Growth in sales, during a tough economic time, implies poor growth before?

It's possible, but it's not implied here with any certainty. They did better than most in the NPD anyway, so I'd say it's unlikely.

$101 million in third party sales...for July? That's mighty impressive. I can only think of 2 games that would spark such sales, Battlefield 1943 and MvC2.

That is pretty damn impressive. I mean those numbers draw the attention of dev's. They know that number could very well double during holiday season.

That price cut was a stroke of genius, timed almost perfectly in sync with the more recent stock market crash, though one wonders whether that timing was quite deliberate in their case.

Either way, it tossed out the possibility of the PS3 catching up (a great possibility back then), and i suppose that's enough for them

The 360 does seem to be shaping up to be the PS2 of the last generation, though probably not to as dominating a degree.

Doesn't surprise me much. the wii has hardware sales n all about 3 games that get bought now (wii fit, wii play, wii sports resort, oh and those imagination games to cant forget those) but thats about it the rest of its software goes straight to 20$ or less within the span of a few months. PS3 just sint cutting it for most but is getting some nice exclusives finally and the online store has some nice additions (FFVII for 10$ hell yes) But the 360 is pretty much the PS2 of this generation hands down. Its got all the 3rd party developers running over to it with open arms, most active online gaming even with the other 2 systems being free to play online.

You think if sony or nintendo didn't have these statistics they wouldn't show them off. Its business your suppose to show the progress and increasing popularity of your console.

It's not like sony or nintendo is to noble to bring up these things if they were to have them.

It really depends. There are different schools in marketing. One is what you see from Microsoft, spin everything into positive, if it's positive spin it into triumph, go as far as spreading plain lies if you have to, and if you can throw as much mud as you can on your direct competitors. In any case always cry victory.
The other, that you see quite a lot in Japan (and Sony is a Japanese corporation after all), is to keep things down to earth and realistic. The perfect example of this is Sony's policy of announcing the "sold to customers" numbers instead of the "shipped to retailers" numbers.
There are several reasons to do that, and one is not to create false expectations in investors and shareholders. It's true that Ethics are rare to find in the business field, but this doesn't mean that they don't exist at all.

The PS3 will do 1080p at 120fps on two displays at the same time.

It can stream 40 1080p HD videos at once!!

It can solve world hunger and bring world peace.

Everyone will want one, even if they have to work two jobs to afford it.

Yup, Sony is really down to earth.

Speaking as a PS3 owner, please, shut up.

Your fanboy-blinkers do nobody any good.

Instead of living in a Sony fantasy world where they can do no wrong, how about having the courage to call it like it is? i.e. Sony are just like MS and Nintendo. The only difference is that their product isn't selling, mostly due to a high price.

FANBOYS, please understand something: you are NOT HELPING. Your single-minded zealotry actually turns people away from the very console you are boosting.

If you have to try so hard to try and impress people of the virtues of the PS3, then something is wrong, isn't it? If the system is so good, so fairly priced, then it should sell itself. It shouldn't need your constant attacks on the 360 and 360 owners.

@womble: as an all consoles owner, you, sir, are full of it, to be nice :D

The fact that sony is the only console maker that provides sell-through sales instead of sell-in sales (which are much more realistic) is well known. Just as it's well known that even on their best periods their marketing is much less "we win the world, and our competition is shit" than microsoft.

As I said, there are two different schools to marketing, it doesn't make one producer "better" than the other, simply more realistic and more boastful.

Abriael:

Of course Sony, MS, and Nintendo ALL announce what has been SOLD TO RETAILERS.

Not one of them has any way of knowing what the retailers actually sell, they can only compile statistics based on what retailers order from them. The metric is the same for all three.

Sony doesn't have some magical hold over the supply chain that allows them to accurately announce customer sell through of their products. If they tried placing such a reporting burden on every store that sells PS3 the overhead would cause many to just drop the product from their inventory. The margins aren't worth it.

So get some understanding of worldwide logistics issues and stop spewing the nonsense.

You PS3 fanboys are just pathetic! Your games won`t be any less fun if the 360 sells better. I mean everyone feels the need to justify spending his money on something and afterwards to defend his purchase because of "social pressure" but this is just ridiculous! Go play with your console instead of behaving like idiots on internet forums..

I wasn't a believer at first but now I believe. The Xbox 360 is the greatest console this gen and Xbox LIVE is the most superior console online service that is unmatched. In moments of economic hardships, the Xbox 360 has risen and gives people who are financial depression something to look forward to after a hard days work. Live in your world, play in the Xbox 360s. It's fun, jump in.

Yeah, I bet those $50 a year are doing wonders for "people who are financial depression" like you said ahaha

unsurprisingly, they left the 360 article alone but the PS3 one had all sorts of sarcastic remarks and jabs at Sony. It's getting pretty tired now. Kotaku rarely does it anymore and the same with 1up which was even more infamous for Sony jabs.

Grow up mate. Joystiq aren't biased. They'll take most anyone's news stories as long as they attract readers. They've had heaps of pro-PS3 stories, and I'll bet you never complained about a single one of them.

Too bad they did not show growth with software and exclusives games were it should actually matter tot he consumer. The last notable game on the 360 was Gears of War 2 and the next is Halo 3 ODST.Does MS have any other games to offer other than the 2 mentioned? Besides GTA DLC,this company has not talked about software since? ... Damn all they ever talk about is overrated Live features, sales and multiplatform games.I don't like the Wii,but at lewast Nintendo and Sony both have exclusive games to offer their consumers and some originality.

Funny, I laugh at those (like you) who think that Live is better than PSN. And even if it is better, the difference between the two services isn't worth its price tag. Keep paying your $40 a year, lol. All I know is that by the end of this console cicle I will have paid less for my PS3 than you have for your 360.

I used to own a ps3 and wii but i sold my wii cause i never played it and my mom broke my ps3. I only have a xbox 360 right now and now looking at the difference i can hoestly saying being a ps3 owner and a 360 and played both the same amount of time thats PS3 Is superior. For all i care you can say live is better then psn or vice versa but what matters to me is the price tag and psn is free. Its not that i can't afford live its just that why i should i pay when i used to play the same thing for free. I mostly play online i don't use netflix I can't im in canada and i don't use cross game chat i would rather talk on the phone or 1 person. 23 Million PS3'S have been sold vs xbox 360 30 Million and remeber there is a years difference. 1 year is a lot in the gaming world. PSN is a very good free service pretty much the same as live almost plus PSN has dedicated servers. I respect microsoft because there businessmen like me. They mange to sell hardware thats has one of the biggest failure rates ever and not only beat the competitors but put it on its own level. They manage to make people pay for online thats business and i respect microsoft for that but PS3 AND PSN are either the same as xbox 360 and live or better. Sony now having the 160GB pricedrop to 299or 399 not sure and bring back backwards compatibility through software pus releasing a slim model is going to put them on top. I am no fan boy i respect microsoft for there business mind and I respect sony for the console they have designed.
