Sony announces new PS3 Slim, coming first week of Sept. [update: now with pics!]
389
We know, we're as shocked as you are! Sony has used the GamesCom stage in Cologne to announce the oh-so-tiny PS3 Slim. The good news is that the system sports both a slimmer form factor (33 percent smaller, 36 percent lighter and 34 percent less power use) a 120GB hard drive and the tidy price tag of $299 (or €299, £249, and ¥29,980). It boasts all the same features as the current PS3, which means still no backwards compatibility with your PS2 games.
If you've been holding off on buying a chunkier PS3 until the inevitable release of its slimmer little brother, your wait will finally end in September.

A few years late but nonetheless.
I like the new look, trying to decide to get one. I have an 80g now.

Yeah, it's a lot less shiny. Guess I'd better pick up a current one while I still can. I like shiny objects

DeepFried: Guess what, friend, Sears and Kmart already have preorder slots available for the PS3 Slim, so you can sorta buy one today.

Especially considering that they just started making good games for it. Looks like I'll be playing Uncharted 2 after all.

Awesome either way :D Who cares if it doesn't have backwards compatibility? Anyone who doesn't already have a PS2 must have been living under a rock for the last decade.

Maybe the folks that don't want or like having 15 different boxes sitting under their TV in order to play their games? The Wii lets me wrap up Nintendo's last 20 years worth of gaming in one tiny, unobtrusive box. The PS3 could do the same thing, did do the same thing at one point.

@gtarob: The Wii hardly wraps up Nintendo's last 20 years. All it really includes is full Gamecube support. You still can't plug a NES, SNES, or N64 cartridge in there, and virtual console doesn't come anywhere close to having the full game libraries from those systems.

@AirIntake - True, perhaps I stated that poorly. Every generation of Nintendo's consoles are supported in one box. Not all the games are present, but every console is represented there in one machine from the NES to the Gamecube.
I have a whole host of past games that I still like to play from the PS1 and PS2. I don't want the clutter of 15 different systems sitting on a shelf in order to do so however. The PS3 doesn't need the actual PS2 hardware in order to play the last generation of games. Sony could be offering PS2 BC emulation and still aren't.

Exactly. Chances are people already have a PS2, and a slim one at that. I don't care about the new PS3 Slim's lack of BC, especially considering all you're getting for $300!?!?! A 120GB HDD, Blu-ray player, and great games??? That's insane!
Even if the PS3 Slim did have BC, eventually, a future PS would have to drop at least some of its BC with older games. It'd be way too expensive to keep putting Emotion Engines in the darn things. That's what contributed to the original PS3s being so high-priced as well.
The price drop is finally here, it's a great system, and complaints of BC are a little too late now. Besides, I don't hear 360 people griping about their system's semi-BC.

Backwards compatability is the most overhyped and overrated features/omissions on consoles. I buy new consoles to play NEW games. The only time I ever used back compatability was during a console's initial launch period when it only had like 5 games out for it. PS3 is well beyond that, there are plenty of new games to buy, and the PS2 is on sale for $100 now.
Plus, try popping in an old PS2 game and they look like garbage compared to new games.

Seeing as my PS2 is about the die on me, I'd like backwards compatibility. There is no way I'm going to give up on MGS or Final Fantasy Chronicles.

I want BC so I can upscale it and make the PS2 graphics at least a little more bearable on an HDTV.

Think outside the box, dude! Backwards compatible ps3=virtually unlimited memory card storage for ps2 games and oh, you can play ps2 games with the wireless ps3 controllers and play ps2 games with WIRELESS internet on the Ps3! Thanks, but i love the backwards compatible ps3!

Ugh...dammit.
This kills the PS2 regarding cost issue. Kill the fucking system and add BC support!

You think I care? I have a BC unit.
I'm pointing out the fact that Sony is artificially keeping their PS2 alive to milk the masses and further the PS3 consumer base.
But, let's not think of that. Let's just give money away blindly. We're "HARDCORE".

there not doing it to milk the masses atm the ps2 is the only console that still competes with the wii on a power lvl and i believe BC would be something that would increase market penetration but the sad fact is to put BC back in it would most likely cost as much or more than the ps3 does now and it wouldnt be quite so slim

Between this and the free GT psp go deal, I'd say Sony's getting pretty serious (or desperate depending on how you look at it) now.

Desperate because they're losing ungodly amounts of money, and they've only sold 23 million ps3's in 3 years compared to what...50-60 million ps2s in the same time frame?

I agree, I like the look of the PS3phat much more.
Still I would imagine the biggest reasons for the Slim is cost and that Japan does not like the size of the current PS3.

Yeah it looks pretty bad compared to the phat model,I prefer the PSP and PS3 original models.Especially becaus emy PSP 2000 was complete trash compared to the original.
Although I see myself buying a PSP go as soon as Sony gives more support to this territory...or a new pursuit force is released.
