I just have a hard time taking this article seriously with Mike Wilson being a part of the gaming industry. He doesn't have any real gaming knowledge, he doesn't play them, no clue about design, and just has conned his way from gig to gig over the years and the media writes about him because he's a loudmouth and plays by his own set of rules and they think that's interesting.

Stuff like this has done nothing to help the gaming industry. Just a bunch of minor leaguers who doesn't belong there.

I knew some people who were those contractors and I've done plenty of work for Gamecock

Mike Wilson pretty much laid it out exactly like it happened so I'd go ahead and take it seriously. I know a lot of people who worked with Gamecock and honestly for a few years they created quite a few jobs and helped a lot of studios get off the ground. They never bothered their developers and they trusted the people the hired.

Now I'm not saying that every project they signed was a gem but they definitely gave things a shot that a lot of people would have turned down.

South Peak is the real bad guy in this deal, a company that abused the fact that Gamecock did business in a very personal way (i.e. hired friends, friends of friends etc). They took that loop hole and screwed everyone over, made them desperate and tried to worm their way out of it.

If Harry and MIke hadn't been forthright with who they owed South Peak would have made a bigger deal about it.

Now in regards to "done nothing to help the industry" I'm going to have to completely disagree. A lot of jobs were created and a lot of experience gained for many developers. I've worked with a few different developers who worked with GC and I can tell you first hand I WISH I was working with GC again, the freedom to really create something unique doesn't come along that often in this industry and its quite unfortunate.

Personal attacks only make you look worse to any logical person reading this article who don't know you personally. For all we know, you are one of the parties involed at Southpeak Interactive.

Who Mike Wilson is or isn't has no bearing on this story, as even a drunken vagrant (not saying he is) can tell you your house is on fire. The important thing is many people were cheated out of their hard work and weren't paid for their efforts very diliberately. I need to see if these Southpeak people hold seats in public office.

I'm glad joystiq is running this story as it gives insight into the industry and gives some opportunity for the truth to get out, as it can be corroborated with the involved parties getting screwed. It's sad that these practices are common in the entertainment industry, like someone has the idea that being a lying, shady, theif is what it takes to get ahead.

That Chris in the comments section my guess is non other than Chris Lax who works for SP. Hence the personal attack is my guess.

I know a lot of people who have worked for GC and they never treated any developer badly etc. Bills were paid, creative folks were left to do their own thing.

When Mike and his crew did the same stint and then sold Godgames to Take2, none of this was an isssue because Take2 paid everyone that needed to be paid as part of the acquisition. Nobody accused Mike and co or Take2 for doing anything like this.

Sure GC gets a bad rap for their PR antics, but those are totally different from how the game publishing side is actually handled.

You can bet that the Cyan Worlds fans have heard about this now, and that Southpeak is going to have virtual torches and pitchforks at their door.

This is the group of fans that got a publisher-killed game up and running for 3 years on their own, and Cyan being stiffed has roadblocked the Open Source Myst Online effort. You don't get in the way of these people and their Cavern :)
