FCC document indicates Sony planning 250GB PS3 Slim

The document states that the two consoles (along with two Slim debug unit models) were actually tested by the FCC back in March of this year and seem to have been sneakily submitted by Sony Computer Entertainment America under the guise of a fictitious business (Sand Dollar Enterprise) located at ... SCEA's Foster City, Calif. address. Sort of silly, if you ask us, but hey -- it worked.

CCC COMBO BREAKER
Wes @ Aug 18th 2009 9:51PM
CCCombo Breaker? I'd say its only a combo breaker if the 250GB slim Model comes in not too much higher than the $299.99 price point of the 120GB
I don't quite understand what the big news is today. I think there was no real price-cut in my opinion? Before I could walk into a store and come home with a PS3 that included the option to install linux, a copy of motorstorm and an ethernet cable for $299.99 dollars /w an 80gb hard drives.
Now, I can walk into a store and come home with a PS3 Slim that has a 120gb hard drives but no option to install inux, no free game and no ethernet cable for $299.99 dollars. So I'm still paying $299.99 dollars, right? How does this translate to a price cut when I no longer get a free(abet really cheap to buy free) game and a few less features ? I guess because I'll save $3.00 a year in power usage bills if I were to run a PS3 24/7?
Odd, I understand there's been tons of articles all over the internet telling me there was a price cut but I don't see it yet.
Night Elve @ Aug 18th 2009 10:27PM
Well Wes just taught me a lesson, people likes to complain for the sake of complaining. Even if SONY included an Ethernet Cable, HDMI Cable and the Linux feature would be still there, you would probably find another reason to complain about it.
An HDMI cable is cheap and you can buy it in any store, an Ethernet cable come on you can even build your own and don't pretend you were interested in the Linux feature as most of the PS3 owners didn't care about it.
This was a good move from SONY and the slim version looks great.
Paul @ Aug 19th 2009 1:06AM
what? the playstation was $399 sure there were sales every once in a while at certain places because they were trying to get rid of stock but it was $399, sooooo
yeah $299 is a price cut
Ridgecity @ Aug 19th 2009 3:27AM
Could this 250GB be out for Christmas? I was planning on getting a slim but no games means I gotta save a little more for a couple of games.
Should I wait? Looks like that SKU is also ready to go, and maybe wasn't announced to get the early adopters...
Chris D.(PSN: Aggie_CEO | XBL:The Aggie CEO | Steam: Aggie_CEO @ Aug 18th 2009 9:07PM
My Bet...We will see it at TGS...even tho you will come out better spending the extra hundred(120GB $299; 250GB $399) on a500GB HDD and install it yourself
Would be NICE if it gets bundled with GT5
Rob S. @ Aug 18th 2009 9:08PM
Oh I plan on doing that, just need to find a site or something that explains how.
goboColossus (LIVE, PSN - gobopop) @ Aug 18th 2009 9:16PM
Doesn't look like their is an HDD bay on the slim though. If there is, it is very cleverly hidden.
NukeAssault @ Aug 18th 2009 9:18PM
The HDD cover is on the front. Engadget has picture of it open.

Dishwasher @ Aug 18th 2009 9:08PM
ill buy one when it has B for backwards comparability. i never owned a PS2 so if i was going to get a PS3 tp play all the new games i would wanna play the old ones first.
sk8monroe81 (PSN--XBL) @ Aug 18th 2009 9:12PM
its not coming back, id get over it and buy a ps3.
that was a limited edition special for early adopters and we are happy for choosing those ps3 consoles, but we paid a premium for them, and were rewarded with a lil something extra...
Chris D.(PSN: Aggie_CEO | XBL:The Aggie CEO | Steam: Aggie_CEO @ Aug 18th 2009 9:16PM
ummmmm here is your ONLY 2 solutions......
1.) Find a used 60GB Model
or
2.) Buy a USED PS2 from a pawnshop(they go for like $40) and a PS3....fact is for the most part the game will look better on the PS2 anyways....
Dishwasher @ Aug 18th 2009 9:18PM
well dumb move on there part. like i said i will not buy one with out back compat. no reason for them not to have atleast software back compat.
'that was a limited edition special for early adopters'
as far as that statement goes that is total bogus. the reason they took it out is $$ plain and simple. it wasnt ever suppose to be limited. why wouldnt they want back compat in every console?!?!
Sly [Planeteer | Power of Teets & Crumpets] @ Aug 18th 2009 9:22PM
like sk8 said, we paid a premium for them. you can buy a PS3 slim and a PS2 slim for less than the price of the MGS4 80GB (which has BC) that i bought.
Dishwasher @ Aug 18th 2009 9:23PM
I shouldnt have to buy a PS2 that is the point.
sk8monroe81 (PSN--XBL) @ Aug 18th 2009 9:30PM
chris has a point. not all ''upscalled'' games look 'upscalled' and actually appear worse than just playing on a ps2/ps1 console, but sometimes the upscalling does a better job too.
washer-
what is bogus about limited edition? is it here is it coming back? NO, so it was limited to early consoles. whether due to price or popularity has nothing to do with something being limited.
of course it was removed to shave costs off production, but i feel it was not the most popular item and was deemed removable by sony.
1 thing you may not know is that EVERY PS3 CONSOLE WILL PLAY MORE (BC) GAMES THAN ANY 360 CONSOLE.
do u know the ps1 game library size ? every 360 only play a handful of (BC) games anyway.
answer to your question: to sell ps2 consoles and offer consumers a lower priced ps3 console. if you want to play ps2 games then buy an $ 80 ps2.
just like if you want wireless on your 360, then you pay $ 80 for an adapter, or $ 30 for an unofficial one.
Chris D.(PSN: Aggie_CEO | XBL:The Aggie CEO | Steam: Aggie_CEO @ Aug 18th 2009 9:31PM
so you wont by a PS3 because it doesnt play PS2 games....funny...
Until Sony did that with the PS2 it hadnt really been done before.......Nintendo & Sega shitted you and didnt give a fuck about it before....point is....sure there are thousands of PS2 games that you may want to play......but the fact is that it could be YEARS before the PS2 emulation is done right for it to be on the PS3 and play a good amount of games. By that time you wont even be able to FIND most of those games....so wait if you want...hell you didnt even have a PS2 so you prolly arent a real big console gamer anyways
No Kill Tayler @ Aug 18th 2009 9:33PM
Software can't be done without the emulation chip.
And you do know sony was losing money still when the PS3 was 600$?
sk8monroe81 (PSN--XBL) @ Aug 18th 2009 9:35PM
dishwasher-
your complaint is because the ps2 has a library of over 500 games right... ?
what if you want to play an xbox game on your 360 ? do you even want to play much of them?
have you ever seen the list on the total # of games the 360 supports for BC now ?
its small. check it out and you probably will forget your BC complaint.
truth is we do not want to play xbox games now, but we all might want to play ps2 games at some point in time and sony knows this and has come up with a way for some of us to buy a ps2 for this reason.
it is fair. its as fair as MS charging for online play and sony not.
Mr Clickerson @ Aug 18th 2009 9:37PM
The whole thing is the fact that it WASN'T limited edition. On the original PS3's they basically had the PS3 hardware AND the PS2 hardware in one console- it was hardware backwards compatibility... Then they axed that because it cost too much, and put in software backwards compatibility in the 40GB and 80GB versions, however, it turned out to be less than satisfactory so they got rid of it completely.
Stop trying to spin it off as some sort of "limited edition" special feature for early adopters. It's something they put in there to try and compete with the Xbox's compatibility and found it wasn't worth the money to support it after they had launched the console.
Chris D.(PSN: Aggie_CEO | XBL:The Aggie CEO | Steam: Aggie_CEO @ Aug 18th 2009 9:38PM
Taylor yes it can....its been done on PCs for the past 5 years at LEAST....Sony can do it on PS3 and my guess is they have been working on it but its not something as easy as some might think....hell it wasnt like it work with ALL games on the PC emulators....
craigw08 @ Aug 18th 2009 9:42PM
you can buy a brand new ps2 for $100/£50 or a used one for much less. look on ebay and u can get one cheap as dirt why would you want software that doesnt work with all games when you can buy the hardware it was designed for for this cheap
sk8monroe81 (PSN--XBL) @ Aug 19th 2009 12:09AM
click-
ok limited edition was not the right word:
definition: ''an issue of something collectible (as books, prints, or medals) that is advertised to be limited to a relatively small number of copies''
wrong wording by me. but it was still a reward for early adoption and nothing more or less.
you lost me when you said ' to compete with xbox compatibility'
the 360 has much compatibility issues itself.
how many xbox games have you wanted to play compared to ps2 games?
has anyone used the xbox BC outside of halo 2?
sony has a much harder time trying to do this with the ps2 library compared to the xbox library of games which stopped main production 3 years ago, while ps2 games still are released all the time.
Wiizer (MW2 Sweatshop Entrepreneur) @ Aug 18th 2009 10:00PM

"Stop trying to spin it off as some sort of "limited edition" special feature for early adopters. It's something they put in there to try and compete with the Xbox's compatibility and found it wasn't worth the money to support it after they had launched the console."
NOW who's trying to spin? Xbox 360 made a big deal about putting in BC because they knew the PS3 would have it. Not the other way around. Sony did drop it because of costs, but either way, considering the slim amount of games that are even BC with the 360, I'd recommend against using that as your gold standard.
PR0F3TA @ Aug 18th 2009 10:34PM
FOR THE LOVE OF JOYSTIQ!!
Let this shit stop. everyone is starting to sound like bickering kids.
the real reason on why they didn't do BC on a PS3 slim is because the PS2 is still around and still very popular. They would lose thousands sales and millions of dollars to put a $99 console on a PS3 that cost $299. Not only that but obviously to keep the cost down for CONSUMERS LIKE YOU to be able to afford it because all you fucking did was complain on how much it cost in the first place.

did you play your ps2 games when the ps2 was available?
where is your ps2?
where was your ps3 with BC if your such a playstation fan and love to play ps2 games?
seriously give it a rest. you point is weak at this point.

I gave it a rest you have commented 4 times since my last comment.. sounds like you need to rest.
and if you read my first comment i said i never owned a PS2 also i never said i was a playstation fan. just said if i was going to get a PS3 to play god of war/metal gear solid. i would want to go back and play the originals first.
wii has back compat xbox has half heartd back compat and as soon as i can get a PS3 at $299 with back compat ill just do without.

AND I DONT MEAN TO GO OFF TOPIC BUT:
(PS3 slim now number 2 in amazon gaming sales, its above the Wii to my surprise.)

Infact stratch that, ill just buy the 120gb as i can get 300gb hard drives for pretty cheap n e ways, and if this one surprisingly has BC im sure ps2 games will be availble on the store at one point....i hope
And if all else fails, also got the ps2 slim in storage :D

CONSOLE GAP WILL CLOSE UP IF MS DOES NOT DROP THE 360 'ELITE' PRICE BELOW $ 299.00 SOON IMO.
new 360 prices to stay effective IMO.
arcade $ 150, pro $ 200, elite $ 250
$299.00 elite is a joke compared to a $299.00 ps3 slim with the same hardware as the current ps3 sku.
sk8monroe81 (PSN--XBL) @ Aug 18th 2009 9:15PM
damn i bet sony is mad about this news coming out without their ''official statement'' attached.
would this announcement make some people waiting on the fence to wait just a bit longer to buy an even better valued ps3 console that may be announced??
talking about a 250gb model coming soon does not help sales of a new 100gb model ps3....
the continued news about new sony consoles may have had an impact on ps3 console sales maybe ? and is it happening with the slim already ? before the slim is released we are told more is coming....
Chris D.(PSN: Aggie_CEO | XBL:The Aggie CEO | Steam: Aggie_CEO @ Aug 18th 2009 9:17PM
I doubt they are mad....I mean hell they kept it under wraps since March....well as far as the FCC goes. Hell thats how we knew of the Models that came out last year damn near 6+ months ahead of time
sk8monroe81 (PSN--XBL) @ Aug 18th 2009 9:22PM
yeah it is free press...
i guess i just mean if YOU didnt have a ps3 and wanted to buy 1 soon, would you be more apt to buy 1 soon if you only know about the 100gb model and whats available.
or if you knew about a new model coming out, would YOU maybe be more apt to wait and see what happens. ?
and by YOU I mean the average consumer and not early adopters like us.
i feel a lot of prospective ps3 customers have already waited for the slim announcement itself and now this could make some wait, buy maybe not...
Chris D.(PSN: Aggie_CEO | XBL:The Aggie CEO | Steam: Aggie_CEO @ Aug 18th 2009 9:26PM
if I wanted the new slim I'd buy the 120GB and upgrade it to 500GB for less than the difference of the 250GB model
Fu22y_Pumper @ Aug 18th 2009 10:25PM
my bet is that this means the fats r for sure going away sell off the fats over the holiday season then early next year release the 250 slim as the new premium for 50-100 more. so that would mean waiting till january at least. i'd rather just get the 120 now n upgrade the hdd for cheap if u want more space than wait till next year.
