Hong Kong gaming magazine GameWave is reporting that the PS3 Slim will be revealed at Gamescom next week. This comes following French media site JVN's report, which also indicated that the new model would be revealed at the European conference. The image on the magazine's cover isn't the real console, so don't get too excited. Also, thank goodness.
We'll level with you: the buzz is that the PS3 Slim will be revealed in Cologne next Tuesday at Sony's Gamescom press conference. However, with Sony remaining tight-lipped, we're still waiting for the official announcement or solid images at this point.

Thank GOD that was a fan created image. For a second I thought that was the real PS3 slim and I was about to hit my head on the keyboard.

We *know* there will be one, this time though. The Ars Technica mole said so, and he's been right about everything else so far (the bundles, the 80GB models becoming rare, and that 360 Pro model being discontinued).
Rumours are pointing towards it being a 100 Euro (and $100) price cut, but really, those are just rumours. It could be as little as $25, for all we know.

There has to be a price cut. The number one reason people aren't buying a PS3 is the price, not the design. Hyping up the slim, and not dropping the price would be a wasted effort in getting more consoles out to consumers. It will probably be 299.99, and i'll be interested to see if they announce any main system updates in the near future.

Considering they said the cost of PS3 production had gone down 70%, I would say that a price cut is a real possibility.

The thing is, Sony isn't hyping the PS3 slim. Rumors are. If you were to look at Sony's previous efforts at introducing new models, they seldom come with a price cut. Check out the PSP Go as a prime example. Often times, Sony bundles games and movies with the package, or swaps the memory/hard drive space that comes in the box. Yet price cuts come very rarely.
With all the hype the slim is getting, how much do you want to bet that Sony will keep the price right where it is. There may be a fire-sale on the older models, but Sony is interested in recovering several years of financial losses the PS3 has brought them.

Different with handhelds, though. People see a smaller handheld as something valuable in and of itself, whereas a smaller home console only has small (or no) value to the market at large (why else would the compact GameCube be beaten by the VCR-sized Xbox?). Sony needs something bigger than "it's littler!" to sell PS3 Slim, but "it's littler!" is much more compelling when trying to sell PSP Go

My assumption that there'll be a price cut is based on what the Ars Technica mole said, who has been 100% right about everything else so far.
(Again, he predicted: excellent bundles, 80GB version stock restraint, and the 360 Pro being replaced by the 360 Elite; all of these ended up coming true.)
If he's been right about everything else so far, I think it's fair enough to assume that he's right about the price cut also.
But whatever, we'll find out in less then a week.

The PSPGo is a different scenario. They can sell it at a premium because it's drastically different than the PSP 3000. With the PS3, anyone who has a normal PS3 will be able to do exactly the same things as slim owners (i assume, but i can't see it function any differently).
The current PS3 models bundling MGS4 & Killzone 2 is a desperate attempt to keep the system selling without dropping the price. That's $90 of two excellent and popular games that they lose the opportunity to sell at retail and make money off of. Sony makes most of their profit off of the games, not the consoles. I don't know how much it is to manufacture the PS3's, but if they can get it anywhere under their retail price, then it's a win, as long as the consumer buys games. A 50 dollar drop is insignificant, so it has to be 100, and they can only do it once, so they have to plan for the best time. And this holiday season would be the best time to do it.

how does sony have this many unreliable employees that EVERY single secret they've had in the last few months has broken street date?

Because they either get a kick secretly leaking info, or some of them have friends who drag it out of them, but that's just my guess.

The truth is, at some point you can't keep everything secret.
When you have the damn chinese snapping cell phone pics of them coming off the assembly line, and retail chain owners griping about not being able to get a hold of shipments, and then theres just the regular Sony employee who thinks he can get his 5 minutes of fame leaking information he probably was never supposed to have.
I mean look at Apple. That company sues the hell out of you then rapes and murders your family and friends after burning down your house and hanging your dog... yet they still have leaks.

I had someone from SCEA telling me that image as the real deal, but he wouldnt back up his source so I'm guessing you guys are correct on this one. Blessing in disguise. I posted this to ATP on Facebook and my users weren't exactly chuffed about the design either.
Much obliged on the Kudos.

No, there's no leaked shots, otherwise they'd be in the public domain by now. Especially considering how bad SCEA and SCEI are at keeping secrets.

There have been two collections of leaked shots, and a video.
The first set showed the different components at a manufacturing plant. http://www.joystiq.com/2009/05/14/rumor-pictures-show-slim-ps3-model-in-production/
The second set (plus the video) was of a Slim that had somehow found its way into a dodgy looking market. (Presumably stolen off the back of a truck, or something.) http://www.joystiq.com/2009/07/13/slim-shot-suspect-ps3-redesign-captured-in-philippines/

You sure it's not? Because I know that a couple of industry insiders have confirmed it on GAF.
And the fact that it looks identical in two completely different sources of photos kindda backs it up.
Oh, and there's the fact that the leaked box art looks almost identical to the PSP Go's boxart, which was revealed about a week after the Slim photos leaked. http://www.joystiq.com/2009/05/30/rumored-psp-go-box-bares-striking-resemblance-to-rumored-slim-ps/
But still, in a week's time we'll know for sure whether it is or isn't. =)

I'm hoping Sony announces a few other things too. For example, they are yet to tell us about the PSP Go's UMD amnesty or whatever they're going to set up for people to swap their disc games to digital.
To be honest, unless the new PS3 has some serious hardware advantages (and let's face it, it won't), then I'm more keen to hear news of the PSP Go.

Better yet. Have Sony announce the PS3 Slim and have it be more expensive like they just did to the PSP/PSP Go. That would be hysterical.
Honestly, they need a price drop and $25 or $50 is not it. It needs to be $100 so it will be priced the same as what the 360 Elite will be dropping to which is $299 with the 360 Pros going away.

Depending on the design I might consider replacing my original PS3 with a new slim one. My main concern would be if it is more quiet than my current one, as the fan noise has increased over the years, even with my best effort of frequently cleaning it with compressed air etc.
I don't care to much about the PS2 support of my current box, but another thing that might hold back from doing a switch would be if the slim only got 2 USB ports and no memory card readers like the current 'fat' models.

True. But then, if the $100 price cut for the PS3 is true, that isn't such a big deal.
It'd be a $200 120GB PS3 versus a $200 120GB 360.
That's still a win for Sony, I'd say, given that there's usually a large price gap between the two consoles.
(But then, I doubt the PS3 is getting such a large price cut. Still, I'm very possibly wrong.)
