The exact release date for Zipper Interactive's multi-multi-multi-man FPS MAG has been up in the air for a while now -- but a recent announcement on PlayStation.Blog has made the game's launch date decidedly cemented. It's hitting store shelves on January 26, 2010, landing atop an ever-expanding aggregate of first-quarter blockbusters. However, most of its seasonal competitors don't allow for four to the fourth power players to square off in a single battle, so we don't think it'll have any trouble holding its own.
Honestly, we'd hoped it would land a bit closer to the game's initial announced fall launch window -- but hey, at least now Zipper's got a bit of extra time to nail down an actual title for the game.

I kinda anticipated most people would pick Raven (which, is the faction I kinda want) and probably would go second for Valor, get the Call of Duty refugees.
But, it's interesting what you guys are saying, looking like SVER is getting a bit of

Can't wait. This game is going to be epic, quite literally.
Hmm, this releases the day after my brother's birthday. Maybe I can convince him to give it to me for HIS birthday.

Scared off by Modern Warfare 2, Halo ODST, and Left 4 Dead 2 I see.

I honestly doubt this was scared off by anything. Given the scale of this game, the slight delay is welcomed. I want it to run like a dream.

Yeah the potential lag issues worry me a bit. connection is bad enough on Call of Duty. Fingers crossed.

I would believe MW2...dont want to be TOTALLY Eclipsed by that ya know....but I'm guessing its so they can get more Beta time to get the code JUST right....

Look the reason cod lags is cus its running on one of the players ps3 ( or whatever)
This game MAG will be running on a giant slant six server reducing the chance of lag a whole lot.
Man i wish i got invited to the Beta i never beta tested anything : ( but hopefully that will change i just signed up for The APB beta hope i get in

Don't think so. MAG has garnered enough interest from players and Zipper has enough reputation to hold its own. This was certainly a business decision from Sony to avoid competing with itself. The Holiday season is the release window for most games, as you know. If, for example, Valkyrie Chronicles had released earlier in the year instead of in the middle of the Holiday season last year I am sure it would have fared much better as an exclusive. For the PS3 U2 and R&C will dominate the charts (and wish lists) this season. By late January most people will have finished them just in time for MAG to pop up.

i hope they just wanted to finish the game, and if beta tests say more work is needed i wouldnt mind a later release date if it means a better product at launch.

I'd rather it be "delayed" and good than rushed and horrible.

I still think it's odd that they never gave the game a name beyond "MAG."
Go ahead, get all huffy puffy about it, and vote me down for saying it, but I just find it odd.

What about you....MARTY?
Is that all you've got?
"Oh, I'm just a lonely engineer, don't mind me. My name's Marty and well, I don't do much and I still live with my Mom but, you should really check out our basement!"

whats the deal with pickin on marty over this. people did that on another forum too.
he has a valid point.
and if you read the joystiq post, even they feel the same way:
quoted:
'''at least now Zipper's got a bit of extra time to nail down an actual title for the game.'''
i would quit the fanboy replies and understand that marty just has a simple question that happens to be a bit funny also.

You're always bagging out the name but have you ever looked at your own avatar? Team Fortress 2: A game where two TEAMS complete objectives that often revolve around their own FORTRESS'.

I read somewhere, and saw in one of the videos, that it could be called MAG: Shadow War. A quick Google search provides articles and forum posts.
The title Shadow War is based on the three factions, which are all mercenaries, battling each other without alerting civilians.

Graphics aren't everything. A lot of people still go back to play PS1 and PS2 games like myself and enjoy them.
I can guarantee you will never see a 200+ player game running on the Unreal 3 Engine or Infinity Ward's COD engine and if you did you would notice an extreme
decrease in graphics quality. Zipper compromised graphics for player count for MAG and its gameplay design, it is not a bad thing.
Call of Duty MW2 is more of an Arcade pick up and play shooter which I look forward to buying and playing. I've been a fan of the CoD series since the first one on the PC...Infinity Ward focused a lot of attention on arcade style gameplay rather than a deeper multiplayer experience.
MAG has a true ranking system that isn't just there for show, if you are high ranked you are able to give out orders to your squad, your squad will be awarded xp for completing those orders. MAG has a persistent world that changes. While you aren't playing, other players in the faction you've chosen are still competing to change the faction's standing so you might return to play a day later and the faction you are in might have a better or worse standing.
You are really competing with the other factions, a faction that has a better standing after winning battles and gaining territory will receive perks like better XP gains and better respawn timers.
I can't wait to play MAG I've been waiting for a game like this on consoles. Planetside was awesome back in the day on PC.

haha, i love the guy in the picture that's prone in the middle of the battlefield. he's only in a wide open space surrounded by 30 of his upright teammates with a scrawny bush to his right, but hey, you gotta think tactical.

Sorry Joystick. I don't see the name "MAG" changing at all. It sounded like a code name when the game was announced last year (and it probably was then) but I think by now it has caught on in people's minds. It certainly has become a brand name of its own.

the game is excellent. well polished.
graphics are crisp, there's plenty of static plants and brush to hide in for sniping if thats your thing. this doesn't affect the fps that I've seen. objective clearing is easy to understand through the hud.
the battlefields can be large but not all of them are, they scale with the missions...i.e. not every game is going to be 256 players max. you work up to those through the experience system which by the way is handled well allowing you to specialize into various rolls - assault, heavy weapons, sniper, recon, etc. - and see returns right away on that specialization.
see you guys in there.
