *gay* one. I think you read into it too much. Besides, Xav and Alexander are the last people to be accusing of making fun of gay people.

Actually I went back to that joke and now I remember what it's about. The "funny" comes from the irony that a Republican, who is about "family values" and thus "protecting marriage," is involved in a SEX SCANDAL (goodbye family values) which is also GAY (goodbye protecting male/female union). Not that the Republican was, hurr hurr, gay.

Whoa, whoa, whoa, I should have EMPATHY for someone committing adultery? REALLY? Last I checked, making fun of a complete idiot and hypocrite is not a form of hate speech. Hate speech involves targeting a single person or group based on an affiliation. That senator isn't being made fun of for being gay OR being Republican. He is being made fun of for being a hypocrite.

You people are so white.

That's not a racist thing, I just mean you're unoriginal and have nothing to say, like an empty sheet of paper, which is white. It has nothing to with white *people*, so don't get offended. Besides, if white people didn't get all uppity about it there wouldn't be an issue, anyway. They're really just perpetuating the problem.

It wouldn't surprise me. The movement in psychology now is to classify pedophilia not as a mental disorder, but as a sexual orientation. Get ready for the flood of other sexual -philias to demand their "equal rights".

I wonder what the City of New York would think about a Zoophile Pride parade?

Saying that, I think penalties on sex offenders in general are getting way out of hand. Especially since a "Sex Offender" can be an 18 year old who gets caught having sex with his 16 year old girlfriend, and daddy presses charges. That kids life is officially ruined forever. Registering as a sex offender makes you a pariah for life, and while some people deserve it, there are an awful lot that don't.

I say what I want because I have the right to say it. The problem is that people are becoming more and more cowardly. The youth of America are letting the media make decisions for them (Not all of them). Look at the smoking ban that they put out. the restaurant or bar should have the right to choose not the government. this is the same situation. the lbgt is trying to enforce the not cool aspect of saying thats gay. Who cares about that group. If you want to call someone gay thats fine. People need to stop getting their feelings hurt. People be lucky you live in America where there is running water, food, shelter, and a stable economy. Thank the Lord you dont live in Africa where saying the word gay is the least of that countries problems. I dare someone to say I cant say what I want. Iam from the old school. Freedom of Speech. get a spine.

You know, I apologize for calling you an asshole. It was unwarranted, and the woman thing above was a joke btw. I just get really peeved when people say things like hate speech isn't protected speech, because repulsive as it is, all speech is protected.

The scumbags in sheets have as much a right to spew their filth and idiocy as anyone else.

When you decide a right doesn't apply to one particular person, you start down the slope of taking away any rights you don't agree with, and I can't support that.

I tried to find someone to attach this comment too, but there are too many. I probably won't get read all the way on page 9, but whatever.

Let's stop arguing that the evolution of language justifies using "gay" as an insult. Culture has changed, and mass media makes it harder and harder for words to change their meaning. Words like "lame" and "dumb" changed their meanings in a time when our words weren't written and reproduced millions of times over. As they became insults, the language adapted so that they disconnected from their original meanings, and new, non-offensive ones replaced them. Nobody calls people who can't speak "dumb", they call them "mute".

I'm not saying language doesn't change, it's just nearly impossible for a word to shed its previous meaning when that meaning is still being used. If I walked into a room and said the place was cool, it might be a little confusing. If I said it was lousy, you'd probably laugh at me for saying "lousy", but you wouldn't think it was full of lice.

So maybe you can call things gay all day without once thinking about homosexuals in a hateful, maybe your circle of friends is just as culturally evolved, but you can't honestly tell me that everyone who uses the word as an insult is as high-minded as you. It isn't the word "gay" that's the problem, it's that the whole concept of homosexuality is used to label things and people as inferior. Nearly every word that references homosexuality can be and is used as an insult.

If there are any words that have completely changed their meaning since the 90s, by all means, let me know. "Gay" is not one of them.

Little late here, but I just read these responses when I was searching my e-mail for my joystiq password.

I do not, of my own authority, condemn sodomy. God condemns sodomy. For example:

Romans 1:26-27
I Corinthians 6:9
I Timothy 1:8-11

... to name a few Bible passages that cover the topic. I also condemn it because I am faithful to Gods teachings, and also because my ability to logic and reason tells me it is unnatural and disgusting.
