Gran Turismo 5 will (finally) crush, flip those lovely cars

There have been some big PlayStation-related announcements today: the PS3 Slim, a PS3 price drop and now the Gran Turismo series is really, seriously, finally incorporating visible car damage. On the official Gran Turismo 5 site, the latest spec sheet for the game touts that its physics model "completely renders deformation from crash." Not scratches, not scuffs, but deformation. (Backing up what we saw in the E3 trailer for the game.)
The site also reveals that, in what seems to be an attempt to make up for the absence of spectacular crashes, cars will flip and even land upside-down in reaction to collisions. Of course, all of this will be for naught if a simple bump -- the kind that, in GT5 Prologue, pushes cars aside like they're made of balsa wood -- instantly totals other autos and sends them flying to the moon. We don't think we can wait until GT7 for that to be fixed.

HELL YES!! THIS IS THE DAY OF THE PS3!
Shadowbender ( Sweatshop Supporter In Hiding) @ Aug 18th 2009 7:34PM
Indeed, my friend, indeed.
Heck, August 18 should officially be called "PlayStation Day". I'll talk to Obama. ;).
Longhorn (August 18: D-Day) @ Aug 18th 2009 7:41PM
I had it on my name all this time
Sly [Planeteer | Power of Teets & Crumpets] @ Aug 18th 2009 7:51PM
wow, you did. all this time, i was trying to figure out what was so important about august 18. the major news for me today was the price drop though. it'll be interesting to see what nintendo has to say about this, since the PS3 is now only $50 more.
Kdiggy @ Aug 18th 2009 8:15PM
Best. Games. Con. EVER!!
Cheesus(Crust) @ Aug 18th 2009 9:16PM
Oh shut up. Almost all your comments seem to say that so I have NO reason what so ever to listen to your bullshit
Shadowbender ( Sweatshop Supporter In Hiding) @ Aug 18th 2009 7:32PM
Crushing and flipping? DIG THIS. (No sarcasm there, seriously.)
craigw08 @ Aug 18th 2009 9:51PM
all of you stfu
tmacairjordan87 @ Aug 18th 2009 7:35PM
Someone check that Forza developer's pulse, I think he just choked on his words
epsilon343 @ Aug 18th 2009 8:15PM
Why...because GT finally decided to move into the 21st century?
tmacairjordan87 @ Aug 18th 2009 8:17PM
Well then by that logic, so did Forza since they made a big whoop about flipping cars at E3.
"LOOK AT THAT SHIT FLIP YO, DIS BE THA DEFINITIVE RACER!!!!"
Kdiggy @ Aug 18th 2009 8:18PM
-There will be 1,000 vehicles in the game
-60 courses
-full physics-based realtime deformation damage on all cars
-Also incorporating interior damage (take that Forza3)
-A completely new physics system (with possible rollovers)
-an online replay album
-YouTube support for uploading replays (Forza are you still there)
-custom soundtracks
-The return of Gran Turismo TV.
-The PlayStation Eye can be used as a full 3D head tracking system, which would mean that not only does it track movement left and right, but forward and back as well, resulting in the ability to move your in-car view left, right, forward and back.
-Real time Weather Changing
-Nascar
-W2R
-Super Cars
-GT PSP compabilities
Killjebus...PSN Killjebus @ Aug 18th 2009 8:24PM
There is tacked on canned damage animations and then there is perfection.
GT is has and always will be perfection.
Forza? Just the redheaded stepchild that has to sleep on the kitchen floor of Gods (Yamauchi's) house just to try and see what the master is up to.
I have seen the damage modeling of Forza and for me it is so bad I would rather not have it at all.
Kazunori has said many times that he would not do damage until it could be done right. That time has come, not only damage on the outside but damage/deformation on the INSIDE.
Like I said, Forza MS and Turn 10....bend over and take it bitches.
epsilon343 @ Aug 18th 2009 8:29PM
This is so laughable. None of you have even seen the damage modeling outside of a bullet point in a product list lifted from a Japanese site. Most reputable racing games have included this feature for years and all of the PS3 fanboys flip out and act like it's the second coming because it's finally in GT5?
I get that all of you are high on some good PS3 news finally coming out after 4 years of missteps but really...tone it down a little, lol.
tmacairjordan87 @ Aug 18th 2009 8:35PM
I really do love some bitter fanboy tears for dinner.
GT "catching" up is ridiculous, as the last real one was on ps2. There's been 3 Forza games between the last full GT game and 5. Quality > quantity. This totally reminds me of all the people saying how much better Saints Row was than San Andreas. Well no shit, you're comparing a 360 game to a ps2 game.
Killjebus...PSN Killjebus @ Aug 18th 2009 8:39PM
epsilon....
here you go, notice how the paint is chipped realistically along with the realistic and not canned damage?

nice pic from the trailer
but notice how the trailer is listed as a" Gran Turismo 5 Concept Movie" on the gran turismo website..
yeah, this isn't in-game
so until we have a REAL gameplay video, we have no idea how it looks like
Killjebus...PSN Killjebus @ Aug 18th 2009 9:14PM
puffy
it is from the E3 trailer which is ALL gameplay or replay.

I know it seems too good to be true...but it is. God is a perfectionist, and it looks like he has hit perfection.
Jason @ Aug 18th 2009 11:09PM
It's easy to add features when you haven't even started working on anything beyond the demo.

Paul @ Aug 18th 2009 8:00PM
that's a ll well and good, but there is one major thing missing from that spec sheet..... A RELEASE DATE!
will this be compared with Forza 3 or Forza 4?
Killjebus...PSN Killjebus @ Aug 18th 2009 8:04PM
A release date of this year in December will be revealed at TGS.
This game will come out this year, in December....possibly as a pack-in with the PS3Slim.
I "Michael Patcher" it.
tmacairjordan87 @ Aug 18th 2009 8:04PM
Well at the rate that MS is pumping out Forza games...probably 4 then.
I mean, there's been 3 Forza games in between GT 4 and GT 5.
Chris D.(PSN: Aggie_CEO | XBL:The Aggie CEO | Steam: Aggie_CEO @ Aug 18th 2009 8:35PM
I think they should Bundle it with the 250GB Slim thats coming out after TGS

Paul just hit that one home. Bitter words have never been so true.
Indefinite Implosion @ Aug 19th 2009 5:08AM
I just realised... this head tracking bit is AWESOME and all... when you look left and the camera tracks it and shows the view looking out the side window it won't work, because you won't be looking at the screen!
KiraXD @ Aug 19th 2009 7:56PM
@ indefinite implosion... iono i think its mainly for use with sitting 3 feet in front of a 40"+ screen and having it just track your head movements looking across the track in front of you... either that or it would make you look left and right while keeping your eyes on the screen (since its not eye tracking)
sony boy @ Aug 18th 2009 7:39PM

Cry havoc....and let slip the dogs of War.

Akuma FTW @ Aug 18th 2009 8:16PM
No release date = Fail
realistic car damage and the fanboys are salivating? By the time Forza 5 comes out maybe this game will be competition, but then again I wont care by then.
(for the record I am a proud owner of all 3 systems as of last week, and the PS3 has been underwhelming to say the least)
Ashitaka @ Aug 18th 2009 9:56PM
Hummmm, TittieSprinkles... Exactly on which side are you?
Killjebus...PSN Killjebus @ Aug 18th 2009 7:40PM

Always have to throw in some "whitty" comment eh Joystiq? It must be a rule in the American media to plant a negative spin on nearly every single PS3 story.
Pathetic
Did anyone catch that not only will it have REAL damage modeling but the interiors of the cars will REALISTICALLY deform as well.
HAAS599 @ Aug 18th 2009 7:47PM
+1
P.S. Joystiq, please get your site website working right before you start bashing AAA sim racing game
Sly [Planeteer | Power of Teets & Crumpets] @ Aug 18th 2009 7:52PM
it's a JOKE. ya know, those little comments that make you laugh? if you got offended by that, you need to lighten up A LOT.
Killjebus...PSN Killjebus @ Aug 18th 2009 8:01PM
Look I am all for jokes....but it gets a little redundant when I see a "whitty" comment on the negative side of things in nearly EVERY SINGLE PS3 RELATED ARTICLE.
There is such a thing as using up a joke, once you do that....it ceases to be funny and becomes irritating and most of all stupid.
Things are on the up and up for Sony (just like I said it would) and the American media is so used to bashing the PS3 that they cannot help themselves...either that or they cannot stand that Sony is starting to make alot of noise this generation.
Sly [Planeteer | Power of Teets & Crumpets] @ Aug 18th 2009 8:37PM
to be fair, they've bashed the 360 and wii quite a bit too. it's all light-hearted.
Crayfish @ Aug 19th 2009 1:08AM
As cool as interior damage Sounds.. has anyone actually played a racing game with exterior damage and said to themselves "if only this had interior damage!!"?
I'm all for pushing technology, and hell, interior damage probably will even become a standard expectation, but as a bullet-point on a list it certainly doesn't seem like something to mark out about.
John @ Aug 19th 2009 11:56AM
It's Witty, not whitty, you sound like a damn fool when you say it that way - biff tannen
Anpanman @ Aug 18th 2009 7:40PM
Guys...
I don't know what to think about this info :\ (the original source, not this report)
It lists some features and people are taking that as the "whole GT5" game, yet at the left side, the first screenshot has some text under it saying something about "GamesCom Special version of GT5 - main screen".
It's all really confusing, so better to wait the English version of news page to get updated or wait reports detaling the GT game on the show floor at GC
