The PC Gaming Alliance, a non-profit initiative established to preserve and promote the PC Gaming industry, recently added a bevy of heavy hitters to its ranks. Eight more companies have signed on to lend their support to the cause, including GameStop, GameTap, Gas Powered Games, BFG Technologies, Bigfoot Networks, Flextronics, Howie's Game Shack and InstantAction.
We support the notion of this group enrolling new members -- but we're curious why GameStop has agreed to lend its massive, wealthy hand. Has the unrivaled gaming retailer finally figured out how to purchase and resell used PC titles?

Would be interesting if they could start buying used PC games. I don't remember exactly why, but there's some sort of verification code or something, and they don't accept it. I don't buy PC games very often so I wouldn't really know.
Only PC game I ever tried to return was Age of Empires 3, it's my favorite PC game but back when I tried to return it, I'd bought it without knowing if my PC could run it, and it couldn't. =/

CD keys and copy protection workarounds are the primary cause of most retailers not accepting opened PC games.

It's affective with online games, requiring you to buy the game if you choose to play online.

GameStop joining the PCGA; does that mean there will be more than some single obligatory shelf somewhere off out of direct line-of-sight or in a corner? Perhaps it means that all GameStop's will carry PC titles now (some do not). I doubt that highly, but this is all mere speculation.
Target and Wal-Mart have stronger PC sections than GameStop...
I'm sorry, I just think the PCGA is a joke.
Epic Games refused to release Gears of War 2 to PC due to "Piracy Concerns" (Which probably lost them one hell of a possible profit margin, but that's just my opinion).
WildTangent is one of the largest single sources of malware I've ever seen.
As for Microsoft and, more so, Sony DADC: Self-Explanatory.

I agree. All the gamestop's I've been to (5 or so) all do the same. Off in the back, in some run-down, so-called "shelf" are a bunch of boxes shoved into it half-assed and in any direction it was when they grabbed it, and most likely they are ripped up and open. Most likely the shelf isn't even filled halfway.

Took the words right ot of my mouth.
I find it funny that they've joined this "alliance" considering there's a lot of GameStops/EBGames' (at least out my way) that don't even carry PC games or, as you put it, keep them on a single shelf in a corner, facing the back of the store where no one can ever find them.

I would definitely purchase a copy of Gears 2 for the PC and it wouldn't cost Epic that much to port it to the PC, even with all the piracy on the platform, they would still make a profit, damn you CliffyB, the maker of Jazz Jackrabbit, you used to be cool! >: (

Gamestop is probably joining to promote their new(?) digital download service.
I'm not concerned about the reasons though, just so long as people still support the Greatest Platform™.

Gamestop needs to put out a good reason why they would join that.

I'd like to see them (gamestop) buy and sell used pc parts for cheaper.. not so much games. Its not like it would be hard for them to test parts before accepting them. This would make pc upgrading work extremely nice as well.. need a graphics card? no problem, take your old one down to game stop trade it in for store credit, choose a better new or used one and pay the difference.
some times it would be nice to run to the store and grab a cheap used agp card for that older back up rig so your friend can play at the lan with you next week if ya get what i mean..
some times a kid just needs a quick stick of ram but doesnt have the money to shell out for one of best buys over priced junk ram.
I'd honestly love to see this.. I might actually start shopping there.

Funny, I recently saw Gamestop.com selling a used Asus gaming laptop, a sign of things to come or some employee loading off his grimy laptop?

Its kind of strange that almost everyone who joins the PC gaming alliance are the ones that are killing it.
Gamestop and similar stores don't stock any PC games, hide them, don't have good trade in or returns policies, etc... that's why everyone has switched to online services.
Microsoft seems to be on a quest to kill PC gaming.
I guess at least instantaction and gametap are TRYING... though i must confess both have fallen off my radar recently.
INDIE developers are keeping the PC interesting and viable as a platform... frankly i rarely buy "mainstream" PC games anymore (and they are often just console ports anyway), but there is an enormous hidden wealth of awesome indie games out there.

Honestly? Why would you want to by used PC hardware when newegg.com constantly has sales? Obviously, most of the people replying to this are console gamers because you don't have a clue what you are talking about.

Best line of the article. Gamestop probably wants to promote their digital downloads, so they it can compare with Steam, but if they get intel on selling used PC games...they could possibly take over the world.

What a fucking joke that Gamestop is part of this. All you need to do is realize that to know the whole thing is a scam of some sort. Gamestop has been counting on and doing everything it can to initiate the fall of PC gaming because they can't resell PC games so the profit margins are lower.
I'm still holding strong on my Gamestop boycott and proud of it.

Don't blame you. But, I do think Steam is capable of saving PC gaming. Sounds absurd, but it has the greatest anti-torrent features, and always has great prices and games.

Maybe the alliance can help reverse the Epic Fail that Microsoft created with the Games for Windows initiative. Now that we've caught up hardware-wise to the game requirements, there's almost nothing to play on them.
Here's a business plan: Give away the game discs FREE/cheap but crippled, then sell or rent the unlock/uncripple through Steam. It would give the retailers (and renters) a revenue stream.
