Good thing this isn't pay to play, sonyboy. There is the way it is now... And then there will be a subscription service on top of that which will allow the people who pay to create their own rooms rather than having to look for one.

To be fair, you can probably pick up a copy of Quake 3 now with the loose change in your pocket.

Actually, I've still got my copy of Quake III Arena laying around here. I have been meaning to reinstall it lately. Your idea is exactly what I was thinking when I first played Quake Live. I did think Quake Live was a neat experiment though.

Actually, the problem here will be finding a store that still sell the game. I couldnt be arsed to order it on a online store. That would cost me not just money but also time. But playing it instantly for free is a better option.

He is definitely a genius.

I'm a little unclear on how porting quake 3 to a webbrowser and putting ads into it turned into a money losing enterprise though. I mean, this guy singlehandedly ports stuff to the iphone in a day or two...how do you lose money on this?

I'd assume it has to do with the servers they pay for to run it?

Are they? They always had community run servers before.

There is a difference... This isn't a retail game- it's browser based and free to play. Someone has to the host the servers. They were relying on ad revenue to pay for them, but I guess people aren't clicking enough of the ads or whatever.

Carmack said from the beginning that the Quake Live project was an experiment of sorts.

He is always experimenting, whether through graphics algorithms, the shareware model, or this business model. I admire him for that.

I know Battlefield Heroes is on a different business model but I wonder how profitable is it for EA. Maybe id could adopt something like that for Quake Live.

Very profitable. In fact, Joystiq just recently made a post about it, turns out people love buying virtual clothes for their avatar.

Especially when they used to offer them as only a 'rental' item that will expire, then began offering the items for permanent at MANY times the initial price. Also, people enjoy playing a fresh game and therefore don't mind paying a little more to rent servers.

Who would pay for such a old game hes still not gonna make much $ i mean lets be realistic i wouldn't dish out 10 dollars or 5 dollars for a old first person shooter yes i've played quake live its cool cause the fact its free and when at work nothing to do hit you're buds up to play but Carmack should be a little more realistic with the approach and lend it out for free its not gonna kill him i think he would gain more people by doing so cause again new comers to such a old looking game with unimpressive graphics not knowing what all the hype or fun is all about wont dish out the cash for such a game with poor graphics and not knowing what to expect either amp the graphics give it a lil update then selling me somthing that is that is old and outdated that shouldn't be sold for a dime cause its not worth what it was 10 years ago or however old quake 3 is I see other games running for free and they don't complain he should be proud and let it out for free to the public by showing what type of work he has provided not nagging for more cash look at wolfenstien enemy territory their own game its up for free no one is complaning and war rock Carmack will be making alot of money with rage and his new engine Tech 5 that will be sold to other companies that will be wanting to use so I don't see the need to complain for more Ca$h

The graphics might not be top-notch, but it allows those with lower-end computers to be able to play the game, without being setback because of their computer. Graphics don't make a game. Gameplay before graphics.

I agree though that most people aren't as 'gameplay > graphics' minded, so finding people willing to pay a subscription fee for a decade-old FPS may be hard.

On the other hand, no he shouldn't just keep it up losing money. Nobody has any right to demand that of anybody - id have to pay for the infrastructure, various legal costs and all sorts to keep the thing running. You can't just ask a business to run at a loss on the assumption that they'll make it back on their other projects, especially in this climate.

Hi. THE GAME WILL STILL BE FREE!

What will happen is id will begin relying on the QL hardcores to rent servers to both help increase capacity and provide extra income while giving those who rent them complete control over the server settings.

http://img268.imageshack.us/i/lolquake3.jpg/

I own Quake 3 but it's annoying cause I need to patch and update and blah blah and I am restricted from certain servers cause I am incompatible etc. I like Quake Live I just launch it and play, I like the stats and awards etc. I would def pay to play. its worth 10 bucks

Don't forget Quake Arcade is coming to XBLA I am sure it will be 10 bucks as well

I stopped playing Quake Live when I realized it was just Quake 3 in a browser.

Sure, it was a good and revolutionary game in its time, but its just old now.

It's really no wonder the ad-supported system isn't working out: I've never seen any ads in the game at all. Every server just has the default Quake Live logo's running, rather than genuine ads.

As for the subscription fee for creating / hosting private servers/matches: great idea. It'll make it a much more viable competitive game, and competitive players are used to paying hosting fees for servers anyway (need to do so, if you want a clanserver in ANY game really). Only now it'll be ID raking in the cash rather than some 3rd party.

Quake Live is awesome, I hope they can turn it profitable. They certainly have enough players to support it once they find the right business model.

With a platform where people can play shooters for free online, and to suddenly be asked to subscribe in order to play, wouldn't be a good model for most people. In fact you'll probably lose players because of it. In my opinion.

Well, like the man said. It's not going Pay to play only. You can still run around and play normally. You'll just see some new ads asking you to subscribe instead of just ones for basketball shoes.

The premium service was planned for quake live from the very beginning to allow people to host their own servers in which ever country they like when ever they like. This is great for people that play the game more seriously in teams and such. Quake Live will still be the same for those that don't pay, its just offering extra features for those willing to pay.

I shall be the first to subscribe, the game is awesome.
