Trophy hunters now have a valuable new resource to use in their quest to increase their PS3 XP. The Trophies functionality of the official US PlayStation site will be expanded this week to include features currently available on the European site. The most significant addition is a live-updated Portable ID which allows gamers to proudly display their PlayStation level and number of Trophies. The compact image can be embedded on almost any website and will be updated automatically with data from the PSN. Those that have been manually adding Trophy data to third-party websites can now take it easy.
Additionally, players will now be able to compare Trophies with other PSN IDs on PlayStation.com. Players will be able to track progress to the next level against friends, making Trophy-hunting more of a competitive game. And finally, new sorting features will make browsing a Trophy list much easier than before, making it even more clear what players must do to get the always-elusive Platinum Trophy.
This is awesome. I would like a reward system though. Like, I could get exclusive stuff from the PS Store or something. It would be amazing if trophies counted as money on the PS Store. EVERYONE would try to get trophies if they did that. I have 4 platinums and almost got another for Dead Space, but im barely i a level 7 :(
The trophy system is great, I missed achievements after moving from a 360 to a PS3. I know they're pointless, but I still feel good after earning one. I'm currently level 9, about 50% i think. 1 platinum, LittleBigPlanet. I hope to have a couple more in a few weeks (Dead Space, Tiger Woods 10 and Fallout 3).
John C is correct. This is one more thing that makes PSN online experience a joke.
Live has a worldwide identity but PSN doesn't even look the same or have the same basic interface.
The US portable ID was pathetic at launch and that was over a year after the console arrived and instead of updating the design simultaneously worldwide it's completely uncoordinated mess - a bit here, a different bit there ... That's why a lot of users jump ship and use the UK site to get their ID.
This isn't third party worldwide content restrictions we are talking about here, this is the basic functionality of the gaming experience. And Sony still don't get it.
really, that's the best counter argument you can come up with?
The PSN identity is a total shambles with little communication between divisions. It's taken this long for Sony to catch up to just the basic features of Live and their business plan is still lacking. And even after this update it's still not consistent. The Euro ID is still vastly superior to the boring US version.
If you don't realize how important having a cohesive network identity is to both users and business then you obviously have no idea what you are talking about.
People will happily fork over $50 for Live but if Sony attempted that they would be laughed out of the schoolyard. The online is a mess of pieces and ideas and if you don't accept that then read the PS blog. You can watch the users shouting for basic and obvious functionality for the past two years.
Sony need to overhaul the entire PSN system worldwide. This is just adding something that should have been there since day one.
No I don't see what you did there. Are you referring to the hardware or software?
The guys designing the hardware did a great job. The guys at Sony designing the launch software (which is what we are talking about here) did a piss poor job. The PS3 shipped with a basic XMB, almost no social gaming support, no in-game XMB, no trophies, no store etc. etc. and still to this day as shown by SOCOM, LBP, and Fat Princess the network is just as likely to fuck up completely as Live does.
So busy designing a reliable launch system? If you don't actually put that much in and make the software about as complex as your standard Sony TV menu then yeah, because it's not that difficult.
arkweld let me ask you a question and don't worry I won't attack you at all and call you a fanboy because you actually bring a valid point whether people like it or not, what you speak of still has some truths to it.
Now me, I don't own a 360, I don't need one. I do own Gears of War and Mass Effect and exclusive games, because my younger brother owns a 360 and so I play the 360 exclusives on it.
That being said, yes I am a huge huge Playstation fanboy, not an annoying fanboy like "Oh I hate the 360.." just more that I appreciate the overall gaming experiance I get on my PS3 more then I do on a 360 or a Wii. I'm a big time lover of exclusives and I just personally prefer the PS brand, the Playstation controller is more comfortable to me.
That being said, yes the XBL does have a more refined, online service. I think the Party System is cool, the way you can send voice messaging is cool and just it's just more well put together. Now it doesn't mean I dislike the PSN, I personally prefer the Trophy system. Now I grew up playing videogames in the 90's, so grew up with the original PS, SNES, N64, Saturn, Dreamcast, etc etc. Now back then, gamers played just to play games, we didn't care so much for an Online community, but now it's become more of a norm.
This is where the point I'm going to get to, is a Party System, playing games while listening to your music on the same hardware, is that REALLY REALLY worth 50%? Now we all know that Sony has already been in talks of upgrading the PSN to allow Party System, and even some games already you can play the music that's in your PS3, hell you can even connect an iPod and play those songs from that iPod inside these specific games. However; once this Party System and playing music on your hardware with any games, once this becomes a norm on the PSN, and the PSN would still be FREE.
What else would you be able to say?
Lest not forget that, people personally would rather have a good gaming experiance, a good exclusive, then any fancy online software. It's what a videogame console is for. The PS2, sure it did have DVD but the PS2 was primarily a gaming console, the PS played CD ROMS but it was a gaming console. PS3 has a beautiful blu-ray player AND you can go webrowsing so you can go on Youtube, Twitter, FaceBook, and plenty of movie sites to download free movies on your PS3. However; most people use it for gaming.
Once everything that's on XBL becomes a normal staple on the PSN. Is that 50$ pricetag going to look so attractive?
Sorry for the length of my post, just had to get an intelligent point across.
While we are talking about adding basic functionality how about this list:
*Ignore User button *Ability to post Pictures & Videos in the contents of a post *Make hyperlinks instead of having to post the entire link *Edit Button *Signature *Ability to reply to a reply *One time Master log in for posting comments *More profile options *Spell checker *Bold, Italic and Underline text
That would be a good start to get the basic functionality most of us have come to expect from blogs.
I'm Crazy... you are vidikron... yuk yuk yuk... listen... home is hurting and having some home based incentive system via trophies could up the numbers. Collecting trophies imho is just as pointless as wandering around home for hours...im not paying to give my guy a new t-shirt in home or a new pad. But, if a platinum trophy produced a new wardrobe, dance move (lol), hamster suit, bachelor pad etc, in home. id be more likely to do it....its like a leveling up system.
This type of functionality, although small in comparison to what is already out there right now, is badly needed to keep people on the PS3. I'm glad it's here and more is to come I'm sure. Can't wait!
I'm glad that finally SONY is listening us, but what we really need is a redesign of the whole US Site. I mean, come on even the EU site has a really nice design.
I'm all about SONY but they should take a look at Xbox site it is really sleek and clean.
