Rather than let the statements made at QuakeCon 2009 by Elder Scrolls executive producer Todd Howard rest as they are, Bethesda's Pete Hines has clarified a few things on the company's blog. First and foremost, he wants to make sure that people know that another Elder Scrolls game will eventually be released. "Both Todd and I have said repeatedly that, of course, we're going to do another Elder Scrolls game," Hines outright states. Rather than comment directly on what Bethesda is currently working on, he instead notes that, "We aren't going to confirm or deny or comment on speculation, nor are we going to give hints about anything ... if you know us by now, you know we don't really do that."
Hines additionally points out that Bethesda Softworks (the game studio) isn't working on an MMO at the moment, per the speculation surrounding a possible Elder Scrolls MMO. ZeniMax Online Studios, however, is working on an MMO, though "they have not said anything about what game they are making." It looks as though an upcoming Elder Scrolls MMO may be more likely than seeing numero cinco anytime soon, folks. What happened to that "possible 2010 release," eh, Bethesda?

I'd rather have it play like Oblivion where the enemies leveled up with you to keep a balance and let you strategize a way to defeat them. In morrowind with the enemies preset to levels once I got super powerful i was killing them with one swing.
Either way I can't want to see what they pull together next game.

I'm kind of on the fence with enemy scaling. I do like the idea of the game always being challenging, but at the same time it removes the feeling of progression.. I liked that in Morrowind you'd eventually be super powerful, to the point where you could even take out a God.
The compass, fast traveling and random loot definitely need to go though. They killed any sense of exploration and adventuring.

Enemy scaling was just crap for an RPG. Why have a world to explore if nothing is going to eat you unless you're low on health? Half the fun in RPGs is exploring areas that you find have high level creatures and loot. The scaling was incredibly dumb, and probably one of the biggest reasons Oblivion got so much hate.

Well, I think they fixed some of these problems in Fallout 3. The leveling is there, but not quite as drastic. At low levels raiders can take you out if you're not careful. At around level 15, you start blowing their heads off in one shot. It still took me a while to kill deathclaws at level 21.
I think they also got fast travel right in Fallout. Once you find a place, you can travel there. If you haven't found it yet, you have to walk.
These are easily things they can incorporate into the next ES.
As for the leveling system, I think that will have to be similar,. because that is kind of what makes it an ES game. I love that using your sword makes you better at using your sword. But leveling up your character is definitely not intuitive, so I expect some changes...

I liked the morrowind system where you had to be very careful in certain areas when you were a low level because the enemies there would be way tougher than you were but the loot there was far more valuable than anything you had.

Fallout 3 is great and all. But nothing beats casting some magic and creeping into a house in the middle of the woods, killing the owner, pulling them to their bed, taking their clothes off and sleeping next to their body. MUHAHA. Oh and stealing their forks.

Quit teasing my co*k Bethesda. I want to give you many septims for V. I just went and bought a new copy of Morrowind GOTY edition for Xbox today. I haven't installed Windows on my new MacBook Pro so I have no mods to play :( . Daggerfall keeps crashing on Boxer so I needed to get my fix. Hell they have denied all the other sequels since Morrowind and one of their presidents did say they were working on the new one. (Skyrim was also copyrighted) Why not just let the nerds sleep easy Bethesda. I loved Fallout 3, but I want to know what happens to the empire now that SPOILER........
there is now septim line left to rule. I just don't get why there isn't a small staff dedicated to expansions on Oblivion and now Fallout 3 to make money off of all of us who would keep buying. Hell, now that the Achievement total has been raised Oblivion could go for another small expansion.

Why have they not at least put Daggerfall or Arena on XBLA? A friend of mine and I often joke about how Bethesda has the worst idea of how to run a business. We fans WANT TO PAY YOU MORE MONEY TO GIVE US WHAT WE LIKE. Do not get me wrong I do not want a sequel a year but every 3-5 would be nice, at least an expansion or two every year to keep it alive. Though the modding community picks up there slack there. Oh well guess I will have to settle for the third copy of Morrowind GOTY I have owned that I just got today. (Xbox version, as I have not installed windows on my new MacBook P yet.) Can not wait to play Blood Moon again.

Arena and Daggerfall are free man, there's no need for them to be on the XBLA.
For the next Elder Scrolls, it better go back to its Morrowind roots of unique environments, a non-crappy DarnUI style interface and more factions like the Great Houses. Oblivion was pretty horrid until the enchancement mods showed up.

I know, if you read above you would see that I have been running Daggerfall. I would not mind playing a non-buggy version of this or Arena on XBLA for some achievements. ID made money on their games, time for Beththesda to do the same. I would love a remastered version.

As long as New Vegas comes my way next year, I'll be content. I don't care much for the Elder Scrolls anymore... I just plain old didn't like Morrowind because I couldn't get into it, and Oblivion seemed bland by the time I finished it. It was too big for it's own good.

To each their own. Morrowind is bigger than Oblivon, Daggerfall bigger than that. I think the turn-off for many is the sheer scope and freedom of the games. Always a good idea to start with thieve's guild quest. These missions teach you essential skills and afford an opportunity to make a lot of septims early.

Sorry but based on what I've read, there wouldn't need to be this kind of follow up statement if things hadn't been overdramatized on various gaming blogs. Not just Joystiq or Kotaku, but any new site in general.
The situation was treated as an ultimatum of sorts and no offense, but the title of various articles did NOT help.
Though, it doesn't really matter to me. I just can't help but feel that saying something like... "Rather than let the statements made at QuakeCon 2009 by Elder Scrolls executive producer Todd Howard rest as they are" is just tossing a log on an attempting to die down fire.
Really it just... it seems like everyone is to blame. We all overreacted in some form and misinterpreted what was said, while at the same time 'perhaps' things could've been worded better...
...But I'd rather say it's our fault. Seriously, I just saw his statement as, "Don't expect anything within this year, look closer to next or the following year." Everyone else... You really read things too literally.

I get the feeling that the problem is with the GameBryo engine, not the animators themselves. They improved a lot of things when they moved from Oblivion to Fallout 3, and one of the things they still got wrong was the animation. So it wouldn't surprise me if it's an engine constraint.
Reply
Posted: Aug 18th 2009 2:38AM (Unverified) said
Even if it is an engine constraint, there isn't anything stopping them from modifying it to their needs. I mean, it isn't like they are just taking their models and popping them into a fully intact gamebryo engine, they've already modified it to the point they felt it would best present their game design. They just need to go that extra step, which may just be to hire new animators.

I think it shoudnt be MMo because Bethesda studio makes the best plots for games ever and they should do single rpg with co-op(it would be cool)

I agree and so do many Scrolls fans I know. Co-op would be nice maybe up to a small party tops. No need for an mmo. The game may still maintain its historical feel with a party assisting a main character. An mmo does not fit the universe. I could say that choosing a guild or house would be the way you might pick a class but it limits the historical scope of the game. The plot of all the games is that the player is fulfilling a prophecy laid out in an elder scroll. Not shit ton of dudes like in wow. I think Fallout is a better fit than the tameriel for an mmo. Fallout I would be all-over.

You know I have been thinking a bit about an elder scrolls MMO. As far as story wise I can see their motivation. A number of changes happened with Oblivion and the elder scrolls has been given a clean slate because of it. The Septim blood line ended, the empire has no heir, and the amulet of kings was destroyed.
After Oblivion its the start of the 4th era. I'm sure Bethesda could be cooking up something to work with a MMO in the elder scrolls universe dealing with the events that is happening in Tamriel sense the ending of Oblivion.
Of course this is all speculation and in the end it may very well end up being all hoopla. I was just churning idea's and I believe this is something that could be a possibility for the elder scrolls future.

Exactly. I would have always assumed The Elder Scrolls V wouldn't surface until the next console generation started. Unfortunately, it is becoming more and more evident that it won't be happening for a long, long time. 2012 at the absolute earliest. That is a mighty long wait for some Elder Scrolls, especially if the team has ideas and the fans are clamoring for TESV.
Enough time has passed that you'd expect another game by now, the planets just haven't aligned though, as you'd also be expecting all three companies to be announcing next-gen hardware too. I'm still hoping Bethesda is developing TESV for current console and PC hardware, just because I'm dying to play something new from the series. I'm sure they could still push something impressive out of PS360 while still keeping things fresh. Maybe just add that extra bit of stylization. I'm keen on waiting for the next cycle if I have to though, I still fondly remember being floored by Oblivions initial gameplay footage on the OXM discs and would love to feel that again.

- Fast travel is completely optional.
- The compass I might agree with, but it would be an easy disable option in the menu.
- Morrowind had random loot, too. A lot of it. It's just that there were instances of placed loot, so you could find that Daedric Claymore in Ruin X every single time.
Really, I think the next ES game will be a lot like Fallout 3 was. Leveled enemies, but not everywhere, and not all with uber equipment, and more reason to explore places unlike Oblivion, where everything was random loot.

I would love to see more classes and new races, maybe the introduction of gun powder based guns and make it to where the practice of magic isn't so big (kinda like necromancancy and how they don't do it in the open). Hell they could make it like the two sets of gods are in some patheon war.

I can stand not having the Elder Scrolls V yet. I haven't bought Fallout 3 yet. So I'll still have that to look forward to, as well as the fact that Starcraft 2 will most likely be coming out next year, and I've been playing Starcraft since it came out.
