Sony announces new PS3 Slim, coming first week of Sept. [update: now with pics!]

I've got an 80GB, and it's full. 60+ PSN games and a dozen demos will do that. Time to bring this one up to the 500GB mark.

A major pisser, isn't it? It will be good to get the slim as a replacement.

might still be too much to make a dent, considering the elite was MS worst selling 360 model probably because of price....

Of course, we all saw this coming, but this is still fantastic news. I'll probably buy one soon, this is a great price. I like the design too. I mean, sure, I think the original design is slightly better, but this still looks great.

Wow, we've got some sore people-living-under-rocks here. Get a new slim ps2 for $100. It's a hundred bucks you would have spent on the ps3 before the price drop anyway. Or emulate on pc. Or buy a used one on ebay or amazon for much less. Or whine, but that won't get you as far as the above options.

I have the 60 GB and it has a SD card, CF, Memory Stick, and something else reader. After that, I thought they removed some but not all of those slots. Hmm...now I am wondering what's underneath that plastic flap??? Never checked bc the 60GB is the only one for me. =)

I think I'll wait til the 2nd gen of these PS3 Slim's hits the market.......

Given the amount of heat generated by my original PS3.....it'll be interesting to see how hot the PS3 Slim gets.......

Looks like I'll still have to hunt down a 60gb from launch if I ever plan on buying a PS3...

The HDD drive is at the front. There are two screws at the bottom that you need to remove before you can remove the front face plate. After that, you just swap the drive and that's it. Problem is, transferring the files from one drive to another is still a headache.

Looks like I'm still out since I'm sick of RMAing my PS3. PS3 haet Disgaea 3.

It's good business sense on a couple of fronts.

I do like the design and 'professional look' of the big model tho. This new one looks a little too "toy-like".. like the PS2 Slim. Also the PS3 was a nice scalable architecture if you were into programming in Linux. It's too bad that capability has been removed, although I suspect that there is a concern that eventually the system can be hacked that way - those hackers are evil geniuses. The PSP was hacked easily without modchips.. and the PS2 can play dvd backups using only a program on a memory card and the PS2's native DVD function. :-o

Sony probably knows something we don't. Still... too bad to loose a feature.

Do we actually have anything concrete on the HDD replacement? It's just speculative that maybe that "logo" panel can be removed, but I wouldn't count my chickens before Sony told us that they were actually going to hatch.

I was planning on getting another PS3 for the basement entertainment area.. but geez.. I think I'm gonna get a fat one before they're all gone.. I'd like to have held off for awhile yet, but I am not a fan of the Slim. I'd also question it's reliability until it's been field tested in the wild for about 6 months. The PS2 slim had some overheating issues when it was first brought out as I recall. At least I know the fatty's a reliable box off the shelf.

good to see that no features have been removed. and looks like sony found the tech to shrink the ps3.

it doesnt appeal to me as much as the shiny fat one does because well it looks to soft and cuddly now, it doesn't look bad-ass at all. while it still looks nice sony should of kept it more to the original design like they did with the ps2 slim.

actualy looking at the front view as i am now it looks like an old video player that's casing has faded or a gray nintendo 64 or something like that, it just looks old and made of cheap plastic and i dont like the new logo.

So, the hype and the "Year of the PS3" talk did not start UNTIL the release of the PS3? NO, it started when the PS3 was announced. when was that? Wait for it...

E3 2005. The hype engine kicked in right then.

But no one talked about the PS3 until it was released in November 2006, right?

It's just too bad I hate PS2 slims with a passion or else the idea would work.

I have one question for anyone who can answer it:

Can I exchange my 80GB hard drive for the 120GB hard drive of the PS3 Slim at futureshop? I mean, since now the slim is the SAME price as the 80gb ps3, it should make sense that they refund the price difference and exchange your HDD, right?

the damn things is jus gonna burn up like the little ps2's did and aint none of them gonna be worth having. because when u make them small they cant get air and they get hot and burn up. not everyone wants small they want them to last a long time to look at the damn atries 20 somethin years old and most of them work like new.

im going to buy a ps3 slim because it uses less power but im wondering how do i transfer my memery from my 80g to the ps3 slim
