Its pretty clear to me what Sony is and will do....

The formerly $500 PS3 is now $400
The $400 PS3 is retired

The PS3 Slim will be $300

I think Sony should at least give you component cables with the PS3. I'm sure people get pissed off when they buy their next-gen, HD, Blu-Ray player and it only comes with composite cables.

Just a friendly note: don't pay more than a few bucks for an HDMI cable if you get a system that doesn't include one! I think I picked up two 6 ft cables for less than $10 over at monoprice.com a little while back.

Paying more to buy something bigger makes little sense, unless the PS3 Slim has reduced functionality compared to the current $499 model, which i severely doubt is the case.

Either that, or it's just to try to clearance out the stock on the non-slim models, but even then, you're selling a bigger product for more.

Quick question, is there any one from Texas who knows if Hastings delivers to other parts of the country? Thought I would just ask.

As someone who is a huge fan of multiplatform games, and a couple of 360 exclusives a ps3 just isnt worth the current price (and a blueray player came free with my tv). But if this price cut is permanent, I'll probably pick one up sooner than later for uncharted 2, that modracers game (that game looks fun as hell), and infamous.

Cut down to $400??? That's it? That's the best they can do? If they put it at $299 then I would consider buying it because I want to get Killzone 2, Uncharted 2 and God of War 3 when they come out but I can't justify spending $400 for that... I also want a Blu-Ray player but could get one for cheaper... I just don't know. They're not being very competitive!

$299 and a free game, or gift card for PSN.

Who am I kidding, I won't be buying a PS3 this year anyway. I just spent $200 on contact lenses, and am planning a trip to CA for that Silent Hill spook house.

Other versions of the PS3 has been sold at $399 before. This effectively just gives you a bigger hard drive at the existing $399 price point! How many consumers who thought $399 was too expensive for an 80GB PS3 will spend the same money on the same machine with a bigger hard drive? Games sell consoles, not hard drive size.

I had a chat with the manager at my local GameStop, and he has said that Corporate has sent them e-mails that the PS3 will drop $100 and also that the 360 Elite will drop $100 as well.

And the prices will be permanent.

The ad doesn't take effect until Sept 8th, so you will probably find it online then. But it looks like a lot of retailers will be doing the same. Hell, the PS3 slim might even be announced by then.

I'll pick up my second PS3 the moment the 80GB (PS3 Fat) hits $299 USD.

Random Question: Was the PS2 Slim harder to mod than the PS2 Fat? I'm aiming for the PS3 Fat (instead of Slim) assuming that the HDD will be easier to swap in the Fat than the Slim. Does this reasoning make sense, or am I just a k00k?

I'll get another non slim model PS3 when they drop as well...as for it being harder to mod?? ummmm just depends on your skill.....but why worry about "modding" it if all you are going to do is change the HDD. I ASSUMING they would leave that something simply considering a Slim model PS3 can be as thin as a laptop, and those are fairly simple to switch the HDD out on...

Still too expensive. Give us a 40 or 60GB HD and hit the magic $199 -- THEN we'll talk, Sony. Tired of everyone slapping on a bigger and bigger HDs to justify price hikes. Heck, sell us a bare bones system and let US put in our own HDs. Not like we can't swap yours out, already.

The only way I ponied up for a 80GB PS3 was at a $199 price point through a special offer on Sony's website. That price included a 2nd controller and the BD remote plus free shipping.

It's a decent BD player, but I still prefer my 360 for games. Neither the PS3 nor the 360 Elite are worth $400 though. A price drop is crucial.

May I make a suggestion?

In the event there's an update to a previous a post (as is the case here), I recommend pushing the story back to the top of the main Joystiq site so that readers know that there was an update to a story they may have read earlier. Had someone not replied to one of my comments on here, I would have never know about the whole cease and desist order that Joystiq was sent.

And everyone is wondering why there wasn't a price drop sooner. Because Sony knows, it really isn't going to have that great of an effect on anyone. Especially with Microsofts piece of crap dropping price. Or maybe everyone could get a job.

The other thing that makes me laugh, this guy says he's got zero interest in the PlayStation 3 until Uncharted 2 and Heavy Rain. Yet, Uncharted:Drakes Fortune essentially the same game, has been sitting on store shelves for years, and he hasn't noticed that. That's interesting. With kind of deal, why should we take him seriously?

Finally, if you all wanna live in the past, then buy a freakin Xbox 360. you can get bare bones SHIT! Let Microsoft screw you over and charge you $50 to play online and if you can't pay $50 a year which I'd better be hearing everyone say they can't do that either, or they;ve just admitted they're not as poor as they say they are and are friggin Microsoft Zombies. Or you can get up with the times and actually invest in some new technology. Otherwise, you can just live with your upconvert dvd crap, in a world that's evolving into Blu-ray technology. Your choice. This is rediculous. Sony has already dropped its price $200. I paid $500 for my 60GB and I don't regret it. It'll soon cost $300, but I'm not envious of anyone whose getting it cheaper, because I see the value in what I've got and know it was worth the $500. You think future consoles are gonna get cheaper? You're wrong. games went from $20 a pop to now $60 a pop and they'll increase $10 every generation. America's spending. They've got plenty of money. They'd just rather complain.

"games went from $20 a pop to now $60 a pop and they'll increase $10 every generation."

Games have actually become cheaper over time, when you take in to account inflation. Not to mention production values, which are now out of sight. You get FAR more bang for your buck now than you ever did. The production costs are now staggeringly high -- more than hollywood films -- yet the price has not increased accordingly.

The typical big-title game in 1982 cost just under US$35. That was a huge amount back then. It was the quality-price difference which led in great part to the Crash, leading to massive sell-offs of poor-quality games.

The PS3 is way overpriced relative to its competition. Fanboys, you do not get it: nobody cares about twisted-logic sales arguments. The simple fact is that people are not buying the PS3 in large enough numbers, meaning that PS3 developers suffer, Sony suffers through a lack of software, DLC & peripherals sales, and ultimately, gamers suffer.

So, PS3 fanboys, how about you quit being rabid idiots about the freaking 360 for once, and do what everyone else is doing: tell Sony that they need to drop the price of the PS3 and build marketshare.

The price drop is real...

Several stores here in Portugal already have the PS3 at 299€ (from the previous 399€).

I just find it unbelievable that some companies still try to dismiss this as rumor, or falsity.

The PS3 price has already come down... now, lets see what the slim has in store! (it must be good, otherwise they wouldn't start droping the price prior to Sony's announcement)
