There was a major design element in Doom 3 that a lot of players took issue with -- and no, we're not talking about the protagonist's inability to hold a firearm and a source of illumination at the same time. The element was the game's enemy spawning mechanic, which would make baddies appear when the player reaches set points in the level -- a practice which has since been nicknamed "monster closets." Fortunately, it seems id's next angrily-named project won't feature this oft-harangued spawning system.
In a recent interview with 1UP, Rage lead designer Matt Hooper explained that enemies in a certain section of the game's demo will be "doing whatever they're supposed to be doing. If they're supposed to be defending against you coming there, they'll be doing that. If they're just tinkering or having a conversation they'll do that." Sounds like id's AI has actual motivation now. Well, motivation beyond "scare the crap out of then murder space marines," anyway.

Well, Rocky. Hold your breath.
For a long time, so hopefully you pass out, and your spirit animal comes to you in a dream, and explains exactly how, and why Bioshock is one of the best games ever made.
Your spirit animal will be a newt.

I think ESC covered it pretty well. What I was trying to say is that monster closets alone don't really determine the quality of a game. In fact, (as ESC points out), there are genres are difficult to do any other way. I mean, if you clear a level and there are no monsters left as you walk around, it kinda takes the "survival horror" out of the game.

Rocky, Bioshock is a masterpiece, a work of beautiful art. Whenever I play the game I always feel that this isn't just one of the best games ever made, it's one of the best things ever made. What a magnificent game.

That seemed obvious from the trailer.

My favorite glitch in Doom 3 was when I spotted an imp standing behind a piece scenery that I wasn't supposed to see. He was just like a guy in a haunted house, standing around bored waiting for someone to come by to scare. I shot him a bunch of times and he absorbed all the bullets and just stood there. When I got to the point where he was supposed to jump out, he literally just dropped dead.

I don't get it...
Are the monsters coming out of the closet?

I may be alone in saying this, but I enjoyed Doom 3 very much and kinda' liked the "monster closet" idea, though the execution was a bit off from what it should have been. There should have been a lot more "tearing through walls" in that game, rather than just teleportation- they should have left that to the Wraith and Lost Souls alone. By tearing through walls, I mean like what happened when you first met the Imp- climbed through a gap in the wall and came after you or where they tore through doors and what not.

i remember monster closets in the first doom games. you'd flip a switch with the appropriate colored key and a door would open with monsters in it. i remember using god mode in the snes version and getting into a room filled with monsters before i was suppose to and from the back way. they just stood there from what i remember so i was just punching my way toward the door and when it opened thats when the survivors came to life only to be punched to death.

At least doom 3 wasn't like Rainbow Six Vegas, that was HORRIBLE. I cannot tell you how many times ive gotten so frustrated to the point that I wanted to bash my xbox in with a baseball bat after being shot in the back from a terrorist that spawned right behind me in terrorist hunt.

I think the producer must work on the issues of the gamers which they are facing that the baddies appear when the player reaches set points in the level.......I suggest that they should work on the game issue and try to launch some new modes and rounds to overcome the previous issues and make the work more goal oriented.............

I finished up DOOM 3 not too long ago, i really liked the game, save for the final boss who was a cheap P.O.S, but the rest of the game was cool. I grew up (like literally, i was 5ish) playing DOOM, so i see why people didn't care for DOOM 3 since it played somewhat differently, but i thought it was well executed. i actually think holding the flashlight and the gun at the same time would make the game worse. The monster thing is kinda silly, it's been like that since DOOM, you press a switch and shit hits the fan, nothing changed in DOOM 3.

Oh great, the Doom 3 haters have won over ID games.
They tried uber intelligent AI's in "horror" games, but L4D, and Resident Evil 4 wasn't even close to being scary, or even spooky.
Every single opposer was simply SCARED of Doom 3 anyway, which is why they kept on crying about the flashlights. If you don't think the game is frightening at all, then you better shut your mouth about the flashlight, or else you simply fail to prove your point.
I know I ain't even looking forward to a whine-service style Doom 4. Back to playing Doom 3 in co-op.
