JC....umm....how do I put this? Your own site just posted that the game is finished. So stating that "Remedy seems to NOW be treating it like a real game that may be released in the near future" seems well....what's the word?

Dear Joystiq,

Stop confusing me with your dangerously 'witty' headlines. I hate having to read them more than once to "get" them.

You would think the power of Heart would grant me the ability to comprehend humor, but when you have green hair, red tightie-whities and you have to go home to Rosie O'Donnell every night, you pretty much lose all human emotion.

Looks like a winner. A game that will be worth the wait. The use of light as a primary weapon is an neat idea. The character models look to be low poly however. Too much blockiness that reminds me of Gears. The character facial modeling is not all that good either. Call me spoiled but after seeing Uncharted 2 character faces and bodies....this just looks meh to me. Frack, even Uncharted 1 has better character faces.

What I mean is, they are not very lifelike which can take away from the experience and immersion that Remedy is trying to create. This game is a clear indication to me that the 360 cannot compete with the level of detail and polish of a PS3 game. Downvote me all you want....but doing that will not take away the fact that the 360 is not on the same level as the PS3...and the PS3 games will continue to evolve and get better with each generation while it is clear to me that the 360 is being squeezed to its limit.

Perhaps that is why remedy abandoned the GTA style go anywhere do anything gameplay. The 360 simply could not keep up.

I think what remedy has done with the limitations of the 360 is amazing...it almost looks as good as Uncharted 1...almost.

Killjebus, If you're such a graphics nut, why don't you go watch a DVD. They have great graphics and all the characters look very realistic. You can even play them without a controller, so you can be immersed in it.

I bet you're one of those people that needs pictures in their books too.

Yes.. this is all very interesting. I'm sure graphics are what makes or breaks a game, right? You PS3 fanboys are such graphic whores now. It's funny in the last gen how PS2 graphics were the weakest and nobody cared. It still had a huge library of great games. And you're wrong. Immersion in games today are more about interaction and less about graphics. Take Halo for instant. The game is starting to look dated among the other titles out there.. but even after 2 years it is still widely played onlline as the most popular title on XBL. And if you'll notice.. even with all the hardware power you are talking about in the PS3, games are remembered as much on that console as a big budgeted popcorn flick at the theater on opening weekend. Killzone 2 or Heavenly Sword anyone? I'd compare AAA titles on PS3 to something like Transformers 2. Fun to view the first time but very forgettable. Name a title that people are playing as much as Gears or Halo. Yeah, that's what I thought. Theres all your superior hardware at work.

So after after I read the preceding comments, I tried to go back and read his post and it had been downvoted so far, it was nearly impossible.

I particularly liked how he went from liking the game, to bashing the game and then to bashing the 360 altogether. It's like he tried his best to disguise his fanboy-ness, but he just couldn't keep it under wraps.

Personally, I'll agree that the PS3 is a more powerful, I think everyone here knows that. But you can't say that just because of that, a developer/console isn't capable of producing a great gaming experience - which Alan Wake will no doubt be. Oh, and the game looks pretty damn good, btw.

Graphics are not everything...but they are the biggest factor for me in immersion. Graphics matter, they matter to everyone on this blog. If they didn't...then why did I see so many posts about how good Gears looks and the the PS3 would never be able to achieve that level circa 2007? Yet now that it is clear that the PS3 DESTROYS the 360 in terms of lighting, detail, character models, animation, size...now the same loyal 360 fans tell me that graphics don't matter?

I am sorry that your 360 with its DVD drive and measly 3 processors cannot compete with the biggest baddest boy on the console block, the Cell.

I am sorry that you will never see a game on the 360 that looks as good as Uncharted 1, KZ2, Heavy Rain, GT5, GOW3, Uncharted 2....on so on.

I am even more sorry that I was right all along when back in 2007 when so many were bashing the PS3 with hey...where are these amazing graphics that Sony promised. I am sorry sorry sorry that I said to you all give Sony time, the games will come...good games take time.

I am sorry that I said back in 2007 that the PS3 will continue to evolve and put out better looking, and bigger games each and every year while the 360 will stagnate.

I am superduper sorry that I was right...and most of you were wrong.

Don't worry your pretty little heads though...a multi-platform game will come along with slightly better results on the 360 and we will see a bunch of posts that say the 360 is more powerful.

Just think, in 1 day, Sony will show off GT5 in all its glory, announce the PS3 Slim and all hell will break loose.

Then why do we still see so many multi-platform comparisons with comments like the 360 looks better, the PS3 can't keep up?

And I did not say that Remedy was not capable of making a great game with the 360. I said that it was to bad that they had to curtail their original vision to work within the limitations of the 360 from their original open world idea where nearly everything would be up to you in what you the player wanted to do. And yes the game is one of the best looking 360 games that I have seen...if not the best.

Like it or not, DVD and the weaker 360 CPU has limited what Remedy was able to do. I still really like what this game looks to be, and I will play this game when it comes out.

This game and Mass Effect2 are 2 games that I am most intrigued by for the 360.

I am glad I am able to make so many friends from this post. Keep 'em coming boys.

I especially love how most of you take what I have said and decided that the only thing I care about is graphics. I still play RBI baseball on my NES and I still play Worms for the PS1 on my PS3. Graphics and gameplay are the most important factors for me, without both of them humming along in unison, it takes away from the experience. But if I had to choose, I say gameplay 1st...without good gameplay, I would get bored after an hour or 2.

Lucky for me and other PS3 owners...I CAN HAS BOTH!!!!

Ahhhhh. Poor little PS3 fan has to clutch onto his graphics to make himself feel better that PS3 is still in 3rd place. Funny that with all the hardware issues, blu-ray, etc.. PS3 still can't manage to steal the spotlight from 360's library of games and XBL service. Too bad your graphics rant doesn't mean #$(# to all the Wii and 360 owners out there enjoying all their titles that actually have release dates.

HAHAHA! GT5?!? Forza 3 is coming out this year. See, there's no wait over here. Sorry you have faith in titles that are subjected to constant delays only to release underwhelming. KZ2 was a beautiful game. I had really high hopes for that one. But after playing it for a day and finding the controls to fail in comparison to even Halo 2... I had to return that title in order to continue on with Halo and the COD franchise. Sorry you like to witness your games in blu-ray quality only to have them collect dust for finishing second to titles that have managed to be immensely fun without all the bells and whistles developers aren't even using. You keep tellng yourself that graphics are what makes titles. Ask Factor 5 how that's working out for them. Boy, that HAZE title was a fantastic one to boast about too. HAHA! Funny PS3 fanboy. Such a sweet kid. ;P

I agree. Environments and lighting looks fantastic but the character models are a bit geometric. The blockiness of the sheriff in particular looks reminiscent of the Half Life G-man as he appeared in Half Life 2. That isn't to say that the G-man looked bad in Half Life 2, but developers have improved charater models quiet a bit since 2004.

Perhaps this is one of the things Remedy are going to polish over the next few months? Here's hoping!

Thanks Chris, good to know that at least 1 person saw past my poking fun at the 360. I want this game to be good, Its too bad that Remedy was forced to go completely off their original vision because of the limitations of the 360's DVD drive and subpar CPU.

Nothing screams 2004 more than blocky character models, and the 360 is full of them.

Whoa whoa whoa...Alan Wake isn't open world? Did this dumb fuck really say that?

From Remedy's Morry on the Alan Wake forums...

"Before you jump to conclusions, let me ask you this: how do you create terror and suspense in a scene by letting the player do anything and go anywhere they want?

Creating suspenseful moments requires the player to be in certain places at certain times which can only be created by having the player follow a linear, predetermined path. This allows the developers to have full control over what the player sees, hears and thinks. You simply cannot have this level of control if you make the whole game open-world / sandbox / whatever fancy word they are using now.

The game will have both linear sequences (for the thriller part of the game) and exploration (for the quieter periods). "

From Remedy's ADM:

"Also "open-world" and sandbox are totally different things. Alan Wake is "open-world" and always has been "open-world". Alan Wake is not a sandbox game.

Not being sandbox /= linear.

Thank you and good day."

You just wait.2010 is the year of PS3. If it's not 2010.. then it's 2011 for sure. If it's not the year of PS3 by 2011.. we'll catch it again in 2012. HAHA! See where this is going? Damn, so many games reserved here already on the 360 side of the fence. Might be pretty broke this winter with all these titles coming out. :) Oh, well.. .enjoy your pictures and videos of GT5.

Also, you cant compare popularity with greatness. Even though tons of people are still playing Halo 3, does that make it great? No.

Halo 3 is the same as Halo 2 but with upgraded graphics anyway..

That makes absolutely no sense. Not just great.. but great 2 years later my friend. I wasn't arguing PS3 had no good titles. I didn't mention the ones you mentioned. I simply said graphics don't make a hit. 360 has titles that are still wildly popular 2 years after release. And yes, if people are still playing them.. that does say something about how fun they are... which makes them great.

Alot of people playing a game means its popular. Just because its popular doesn't mean its good. Halo is not a bad game, but its not good either. Gears of War strikes me the same way. The only game that would make me consider buying a 360 looks to be Alan Wake.
3rd place? Where are we racing to?

Seriously... you PS3 lovers make no sense today. How is a game popular if it's not good? Your reasoning doesn't make sense. This isn't high school. You don't have to buy a game to be popular. That makes no sense at all. It's popular because people like to play it. People like to play it cause it's good. It's only raised the bar along with COD for console FPS's. It's a name that is well known and loved in the game industry. Killzone 2 had their chance to be great but didn't even set itself apart from other shooters. It was just a pretty game. I don't hear anyone talking about it anymore. I played it for a day and it felt like every other shooter out there. The controls were terrible in comparison to other console shooters. And at the moment.. there is nothing outside of blu-ray that interests me on PS3. There are too many games on the 360 I'm interested in to even have time to look at another console. Sorry to burst your bubble but XBOX 360 has plenty of QUALITY titles, DLC expansions, and arcade titles to make anyone happy.

Alan Wake has the good sense to pack a flashlight. Perhaps he is able to use this basic tool because he is not an FPS character in a horror game. So many of them seem incapable of seeing the benefits of carrying your own light source.

Am I the only one who isn't taken with this game? It looks to me like a cross between Condemned and RE5.

After all the fancy tech demos, I was seriously underwhelmed by the E3 footage I'm afraid, and it doesn't seem to be all that especially considering how long it was delayed. The gameplay looked clunky, the voice acting sounded B-movie and the enemies looked like generic Z-list horror, plus that minimap in the corner looks like it was ripped from an old MoH game.

I'll reserve judgment until it comes out but, for now, it's not the sort of thing I'm rushing out to pre-order.

The "finished" game is a far cry from the original idea, but I think this is a game that will still be worth playing. Yes the characters look blocky and the detail in the faces are not on par with Uncharted 1. The lighting is cool and could really set the mood of the game. Its just too bad that Remedy was forced to go away from their original GTA style go anywhere do anything direction....remember the tornado demo from 2005 where everything in its path was reduced to realistic rubble?

This game right here shows the limitations of the 360. This is a game made only for the 360 with a 4 year development time...and it cannot even hold the jock of Uncharted 1 that came out 2 years ago. Anyone who still thinks that the 360 is on par with the PS3 is just lying to themselves.

I would have really liked to see Remedy be able to make a game that matched their original vision. Oh well.

The gameplay will make or break this game. Not surprised that the graphics might be subpar because they probably hda the engine ready by say 2006, I dont think developers can change an engine much in the last 2/3rds of development. But what theyr really need to avoid is to end up looking like Alone in the Dark or Condemned. The reason Max Payne was so good was because nobody had done bullet time before (and the super cheesy cutscenes)
