One thing is obvious after playing the closely-guarded story mode of The Beatles: Rock Band: this is no quick cash-in. The rewards system included in the game features some extraordinary (and oftentimes exclusive) extras that no Beatles fan will want to miss. Rare archival photos, audio and video chronicle the meteoric rise of the Beatles, providing an almost-encyclopedic document of the band's career.
Unlike the previous Rock Band games, the entire setlist will be available from the get-go in The Beatles: Rock Band. Considering the mainstream appeal of the Beatles, Harmonix realized it was foolish to lock away the core content of the game from the masses. Instead, the story mode provides something sorely missing from the first two Rock Band games: context. The tour mode of the previous titles attempted to emulate the experience of being a band on the rise, but did so through a simple numeric representation of how many fans players have accumulated. The Beatles offers cutscenes, both rendered in the game's engine and through animation, that begin inside one of the band's earliest venues: The Cavern Club.
Players will have to play through a number of pre-selected songs in order to progress onto the next part of the story, visiting venues such as the set of the Ed Sullivan Show, Budokan, Shea Stadium, and the rooftop of Apple Records. Those who manage to get 5-star ratings on all the songs will unlock a number of extras, such as photos that chronicle the history of the Beatles. These images include intimate details fact-checked by Paul McCartney himself.
The rewards system encourages mastery, but is still accessible to casual players. The 5-star ratings can be achieved on any difficulty: Expert or Beginner. Hardcore gamers looking for an even deeper challenge will appreciate the game's Achievements/Trophies, which will be as eclectic as the ones found in Rock Band 2. The Beatles improves the experience by taking a page from Valve, by offering an overview page that details each achievement's criteria, and marks player's progress on each. (For example, if an achievement requires getting a gold star 5 times, you will see how many you have already acquired.)
In addition to photos and behind-the-scenes commentary from the Beatles, there are a few hidden treats that will be available for the first time through The Beatles: Rock Band. Harmonix showed us one of the bonuses: a complete recording of a Christmas vinyl album distributed to early The Beatles Fan Club members. Limited to a small handful, this is the first time the recording has been digitized and made available to the wider public. For fans of The Beatles that weren't alive when the band first formed, this is a rare treat.
The improved story mode and rewards system really makes The Beatles: Rock Band a treat for fans. It's true the core gameplay hasn't been revolutionized, but the new story mode, addition of three-part harmonies, and far more rewarding achievements make The Beatles a worthwhile upgrade to the franchise. It's clear that although The Beatles: Rock Band focuses on simply one band, these features evolve the Rock Band experience even beyond Rock Band 2. September 9th can't come soon enough.

I got to see Pete Best play once in Liverpool, that guy was a trip. They actually had another drummer on the same stage cause he was THAT shitty of a drummer.

Isn't getting to hear a vinyl that was extremely rare and limited for the first time ever compensation enough for not having the other albums (you can probably find on iTunes) in game?
Because unless you have that vinyl, I think it's a pretty good trade off.

Actually, Jack Hollow, you can't find The Beatles on iTunes. This game will be the first time you can legitimately attain any Beatles songs by digital download.

Ok your correct, my bad it's the digital re mastering of there albums being released on CD. I assumed it was going to be on Itunes as well.

No a rare vinyl is not enough. My problem with the way they've been doing the downloaded albums is I've heard more about what isn't going to be on the disk when it comes out than what actually is.. Rock Band 2 came with some 80 songs.. thats worth the cash to me.. The Beatles Rock Band needs to have a substantial playlist on the disk, and if it doesn't I'm not sure how much i want to buy it just for the sake of playing beatles songs.
The whole story mode idea has me intrigued and its making the game more worth it to me. I was really excited hearing the idea of Beatles Rock Band at first... but then every press release since except maybe this one, has been a downer... Considering very popular albums won't be in the game at release... The fact that you can only play the beatles music in the beatles rock band... (which really sucks by the way, because I don't want to swap disks at a party because all the sudden we want a variety outside the beatles).. and the lack of a confirmed launch setlist....

I don't think you quite understand how albums work with the RB franchise. Just because an album is coming as DLC doesn't mean songs from it aren't going to be on disc.
In fact, it's already confirmed that songs from Abbey Road, Rubber Soul, and Sgt. Pepper are coming on-disc. This includes "Here Comes the Sun", "Octopus's Garden", "Come Together", "Drive My Car", "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds", and others. The DLC packs simply "complete" the album with whatever songs aren't on disc.
It's no different than traditional album downloads such as Doolittle, The Colour and the Shape, and Ten...which joined with songs already on the RB discs ("Wave of Mutilation", "Everlong", and "Alive" respectively)

You've got to understand as well that the Beatles discography is...well...the Beatles discography. It's not getting any bigger, and if they gave you every last song on the original disc, they wouldn't be able to sell you DLC. If you were to assign a 1 dollar value to each song (theoretical Itunes price), you still wouldn't get every last song for the price of the game, and that is without assigning a value to the instruments.
It's also worth noting that The Beatles discography isn't entirely owned by Apple Corp (not the computer maker) and that some of it is actually owned by (last I heard) a joint venture between Sony and Michael Jackson (his estate now, obviously). I haven't heard anything about whether or not Sony is allowing usage of their Beatles songs or not, so there may be songs that will never come to The Beatles Rock Band.
As for rare vinyls, I hope the digital transfer was done properly. I've heard some incredible digital transfers of old (rare) Beatles records, and I'd love to have even more rare or unreleased material that has been properly transferred.

Beginner difficulty? Did you mean "Easy" or did Harmonix add a new Beginner mode a`la Guitar Hero?

Now THAT is how you incorporate a famous band into a game for the fans.
I cannot wait for this. For huge fans, like myself, it's sounding more like an actual experience than a game.

I have to make do with what I got. Believe me, I'll be first in line when The Beach Boys get their own game. And don't even mention an Elvis game. I've been waiting my whole life for that.

Did I miss the announcement where Joystiq said they'd be covering rhythm game news in place of other news? Do they have a daily limit on news posts or something?
Better tell the guy who posted the Welsh game news that he's dangerously close to going over, and once you get outside of your plan those extra posts costs $200 per pixel!

Please read past the next line.
I hate The Beatles.
Getting that out of the way, I'll be picking this game up. I have come to like a great number of bands that I either did not before or had not heard of before, through Rock Band. So I'll give them $60 to show me why I should enjoy their music, since I certainly don't understand their legacy or mass appeal.
Say what you will, September is going to be an amazing month for those of us that love these types of games.

Concur on your points. I like the Beatles, but there are some of their songs I don't enjoy, so I'll play them once or twice as required by the story, and that it.
And I'll be the first to admit that Rock Band has changed my attitude about Nirvana. I do not like the song "Smells Like Teen Spirit." Hate on me if you want, but I prefer songs where the lyrics are somewhat understandable. But with the tracks on RB, I've come to enjoy some of their music. Lots of other groups I would have never listened to, I have come to enjoy.
Not an MS employee, but this is when the Zune pass comes in VERY handy. I like a RB track, so I go download the whole album. If it's good, new music discovered! If I don't enjoy it, I'm not out any money. And the Pass also allows me to easily create a fairly complete collection of tracks from the RB games and GH games, to listen to in the car or wherever to get the timing and rhythm down. Here's hoping that the Beatles will also appear in the Zune Marketplace.
