Impressions: Alpha Protocol

I would be upset by Mass Effect 2's 2010 release were it not for Obsidian's upcoming "espionage RPG." The core mechanics of BioWare's space opera are here: shooter controls, experience points, specialized skills and branching dialogue trees with a strong emphasis on player choices. In a world about traitorous spies, these choices will certainly keep you on your toes.
The many developer diaries released by Obsidian certainly took away some of the surprise of seeing Alpha Protocol in action. At the very least, I was relieved to see that the game simply works, and most importantly: looks like a lot of fun. For those that choose to go guns blazing, the many abilities you can acquire make the combat ridiculously fun. Depending on what players spend their experience points on, players will have access to a number of different abilities. Some of the skills I saw: a radar to highlight enemies (and allies), a rapid lock-on ability, bullet-time, and increased stealth -- helpful for when you want to sneak up behind someone and snap their neck.
Gallery: Alpha Protocol

These abilities are useful, but there's no way to create a fully maxed-out character in Alpha Protocol. At least, not on one playthrough. (A "New Game+" option is available when playing at the hardest difficulty.) Players will have to choose their abilities wisely. Will you spend your points in conversation, or will you spend them in combat, or will you choose stealth -- opting to avoid combat altogether? The character system really emphasizes how important player choice is in the world of Alpha Protocol.
You may already be familiar with this scenario: a mercenary named Sie holds you at gunpoint. You can attempt to befriend her, get the trust of her allies, and gain help through the subsequent level. If you choose that route, you'll still have to watch out. If you don't have the radar ability equipped, you won't be able to distinguish friend from foe. Attacking one of Sie's men will obviously have its consequences.

Choices are given to the player outside of scripted dialogue sequences. For example, in the level I saw, players were given the choice to destroy or smuggle a weapons cache they discovered. Both will have consequences -- some which the player may not see. For example, what will the player do with the weapons once they're acquired? Sell them? To whom?
Players will have to carefully manage their allegiances to make the most out of the Alpha Protocol experience. Sie is not only a valuable ally in battle, but she can also provide players access to an expanded arsenal of weapons. Money is a vital part of the player experience, and like in real life, having a lot makes everything a whole lot easier. Everything costs money, from the weapons to the ammo to the armor. Having the best quality stuff will certainly cost a pretty penny. Perhaps I'll attempt to seduce Sie and get a discount. She's but one of four women you can sleep with -- and yes, you can sleep with all four in one playthrough. (You'll even get an Achievement for it!)

All in all, I have to say I'm impressed with what I've seen of Alpha Protocol. The gunplay looks incredibly fun, and the character customization options offer impressive depth. There's a real sense of consequence to the choices players make, whether through in-game actions or dialogue sequences. An attractive world of espionage, coupled with Obsidian's attention to detail, have put Alpha Protocol on the shortlist of games I really want this holiday season.

The real question is: Can I sleep with all 4 women at once?

Achievement Unlocked: The Hugh Hefner sleepover party: 69 points
Look At This Suit @ Aug 14th 2009 10:53PM
Better make it 70. I don't need another odd numbered achievement like that screwin' up my gamerscore.
DBuck_Eye @ Aug 14th 2009 10:56PM
Boy, you totally missed that one.
nriveraexpress @ Aug 14th 2009 11:08PM
lol he sure did! wow
WINterfang @ Aug 15th 2009 12:36AM
That's because 69 is not joke, is a way of life.
Dan @ Aug 15th 2009 1:31AM
LOL! you both (Dbuck + Nrivera) missed the point... 70 is when you finger while 69ing.. n00bs :P

You win at beating a dead horse.
calgaryalta @ Aug 15th 2009 12:53PM
beating a dead horse is a 71.
Jampirow @ Aug 15th 2009 8:29PM
I'm afraid to ask what 72 is.

Who needs Mass Effect 2? Me, that's who.
Richards | PSN: F4WMR @ Aug 14th 2009 10:16PM
As a PS3 owner, I pray ME2 comes to my console. But in the event it does not, I suppose AP will have to be a an alternative >.
Shadowbender ( Sweatshop Supporter In Hiding) @ Aug 14th 2009 10:25PM
Yeah, it should be a pretty good alternative.
Rocket Raccoon @ Aug 14th 2009 10:44PM
This was exactly my response.
I do, however, really want to play this game.
SpyderTaco (PSN: Ar4chNova89) @ Aug 15th 2009 2:13AM
What the hell is the point in voting down Richards?
All he said is he hopes a great game comes to his console of choice.
Bunch of prima donnas running the show tonight.
SpyderTaco (PSN: Ar4chNova89) @ Aug 14th 2009 10:11PM
Comparisons to games like Mass Effect 2 will be the death of this game, which is a real shame. Not sure how people can be so put off by something just because it's "like this, but it's not". I mean, hasn't the Halo series always been "like this, but not"?
No worries, I'll still be picking it up at launch.
ecliptor_knight @ Aug 14th 2009 10:14PM
I'll stick with ME and ME 2 not some generic and poorly made knock-off.
SpyderTaco (PSN: Ar4chNova89) @ Aug 14th 2009 10:20PM
Oh, so you've played it?
Awesome! So you can write out a 5-page review and give me a score out of 100. Each /10 contributing to a specific part of the game (ex. graphics, sound, gameplay mechanics, story, etc).
Either that or you're just pulling all of this out of your ass and have absolutely nothing good to say about the game even if you have no idea what it is. You skim through 2 screenshots on an article someone took time to type and STILL have nothing good to say.
Well, I for one wish I could be as blind as you. Then maybe I wouldn't be stupid enough to buy games like Uncharted 2. When will I learn?
CH3BURASHKA @ Aug 14th 2009 10:40PM
Wait, you have news on Mirror's Edge 2? Spill it, girlfriend!
Lord Maim @ Aug 15th 2009 10:57AM
Actually, I'm going to be stupid enough to buy Uncharted 2 and Mass Effect 2, since they're both going to be awesome.
I'm starting to get interested in AP but the original movies I saw of it had some primitive looking graphics and animations. I'm hoping that the final build addresses that, because the other aspects of the story interaction and decision making really sound like they'll make it an interesting game.
Bravo6 @ Aug 14th 2009 10:15PM
A definite buy for me.

This game has actually been on the top of my list for this holiday season. It's nice to read some pub for this game. It almost seemed like outlets were choosing to ignore it and focus on what ISN'T getting released this year.
Good job 'Stiq, keep it up.
fundando @ Aug 15th 2009 11:30AM
This is one of the reasons my game budget from now until the end of the year is $452.49. Hopefully I can convince somebody to buy me this for my birthday.
Filthy Assistant @ Aug 14th 2009 10:21PM
I really can't figure out if this looks good or not. It SHOULD, since it's more or less Mass Effect in a spy setting rather than sci-fi, but all the videos I've seen of gameplay looked absolutely awful. Then again, all of the press seems to be positive about it. I'll rent it.
prence @ Aug 14th 2009 10:28PM
Impressed by the gunplay you've SEEN. Let's hope that it actually works as well as it looks like it does.
Charlie_Six @ Aug 14th 2009 10:37PM
Woah, I had assumed Obsidian would let me down like they did with NWN2. I was too quick to prejudge.
Can't wait to try this now!
CH3BURASHKA @ Aug 14th 2009 10:41PM
I will get this... someday... when I get a console.
BTW: New Zune HD: 290 bucks (Sept 22). Xbox price drop (soon, maybe?) PS3 Slim along with a price drop (300 bucks, GC?). I'M NOT MADE OF MONEY DAMNIT!
Shadowbender ( Sweatshop Supporter In Hiding) @ Aug 14th 2009 11:55PM
Need some help on choosing a console. Don't worry, I'm not biased.
lilduderpimp @ Aug 14th 2009 11:32PM
I certainly read alot of "looks" and not "is".
Maccadude33 @ Aug 14th 2009 11:45PM
For all of KotOR 2's flaws, I still enjoyed the game immensely. The infinite Hssiss glitch in the tomb on Korriban was ridiculously fun, although my Xbox crashed constantly because of it.
I hope people will appreciate this game. It should be good. After all, Bioware started KotOR, and Obsidian made its sequel, both of which were fantastic games, even with some of their faults. Then Bioware released ME, which was simply amazing, despite much of the game's secondary missions being a bit repetitive. This looks to borrow some of what made ME so good and yet will improve upon it in a different way, just as they upgraded the interface and gameplay in KotOR 2. And surely ME2 will blow all of its precedents away. I plan on picking this up to tide me over until ME2. Obsidian has some talent and it looks like they did a great job. Can't wait for either of the games.

Did you guys actually played the game? or saw somebody play it?
Ryan @ Aug 15th 2009 12:57AM
This game=Win.
Emperor_Den_Den @ Aug 15th 2009 1:00AM
Man this game will probably show us what the new fallout will be like. I know obsidian was some what weary of how bethesda changed there game up but it took the game into next gen the correct way. Lets hope this game does well because I believe it may very well show the mechanis of Fallout new vegas.
smcn @ Aug 15th 2009 2:48AM
Unless we all get teleported to a different dimension where NV won't use the SPECIAL system, it will be absolutely nothing like Alpha Protocol.
dronesensor @ Aug 15th 2009 2:57AM
Wait, what? Obsidian didn't develop the original Fallout games, dude. Unless I'm totally misreading your comment.
The Dark Wayne @ Aug 15th 2009 3:02AM
Bethesda said New Vegas will be done with the fallout engine and i would assume in the same manner, so probably not
Pimliconite @ Aug 15th 2009 6:16PM
@dronesensor They developed Fallout 2 when they were Black Isle. A few of them worked on Fallout 1. The lead dev of AP was the lead dev of the cancelled Fallout 3 (Van Buren).
And now they're making Fallout: New Vegas.
Popfrogs @ Aug 15th 2009 9:08PM
"Bethesda said New Vegas will be done with the fallout engine"
Crap, I sure hope not. That engine looks old tyme compared to Killzone2 and Uncharted2. Bethesda needs to quit milking their old engine and upgrade. Character animations are lolworthy and they depend heavily on fog to keep the framerate barely above 30.
Discotheque @ Aug 15th 2009 1:13AM
I'm torn between this and Borderlands. I think I'll get this since I'll end up buying Borderlands later when I build a new PC in December (along wit Dragon Age).
It's too bad this game gets such little attention. Is it the really generic box-art or something? Because people should be excited about this game. Obsidian is second to Bioware in WRPGs (Bethesda is good....but they can't really write a story to save their lives) and nobody has done an espionage-RPG to this extent before. I'm really excited with the future "spy" has in gaming. From Rockstar's Agent to Sony's The Agency to this.
The Dark Wayne @ Aug 15th 2009 2:51AM
the holidays are definitely not the most interesting aspect, please learn what words mean before you spam like you read the posts
MaliceMajorE15 @ Aug 15th 2009 4:59AM
my real question is, is there a need for them to blank out the buttons in the above pictures?
the only reason i can think of is that the 3 versions must be noticibly different from each other graphically.
Tristax @ Aug 15th 2009 4:52PM
Your attention to detail is impressive.
I didn't even notice.
Popfrogs @ Aug 15th 2009 9:09PM
Well, there will be the glossy lozenge buttons for Xbox and the x o triangle square for ps3, so it makes sense that at this stage the buttons would look "anonymous" for choices.
MaliceMajorE15 @ Aug 15th 2009 9:42PM
other multiformat games like mordern warfare for example havent felt the need to edit out the buttons on their screens. this eans that it was done purposefully but to what end. you cant say its cos of the stage of development its at because its arriving soon plus they havent bothered to censor the developers diaries
t_m @ Aug 15th 2009 5:21AM
Care to comment on the level of polish Andrew?
Obsidian always seem to be making great games, and like several others this sounds awesome. But the end products have always been so unfinished and glitched that they are mostly unplayable.
I've been burnt too many times to buy without some clear guarantee that the game is acutally finished/playable.
Even launch reviews aren't much use, as most of the launch reviews for KotOR2 clearly hadn't played it all and didn't mention that it was a total mess.
(RPGs in non sci-fi / fantasy settings are awesome and overdue though)
Bluemanrule @ Aug 15th 2009 9:19AM
I've decided to stop comparing this game to Mass Effect. I think the people at Obsidian and Sega (pulishers) will appreciate us reviewing the game on its own merits. It looks intriguing and I'm interesting in playing a RPG based on a realistic premise.
This game will get pre-ordered as soon as I find out what non-Gamestop pre-order bonuses it has. I'd prefer not to give them my $$.
Gel @ Aug 15th 2009 11:40AM
Does this have Co-Op Multiplayer?
Or is it single player only?
I don't think any RPG should launch these days without Co-Op through the campaign :-)
Pimliconite @ Aug 15th 2009 9:21PM
The smiley mean that that's a joke right?
Gel @ Aug 15th 2009 9:26PM
No, not a joke.
I honestly think that Computer RPGs should all support Co-Op through their respective campaigns.
Broadens the player base, extends the content and generally makes the experience more fun.
You can play it Solo all the way to the end, or you can play and enjoy it with your friend or significant other, same campaign.
Makes gaming a more fun experience, in my view.
I'm thinking of games like Baldur's Gate, Fable II, Neverwinter Nights etc. Play alone, or play with a friend. Halo as well, same premise.
