How is it awful? I know we have our opinions but I personally put it as one of my favorites of them all.

I can see where you're coming from Wayne as when one things of Halo they usually think of balls to the wall action. That said I personally liked the Cole Protocol because it reminded me so much of Battlestar Galactica; in depth character development lovingly sprinkled with action/violence.

I dont see how, Karen Traavis is a great sci fi writer whose down tons of Star wars books, Eric and Tobias wrote other Halo books as well. It's not like they're whoring it out to James Patterson or something

Hmm, Halo short stories eh? That appeals a lot more to me than a whole Halo novel.

You're missing out on an enjoyable experience if you give Fall of Reach a pass.

I'll only pick this up if they finally decide to clear up that cliff hanger at the end of Ghosts of Onyx.

I think the only way we'll ever find that out is either a Halo movie or Halo 4

Just curious, are these novels/short stories actually good? And I don't mean, "Well it's good for an adaptation of a video game..." I mean, does it stand up to good sci-fi fiction standards? I always assume any book adaptation of a franchise will be crappy, but maybe I'm wrong.

As a frequent reader of Sci Fi books they're some of my favorites with the exception of the Cole Protocol, and Karen Travis writes some of the best Star wars novels so im sure hers will be good

I personally liked all the books (I don't get the Cole Protocol hate, to each his own) as sci-fi books and as stories told within the Halo universe. It's not Isaac Asimov but it's still great reading.

The Ghosts of Onyx and The Fall of Reach are both fantastic. First Strike is also pretty darn good.

All are good except THE FLOOD. which reads like a strategy guide for halo 1.

Most written adaptations of video games that I've read have been lackluster.

Conversely, I've loved every single book the Halo series -- and the Gears of War books written by Traviss are almost as good.

For sci-fi in general, I'd say these books are surprisingly good. I recommend checking them out.

Just skip "The Flood." As Tiptup300 said, it's like somebody was playing the first Halo game and keeping a journal the whole time. Bore.

I should check them out, then. I don't play Halo 'cause I could never get into it (*GASP*) but I'm always up for good sci-fi. And maybe the books will in turn make me want to play Halo. I'll be working backwards!

Or working it forward, depending on how you do it. All of the books occur before Halo 2. They definitely inspired me to play the games just to get the rest of the story. There's a lot of the Halo universe that you don't get by playing just the games.

if you want a summary of the flood here it goes "Master Chief slapped another magazine into his MA5B" Only they have a couple different view points, so replace MC with Major Silva, some lady, an elite, a grunt and then MA5B with whatever. Pretty lackluster but still entertaining

I tend to like pulp sci-fi/fantasy as a general rule, so I really liked Fall of Reach and First Strike. They're not on the level of, say, The Diamond Age, but they're damn good in their own right. It's mostly because of Bungie's excellent worldcrafting and having a tight relationship with the writers.

I haven't had a chance to get around to anything past First Strike, though, so I can't say much of anything about Cole Protocol.

Eric Nylund AND Karen Traviss? Oh hell yes, I am getting this.

Each one of Nylund's contributions to the Halo novel series and Karen Traviss' "GoW: Aspho Fields" are great reads. They're not written in that horrible, shallow, stream-of-consciousness style like so many game-related books (Doom novels from the '90s, I'm looking at you.)
