If you've been cracking your knuckles in anticipation of running StarCraft or penguin-infested operating systems on your new PS3 Slim, there's some news than needs to be brought to your attention. According to the official PS3 Slim press release, "users will not be able to install other Operating Systems to the new PS3 system."
Also, stop cracking your knuckles like that. It's creeping us out.

Considering that you cannot run PlayStation software and a third-party OS at the same time, do you mind clarifying exactly what the hell you are talking about?

Except that isn't possible with two OSs, since you can't run both, what was that about "idiotic" there buddy?

This pisses me off as I have my PS3 dual booting with Linux and its cool. That been said I barely ever use it just occasionally for Snes9x and to mess around. Nothing like Sony taking a step backward though, first losing PS2 BC, then this. That been said it still looks like the 120GB Slim is a hell of a buy for $299.

It's a Slim thing. It's not a firmware downgrade.

and it pisses me off that people wont shut the fuck up about PS2 BC,
its almost as if Sony can't do anything right this gen. they lower the price and slim the look but no, thats not enough for some of you is it. It wont be a "must buy" untill it tucks u into bed and gives you head

I don't know all these ins-and outs, but I can imagine it being very useful for all these institutions like in the medical field or universities that have been using clusters of PS3s so far to do some intense calculations. For them it has been a very cost efficient option to purchase a lot of PS3's and cluster them together to have a cheap alternative instead of buying a real expensive super computer. I'm sure being able to boot the PS3 in Linux will allow them to fully configure them the way they need them to work together. Killing this feature might not affect sales of regular consumers, but might affect these kinds of organizations to consider buying PS3s in the future

I think it was a wise decision. It was kind of useless anyway.

Actually, Sony wanted to encourage development for the platform. This probably won't affect many people and considering the PS3 runs Linux in a hypervisor, it really wasn't terribly useful. That 256MB RAM was pretty dreadful too.

Hey,
This was a major selling point for me to rush out and buy the ps3 on day1 (I mean it seriously)
The truth of it is that Sony basterdised it, not being able to access the rsx crippled the Linux support and one of the main things I wanted was for the rsx to be opened to Linux shame they didnt do that, I guess they never will. Im glad I have the original PS3 still though.
Also Nova MK X your an Idiot, first class. How does running Linux make you into a cheating bastard ? Your a first class idiot mate well done congratulations you win the dumb ass of the year award I dont have a crown to offer you but next time you take a dump in your toilet that floating turd is your trophy, fish it out and wear it with pride.

Why can't you just watch the movie through the PS3 OS?

I wasn't great for watching movies as the video accelerator and other key stuff is locked out under Linux. So it comes off as a very slow for video purposes.

It was a shitty PC with 256 MB of ram and software based video. So yeah, i dunno what low res movies you were watching on there that you couldnt watch from the XMB.

CTC: It's because the PS3's on-board media capabilities are limited. Either through licensing or lack of demand for a specific format. For instance; mkv. It's becoming an increasingly popular format, but no big commercially available hardware/software supports it. Meanwhile, there are players on Linux which do support it. So I do see why people would do this. But it's definitely a niche.

ummmmm yea.....so when the PS3 NATIVELY supports .mkv and .ogm file then you can say "what files cants the PS3 play that linux can"

lol... For some reason I felt it necessary to read IGN and see if they had a Shadow Complex review up last night. I saw your name in the comments there too spreading your "Jump In" mumbo jumbo. You astonish me.
Wii would like to play b3yond, so jump in. It's good to play together, but if you continue to live in your world instead of playing in ours... What a rush you'll be missing out on!

Chris D.: That's a standard radio cord plug, just like on the original Xbox, PS1 or full-size PS2. It is 110V AC input. The power supply is internal.
You may be getting confused because it is the same plug as on the most recent PS2 slim. This is because on the most recent PS2 slim the power supply is internal, it was only external on the earlier PS2 slims.

@Chris D: On that picture, it says AC in, so it's an internal power brick. If it was external, it would say DC in, which is what the power brick outputs.

@ D0RC
Do you own a PS3? Do you like the new Slim with the $299 price tag? I ask this because I imagine you are one of the many who has been complaining about price since it was launched. And if you remember we HAD backwards compatibility back then. It was an exceptional full hardware accelerated BC, btw. If you have been clamoring for a price cut then you got what you wanted. Just don't complain about the cuts that had to be made to get to your preferred price.
If you want to play PS2 games get a PS2.
