We always thought the Leguizamo-infused Super Mario Bros. film had the propensity to be amazing, if only a more visionary director had grasped the reins of the adaptation. The video we've posted after the jump gives a look into a parallel universe of what could have been -- a universe where Quentin Tarantino had control of the plumber's first silver screen excursion.
The video was produced by the folks over at GamerVision. You might want to brush up on the trailer for Tarantino's upcoming film Inglourious Basterds before you check it out -- their video is a shot-by-shot remake of said trailer, only it takes place in the Mushroom Kingdom instead of Nazi Germany. We never thought about it before watching the video, but the similarities between these two regions are actually rather striking.

Tarantino and Mario? A match made in heaven. I always dreamed of a game with the likeness of Conker's Bad Fur Day with the setting of Mario World. Never going to happen, though.

Paper Mario has been pretty good at satirizing Mario tradition (Luigi in TTYD was hilarious!), but I'd love to see it taken to the next level too.

Very much agreed, Savage. Paper Mario 64, especially upon release, was incredibly original and satisfying.

What about Jackie Brown Yoshi?
There's also that one scene he directed in Mushroom City.
Then of course he wrote but didn't direct Natural Born Killer Ball(that's from Mario Superstar Baseball).
Finally, there's actually a minigame in Mario Party 6 called Dust 'Til Dawn.

Anyone who thought a Mario Brothers movie had the potential to be "amazing" needs to get out more.

I don't care what anyone says, it is an amazing almost cyberpunk-esque take on Mario's vague story. It deserves a lot of credit for completely turning the game's world on its head. It's totally watchable too.

It may be the nostalgia talking but I always found the Super Mario Bros. Movie to be the best out of any old video game movie. Mortal Kombat was fun too but Mario was an interesting take. Street Fighter with Van Damn was awful. Then the more recent boom of video game movies have just spoiled the names of video games. Thanks to Uwe Boll.

It was good in its own cheesy way. besides, how the hell does one take Mario universe and create a serious movie? In other words, don't expect heavy set drama in a colorful background.

Best part was when Mario slammed the shy guy's face into the table

For a serious take on the Mario Universe, just head over to The Escapist and watch "There Will Be Brawl". That series show is awesome. :) Drunk, brawling Mario with a thirst for blood...Luigi a part-time drug dealer in order to support his alcoholic, washed up brother...Peach a princess who can't go without giving herself out to Mario, even though he's turned into scum...Link the chief of police on a power trip to give conquered Hyrule the chance to rule the Mushroom Kingdom...great stuff. :)

I totally watched it.
And any movie with Dennis Hopper deserves at least an extra star for that alone.
