Sony announces new PS3 Slim, coming first week of Sept. [update: now with pics!]

We know, we're as shocked as you are! Sony has used the GamesCom stage in Cologne to announce the oh-so-tiny PS3 Slim. The good news is that the system sports both a slimmer form factor (33 percent smaller, 36 percent lighter and 34 percent less power use) a 120GB hard drive and the tidy price tag of $299 (or €299, £249, and ¥29,980). It boasts all the same features as the current PS3, which means still no backwards compatibility with your PS2 games.
If you've been holding off on buying a chunkier PS3 until the inevitable release of its slimmer little brother, your wait will finally end in September.

I like the shiny one too, but damn does it show dust fast. The matte finish will probably be well received by those who don't clean a lot or have kids to scratch the device up.

I like the new design and the matte finish, but there is a thing I don't like at all: the Powen an Eject buttons...
They look out of place... they should have made the buttons touch sensitive like the grill model.

It looks rather square shaped...the buttons are pretty ugly too, they should have done them as touch sensitive or as the same color. I'll be buying a PS3 now though, the question is do I get the 80gb used from someone or hold out for this and get a 120gb.

So the ps3 slim does not include a PS3 Bluetooth? or any sort of cheap heasets? man....they need to put cheap headsets or something in there so more people can use because the ps comunity has about 50% of it's population talking with headset while 360 has like 90% because each system includes it lol.

I don't take issue with the matte look, a lot of people bitched about the shiny look, it's a no win situation regardless.
However, I do take issue with what looks like a freshman (high school or college) design. It's awful and plain stupid.
It's weighted wrong and they probably would have done much better squaring it more. Then again, you'd have a PS2 slim look. Still, it has looks only its fat momma will love.
Ironically and sadly it will be my first PS3 regardless.

Makes me glad I got my PS3 for $299 at Walmart back when MGS4 came out.
It doesnt look ugly but it doesnt look like a piece of high end electronics anymore, mainly because of the toy quality plastic like the PS2 was made of. I would definitely get it over the old one to save 100 bucks but at the same price I'd rather have the old one.

The HDD drive is at the front. There are two screws at the bottom that you need to remove before you can remove the front face plate. After that, you just swap the drive and that's it. Problem is, transferring the files from one drive to another is still a headache.

the damn things is jus gonna burn up like the little ps2's did and aint none of them gonna be worth having. because when u make them small they cant get air and they get hot and burn up. not everyone wants small they want them to last a long time to look at the damn atries 20 somethin years old and most of them work like new.

Maybe the folks that don't want or like having 15 different boxes sitting under their TV in order to play their games? The Wii lets me wrap up Nintendo's last 20 years worth of gaming in one tiny, unobtrusive box. The PS3 could do the same thing, did do the same thing at one point.
